Passé Composé
• Formation:
– How many verbs are needed? 1 or 2
– What are the two verbs to choose from?• AVOIR et ÊTRE
Regular Verb Endings
• -ER -é
• -IR - i
• -RE - u
VANDERTRAMPs (AVOIR ou ÊTRE)
ATTENTION!
• When conjugating with ÊTRE, it is important to make the past participle agree in GENDER and NUMBER!
• Ex. ArriverJe suis arrivé(e) Nous sommes arrivé(e)s Tu es arrivé(e) Vous êtes arrivé(e)(s)Il/elle est arrivé Ils/elles sont arrivé(e)s
Reflexive Verbs (Avoir ou Être?)
• Any verb that has a « se » in front of it.
• EX. Se laverJe me suis lavé(e) nous nous sommes lavé(e)sTu t’es lavé(e) vous vous êtes lavé(e)(s) Il/elle s’est lavé(e) ils/elles se sont lavé(e)s
When to use the PC• Passe Compose expresses specific actions or
events that were started and completed at a definite point in the past– Ex. J’ai chanté hier soir à 20h30.
• P.C. expresses a specific action or event at a specific point in past time or an event repeated a specific number of times
– Ex. J’ai joué au tennis trois fois la semaine dernière.
Passé Composé is a BOOM!
Imparfait
• How many verbs? 1 or 2?
• Endings GO TO THE NOUS FORM AND TAKE OFF THE -ONSADD– ais -ions – ais -iez– ait -aient

• AVOIR– av-
• ÊTRE– ét- ADD NORMAL ENDINGS!
• FAIRE– fas-
When to use Imparfait instead of PC?
• Imparfait describes ongoing or continuous actions or events in the past
• EX: J’allais chez ma grand-mère le dimanche depuis que j’avais deux ans
• Imparfait describes habitual or repeated actions or events in the past
• Ex. Chaque Thanksgiving, je mangeais en famille chez ma grandmere.
More Imparfait!• The imperfect tense also describes people, things, or a
state of mind in the past, as well as weather or background information in a story (what was happening)– Verbs avoir, etre, aimer, croire, penser, desirer, esperer, pouvoir,
preferer, regretter, savoir, vouloir)
• EX: Nous étions heureux d’apprendre l’imparfait! • Il faisait chaud. • C’était barbant, la leçon de M. Stevens sur l’imparfait!
• Il parlait français.• Il était malade.
Comparison to English
• Typically, passé composé translates as “did,” “_________-ed”– Nous avons dansé We danced.
• Imparfait typically translates as “was__________ing” or “used to…”
Je jouais au tennis. I used to play tennis.
