Goazen Creator - Pascale Lascano

Pascale Lascano began dancing as a child in her home town of Getaria’s (Lapurdi) local dance group by the same name. Later as a young adult and with dwindling participation in her local dance group, Pascal joined the “Oinak Arin” group of nearby Beskoitze (Lapurdi) and was mentored by Claude Iruretagoyena, who was a professor and choreographer of dance. Pascale also developed a heightened appreciation of well made costumes with ancestral details. After three years, Pascale took over her childhood group in Getaria. In order to bring a second wind to traditional Basque dance, which was loosing popularity to contemporary dance, Pascale started to choreograph dances while incorporating foreign music and also revived forgotten classic Basque dance repertoires. Pascale has also been involved in associations promoting Catalan and African dance. In 2008 Pascale was approached by Benoit Lamerain, a txistulari from Getaria, to direct and choreograph a dance show entitled “Urraska,” which debuted in January of 2009 in the theatre of Baiona. The show “Goazen” was next and was developed in eight intense months and debuted in the spring of 2010. Pascale also created “Taupadak” with the adult “Zirikolatz” group of Senpere (Lapurdi), whose theme deals with the elements of earth, fire, air and water. Later this year Pascal will begin working on her next project, entitled “Ainarak,” whose theme is based on the women migrant workers of Navarre and Aragon, who worked in the sandal factories of Maule (Xiberoa). Pascale is the daughter and granddaughter of fishermen of Getaria, and currently resides with her family in Senpere and works as a nurse’s aide .

“Goazen” / “Let’s Go”

Good evening/afternoon everyone!

The association of “Zarena Zarelako” is pleased to be here at the Basque Cultural Center to bring you our latest dance show “Goazen” for its 20th and 21st show here in South San Francisco. For us this is a dream come true and these will be the last two shows of “Goazen,” that we will bring to life for you.

You will not see a traditional Basque dance show, but instead a creation that exhib-its the similar steps, rhythms, choreographies and costumes of our traditional Basque repertoire with that of the several countries in the world:

− Corsica with its similar identity, our attachment to the land and language.

− Turkey with its chain dances.

− Ossetia with its rhythms “arin arin.”

− India with its baton dances.

− Ecuador with its mast dances (zinta dantza).

− United States with its historic ties to the Basque Country and emigration that you have witnessed along with your assimilation to the land of California and by the dances we have imagined that combine these two cultures.

The sound track has been especially selected to transport you to these different countries.

Goazen is a popular entertainment show performed by a benevolent group of ten dancers and a special character you will encounter during the show.

For one hour, the dancers will not leave the stage and will actually make their cos-tume changes on stage, a spectacle usually only reserved for back stage.

We wish you well as you travel with us...The time to depart has come...the suitcases are packed...Let’s Go! Goazen!

Goazen poster on program cover was designed by Jon Biscay.
