Most Important Business Tool

Remember, you are investing in your most important business tool. Deal only with reputable companies with proven track records. Ask for many references,

not just the few they give you. Also, ask for ones with several years of service history with that company.

Inquire about the experience level of the representative who will be consulting you. How long has he been employed with the company? Visit your prospective

vendors' facilities. Meet the people who will be implementing your system. Ask about their technical staff's abilities. Are their technicians certified by the

manufacturer of the equipment you are considering? What are their quoted response times if you need service? Do they have adequate inventory locally in

case of a major system failure? How in-depth is the training they will provide for you? This is the company that you will be entrusting with your communications

needs for the next several years. Check it out thoroughly.

Finally, determine what the system will cost. Look at your costs for five-years. What will the maintenance costs be? Factor in reliability -- if your system

continually goes down, what will that cost in lost revenues and goodwill? As your company grows, what will the upgrade costs be? Some manufacturers of

telephone equipment sell direct to the end-user, often the only source for service and equipment. Others sell their products through authorized distributors,

which generally offer several choices. Make sure your bidding vendors provide you with a post-installation price sheet for equipment you may add later.

Factor in how well each system manages your network cabling, infrastructure cabling costs, such as hone lines and long distance charges. It may be

that a more expensive system can save you money on your network costs and thus cost less during a five-year period. Do not just look at the upfront cost. The

cheapest price may cost you and your company the most over the long run.

Communications cabling falls into three broad categories and two type:

Categories data and voice and video.

The telephone network is the oldest cabled networking system currently in existence, but it was preceded by the telegraph network, which was the first cabled

communication system. Cable TV also qualifies as a cabled communication network. Digital communications mean that voice and video are increasingly

adopting data transmission techniques, converting their analog passengers into digital data. Eventually all cabled networks will be data networks.

Telephone Network

The cable bringing landlines to homes and businesses has only two wires. One of these wires carries a positive charge and the other carries a negative

charge. This is smallest form of Unshielded Twisted Pair Cable available, because a pair has to have two wires. UTP protects signals from magnetic

interference by twisting the two wires together. A charge passing along a wire creates a magnetic field. Environmental magnetic interference merges with

that field. Twisting the positive and negative sires together, merges their magnetic fields, and the opposite polarity of the two magnetic fields cancels each

other out together with the environmental magnetic interference absorbed by the two fields. Cable containing four wires carries two lines to a phone and a six

wire cable carries three telephone lines.

Television Networks

Coaxial cable is well shielded and has a solid metal core. Television networks are unidirectional, and so the absence of a number of wires inside the cable is

not a problem.

Data Networks

Current data networks run over Unshielded Twisted Pair, Shielded Twisted Pair, Twin-axial cable, and optical fiber cable. Unshielded Twisted Pair, Twin-

axial cable, single-mode and multi-mode fiber are recommended for Ethernet networks. Shielded Twisted Pair is the common form of cable used for token

ring networks. Ethernet is a more widely implemented form of local area network, and the most widely used form of cable for Ethernet networks is Unshielded

Twisted Pair, because it is the cheapest of the recommended cable types for Ethernet. Telephone services and video streaming are increasingly being sent

over data networks.

Cable Types -Plenum and Non-plenum

The telephone network relies on Unshielded Twisted Pair cable, and this is also the predominant cable type in data networks today. Originally, data networks

ran over coaxial cable, which is still the standard cable type for video transmissions. Coaxial cable has one solid metal core. This is surrounded by packing,

which dampens incoming environmental interference, and the packing is surrounded by metal foil to block magnetic interference. The entire structure is

encased in a plastic jacket. Coaxial cable is less flexible, physicallyand in terms of usage, than Unshielded Twisted Pair Cable. UTP is also cheaper, which

means it is more widely implemented for data networks. Digitized video transmissions can be carried over UTP.

The plenum is hidden space within a building which is used for HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) and to run cables. Plenum space is

normally above a suspended ceiling or under a raised floor. Buildings without plenum spaces will have cabling and HVAC ducts within plain view. The plenum

space is normally used to accommodate the communication wires for the building's computer and telephone network. Recent studies have shown that wiring

and cabling within the plenum space could be dangerous and be exposed to fire/burning possibilities.

1. Plenum cable is wire that is carpeted in the plenum spaces of a building. The materials used in the creation of plenum cable are regulated under

the National Fire Protection Association standard NFPA 90A: Standard for the Installation of Air Conditioning and Ventilating Systems in the

United States.

2. Plenum cable is covered with a fire proof plastic layer of either a low-smoke polyvinyl chloride (PVC) {patented 1987} or a fluorinated ethylene

polymer (FEP).

3. All substances anticipated for use in cables manufacturing (to be carpeted in plenum spaces) are planned to meet careful fire safety test

standards in agreement with NFPA 262 and outlined in NFPA 90A. Plenum cable must meet two requirements to meet most fire codes:

4. Plenum cable must not burn easily

5. Plenum cable must not emit toxic fumes when exposed to extreme heat

6. Because of these requirements, plenum cable is usually more expensive than non-plenum cable. Plenum cable is also more stiff and difficult to

work with than regular network cable.

7. Riser cables are those cables which are carpeted under the floor or non-plenum places. The fire requirements for riser cables are not so high and

strict. Riser cables can possibly be replaced by plenum cables but plenum cables can never be replaced by riser cable

A few words on Plenum

"Plenum" is also a fire code rating. It is sometimes identified by the designation "CMP" meaning a communications plenum rated cable.

Plenum cable has a jacket made of Teflon rather than PVC (which you will find on CM or CMR rated cable) and is used in spaces designated

for air-handling, such as drop ceilings that conceal return air vents in office buildings. The Teflon gives off much less poisonous gas than

PVC when it burns. Thus by using plenum cable in air-handling spaces one prevents poisonous gas from being created and spread

throughout the building through the air ducts during a fire.

Many commercial installations require the use of plenum cable. To make certain you are installing cable that is up to code, you have to check

with your local fire marshal or building inspector. The laws vary from state to state and town to town.

Wireless Site Survey Best Practices

As wireless technology continues to mature, new wireless applications and appliances continue to emerge. There is increasing demand for transmitting voice

Page 4: Pasadena, Network Cabling, Phone System, WIFI, Fiber Optic, Low Cost, High Quality, 877-448-4968

11/3/11 https://sites.google.com/a/innovaglobal.com/how-to-phone-system/masters…

4/5sites.google.com/a/innovaglobal.com/how-to-phone-system/…/master-5?t…

and video, as well as the need for accurate positioning of users and assets accessing the WLAN. Site surveys are invaluable for designing and optimizing

WLAN networks to support these applications. This paper provides insight into best practices for executing wireless site surveys

WLAN networks

Wireless local area networks (WLANs) using 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11a technology (Wi-Fi) have been springing up practically everywhere, providing

high-speed wireless data communications to millions of people around the world. Adoption of wireless technology

is fueled by its low cost and by consumers’ desire for the convenience of being connected to the internet while on the go. The question is no longer: “Why

wireless?” It has become: “Why not wireless?” So, considering the maturity of WLAN technology, planning and deploying a wireless LAN network in the

office must be easy, right? Guess again!

Using the right tools for the job

End users only see the results of the hard work of the WLAN operators, systems integrators, value-added resellers, engineers, and IT departments that

implement these networks. If you are in one of these categories, you probably already know that planning and deploying a WLAN is not as simple as it

sounds. You know you need the right tools to help you navigate the wireless life cycle as you plan, install, maintain, and optimize the WLAN network.

Wi-Fi installers need to:

• Achieve the best possible WLAN performance.

• Optimize network performance for a variety of applications (data and voice).

• Minimize co-channel interference.

• Determine the quantity and best locations for access points.

• Locate unauthorized “rogue” access points and neighboring networks.

• Document installation characteristics.

• Ensure redundant coverage to support seamless roaming.

• Verify post-installation that the WLAN performs as designed.

• Fully document the entire network for reference and future verification purposes.

The importance of site surveys

WLAN network design and site survey are part of the initial phase of the wireless lifecycle. Any company that considers deploying WLANs is destined to go

through all phases. These phases include pre-deployment, including network design and site survey,

post installation verification, troubleshooting, management and optimization. Automating the site survey process simplifies pre-deployment design and post

deployment verification.

Despite the emergence of WLAN systems that advertise the ability to manage themselves, eliminating the need to perform a site survey, Most WLAN

systems manufacturers will readily acknowledge that site surveys remain an important part of designing a WLAN network.

A site survey enables more accurate prediction of infrastructure needs prior to purchasing a WLAN infrastructure, resulting in more accurate time and cost

estimates for the network deployment. It is also a process to help verify the WLAN is performing as designed

after installation. Using a full-featured wireless site survey software can save an enormous amount of time, money, and a great deal of frustration when

compared to paper based site survey techniques.

There are many things to consider when planning a WLAN. Coverage areas must be sufficient to meet the customer requirements, yetthey should not extend

far outside the boundaries of the desired serving area. There needs to be enough signal overlap from adjacent access points to ensure seamless roaming,

but not so much as to cause significant channel interference. In addition, there usually will be requirements for total throughput, throughput per user, and

signal-to-noise ratio. Moreover, the deployment should stay on-time and

on-budget. Deploying a WLAN includes several phases. If the first steps are performed carefully, time and effort will be saved in the subsequent phases. The

unpredictable nature of high-frequency RF signals causes most of the extra work when compared to wired networks.
