Norwegian’s launch of low-cost flights from London to the US, with ticket prices starting at $300, has marked a new page in the development of the global passenger air travel market, according to AviationCV.com, an Eastern European pilot leasing company offering flight crew resourcing and training, as well as crew lease services. With similar services soon to be set up by the likes of Lufthansa and China’s Spring Airlines, the Avia Solutions Group subsidiary explained how the business works and what the implications might be for pilots and cabin crew.

“Less fuel consumption, more aircraft turn-arounds, minimum ground handing and maintenance time, no catering, no multi-class, optimized aircraft ownership and HR-related costs – these are the traditional fac-tors which allow low-cost airlines to keep their ticket prices bottom-most. However, lately the industry has been increasingly noticing that the distinction between traditional and low-cost business models is be-coming less apparent,” said Skaiste Knyzaite, CEO of AviationCV.com.

Over the past several years the cost gap between traditional and low-cost airlines has decreased by an average of 30%, falling from 3.6 to some. 2.5 cents per Available Seat Kilometre, according to figures from KPMG. But Knyza-ite says gaining the desired competitive edge on long-haul operations might prove to be a much bigger challenge.

With both Airbus and Boeing booked up for years ahead, not all carriers looking to launch long-haul low-cost flights will be able to minimize some of their major expenses with newly-built aircraft. Furthermore, turnaround time, a key differentiator of the low-cost short-haul sector, is much the same for long-haul routes for both budget and full-service carriers.

So what allows low-cost carriers to offer cheaper tickets? Apart from more fuel-efficient aircraft, seat number is a factor; Norwegian can squeeze 380 into a 1-class Boeing 787-8, compaed to 240 in a 3-class set-up. The lack of codeshare agreements allows a cheaper distribution network, while more flexible HR-management provides lower personnel-re-lated expenses.

Sourcing both cockpit and cabin crews is one of the main strategies implemented by low-cost carriers when seeking optimal HR-solutions subject to the price and experience of the personnel. But it is the demand for cheaper HR-solutions that has been recently raising more concerns within the pilot/steward community, particularly in Europe.

“European pilots shouldn’t be overly concerned about the risk. While in Europe the aver-age market-wide salary rate maintains at $9-11,000/month, other regions, particularly Asia, are at the $11-15,000/month point due to a substantial shortage of skilled person-nel. However, the same cannot be said of cabin crew which does present a viable op-portunity for the carriers to optimize their HR-related costs, as in certain cases European stewards earn twice as much as their Asian colleagues,” said Knyzaite. “In other words, it is essential to maintain constant monitoring of the job market and continuous commu-nication with potential employees in separate countries and regions in order to be able to balance one’s HR costs. Therefore, as the long-haul low-cost project is concerned, it is yet too early to speculate about its potential success or failure.”

GE Aviation submitted an application to EASA to utilize S10 diesel fuel for its H Se-ries turboprops. The anticipated applica-tion approval would help Brazilian H Series operators lower fuel costs by up to 25%. The average H Series engine consumes 648,000 liters of fuel before its first sched-uled overhaul at 3,600 flight hours. By uti-lizing S10 diesel, operators could save more than $225,000 (US$) on fuel costs between overhauls. The H Series turboprop family – which includes the H75, H80 and H85 en-gines – incorporates GE’s 3-D aerodynamic

design techniques and advanced materials to create a powerful, fuel-efficient, durable engine with no recurrent fuel nozzle inspec-tions and no hot section inspection. On the H Series, GE is also developing an integrated electronic engine control (EEC) for true sin-gle lever power control, and full auto-start capability to help ease pilot workload. GE’s H Series powers nine applications includ-ing the Thrush 510G, Nextant Aerospace G90XT and Aircraft Industries L410 aircraft. The engine family provides the option of a single- or dual-acting governor, allowing customers to have flexibility in propeller se-lection. The engine is targeted at the agri-cultural, business turboprop, commuter and utility aircraft segments.
