Parts of a Computer

Lesson 2

Just like a human body is made up of various parts, a computer is also made up of many parts.

The four important parts of a PC are: CPU, Monitor, Keyboard, and Mouse.

Now let us learn in detail about each of the above parts of the computer

CPUCPU (central processing unit) is the most important part of

the computer. Usually the CPU looks like a rectangular

shaped box. All other parts like mouse, keyboard and monitor

are connected to CPU.

A monitor is like a television. Just like you see movies on the TV screen, the monitor

of a computer is used to show us information like text, pictures etc. The front

portion of the monitor where you actually see the information is called the screen.

The keyboard is made of several small buons called 'keys'. Each key

has a number, leer or word wrien on it. Just as you use a pencil

to write on a paper, the computer needs a keyboard to write text.

A mouse is a pointing device used to point or select items on the computer.

The mouse usually has two or three buons and a small wheel between the buons.

If a song is played on a computer, what is used

for listening to the song?

A speaker is used to listen to the sound.

It is a device that helps you to print

what you see on monitor on a paper

Begin with a brief discussion about computers and inform the students that the computer is like a friend who works for you but it will not do anything until you tell it what to do. Explain that a computer is a machine made of several parts that work together just like our human body. Tell children that they are going to learn the names for the parts of a computer. If a computer is available, show the various parts and explain their function. Otherwise, draw a diagram on the blackboard or distribute a computer diagram with the names of each computer part. A mention of Laptop and how the parts are all combined can be mentioned. Other parts such as printer, speakers, etc. can be covered depending on existing familiarity and the pace at which the children learn. You may want to play a game where children act out being a computer. Individuals or groups can take turns being different parts of a computer. One person can be the keyboard and can give the computer a job to do or a problem to solve. Another person can solve the problem and can tell the answer to the person pretending to be the screen. That person can display the answer. To include more students some children could act out as the wires that connect and send the information from the CPU to the Monitor. A jigsaw puzzle of the computer parts can be given to the children: http://www.computerlab.kids.new.net/parts.htm

Activity 1 : Let us write our name [The teacher can open an application like word, so that students can directly type the letters] As the student has already seen the Keyboard, ask them to type their name “ ” by using the keyboard. While typing, where are the letters showing up? On the screen of the computer which is called the Monitor. They can also type the names of their friends. Try moving the mouse, while moving the mouse, what is moving on the screen? What moves on the screen is a Mouse pointer or the Mouse curser. How did the computer write the names on the screen when you were typing the letters? The CPU is doing this work of telling the computer what to do The paper with all the names can be Printed using a Printer

Activity 2 : Let us hear some music [The teacher can open a music file ] While the music file is playing, where is the sound coming from? From some boxes placed next to the computer These are the speakers. For Laptops / computers with inbuilt speakers, there are no separate speakers

Activity 3: Looking at the CPU Why is the CPU having some many wires? Because the parts like Monitor, Mouse, Keyboard, Speakers, Printer are all connected to the CPU. The CPU controls all these parts.
