Nepal’s Participation in OEWG on Ageing
Kathmandu, December 12, 2016
The seventh sessions of the UN Open Ended Working Group (OEWG) on Ageing
was successfully completed on 12 to 15 December at UN head quarter New York.
Representatives of more than 190 countries were participated in the event for the
purpose of strengthening the protection of the human rights of older persons.
Ageing Nepal facilitated Ms. Meera Sherchan, Chief of Senior Citizen’s Unit of
Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare to participate in the OEWG
representing Nepal.

Saraswati Raj Narayan Institute honored Nishahaya Sewa Sadan Old Age Home
(OAH) by Anandi Devi National Award. Nishahaya Sewa Sadan Old Age Home has
been working in the field of ageing population and been providing shelter to
destitute older people. Sagun Shah, the President of the institute was rewarded
with a cash price of Rs. 51,000.

Allowance to senior citizens through the local Bank. They have already distributed

Sher Bahadur Sharu, 67, remains busy from dawn to dusk in beekeeping. Through
beekeeping he has been able to earn both name and fame in the village. “This is

my only source of income on which I and my family are living” said Sharu. “The
demand of honey is very high. I made an income of Rs. 100, 000 in a year” he
added.

Laxuman Kisan, 66, is the only source of
information for the locals of a dozen remote
villages in Myagdi district, where access to
modern means of communications is not easy.
Kisan spreads information and messages that are
related to social events and decisions taken by
any village meeting. "I took up this job 34 years
ago and continuing. Villagers pay me money and grains for my service, on which I
and my family are living," he said.

Bhim Bahadur Basnet, 92, of Solukhumbu has contributed for the maintenance
and clean-up of five-kilometer road from the amount he received as social
security allowance. For this, Mr. Basnet mobilized 30 local youths by providing
them mid-day meal. Basnet said, "Now the allowance has increased two-fold from
this year and I am planning to spend the annual allowance to maintain rural roads
in my village". He expressed his belief that the making of road in village would
ease the road to heaven for him.

-3 has distributed identity cards (ID) for local senior citizens above 60 years and
differently abled people. The ID card was distributed in the ground of Kanti

Three students of Tribhuwan University have completed their master level thesis
on ageing issues with support from Ageing Nepal Switzerland. The issues were:
1) Ms. Sunita Rai, Socio-economic correlates of Elderly Abuse (A sociological study
at Old Age Homes in Kathmandu).
2) Ms. Prakriti Khanal, Children's Migration and its effect on old age people.
3) Mr. Suman Thapaliya, Earthquake Induced Vulnerability among Older People.

turned into debris by the devastating earthquake of
April 25, 2015. He grieved, “I am one of the major
victims in the whole village. Neither did I get the
government relief amount nor did any
organizations working for victim helped me to
rebuild my house."
Quake Victims Hit by Extreme Cold

Most of the children, senior citizens and postpartum women living in temporary
shelters in Kavre since the earthquake of April 25 are suffering from cold induced
diseases. Maiya Adhikari, 78, of Dapcha has been suffering from chronic
pneumonia ever since she and her family moved into the camp earthquake
displaced. “Living here is hard, especially during winter. I caught pneumonia after
coming here,” she said. Another earthquake victim Rahar Gole of Chyasingkharka
said his 70-year-old mother and his two sons were down with cold. “The shelter is
not warm and the roof is leaky. My mother and children are sick because of cold,”
he laments.

The situation of victims rendered homeless by the April 25 earthquake in Lalitpur
is getting worse due to the extreme cold and lack of aid relief. The elderly and
children have been affected the most as they have begun to fall sick as
temperatures plummeted. They have been suffering from fever, cough,
rheumatism and common cold, among other cold related diseases.

NOTICE FROM GOVERNMENT OF NEPAL
Focal Ministry for Ageing to Take Interns & Support Student Thesis
1) Internship will be accordance with the following:
Among the students submitting an internship application, 9 students will
be chosen from the committee formed under the ministry.
Students participating in internship must have application along with
recommendation letter from two professors of concerned university
/college.
To participate in internship, students must be studying in final year of
bachelor in Social Science Sector (Sociology, Anthropology, Law,
Economics, Gender Study and Social Work)
Out of 9 students selected for internship, 5 will be assigned mobilized from
Feb. 12, 2017 and rest of 4 will be assigned for three/three months from
March 14, 2017.
Students participating in internship will be provided Rs 7000 per month for
their transport and food expenses.
Rest of the things will be decided by the committee formed for the purpose
in the Ministry.
2) Thesis support will be accordance with the following:
Students participating in thesis writing must be in final year of master’s
level study.
Students must submit an application with proposal along with
recommendation of professors of concerned university /college. The
coordination committee formed by the ministry will select 6 students from
the total applicants.
Students involving in thesis will be provided Rs.25,000 after submission of
the thesis to the ministry.
Rest of the other things will be as decided by the Committee under the
Ministry.
