MINNEAPOLIS HEART INSTITUTE FOUNDATION®
PartnershipOpportunities2016 EVENTS
THE MINNEAPOLIS HEART INSTITUTE FOUNDATION® (MHIF)In 1982, a group of cardiologists from the Minneapolis Heart Institute® at Abbott Northwestern Hospital recognized that maintaining the finest patient care required an enduring commitment to cardiovascular research and education. Those physicians founded the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF). Today, MHIF is one of the premier nonprofit cardiovascular and population health research centers in the country.
The Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation is committed to creating a world without heart and vascular disease. With your support, we can continue to find new and better ways to prevent and treat heart and vascular disease.

Founders to the Future: A Celebration of Our Roots & Growth
This invitation-only event is attended by more than 100 MHIF founders and key supporters who come together to celebrate our history and hear from the next generation of pioneering, innovative cardiovascular researchers.
Guests will enjoy heart-healthy appetizers with carefully selected wine pairings while viewing presentations from MHIF research physicians and clinical research interns. Our 2016 event will honor MHIF founder and former Board Chair Raymond Plank, who will be in attendance.
Plank is the retired founder and chairman of Apache Corp., one of the nation’s largest independent oil and gas exploration and production companies. Born and raised in Minnesota, he earned his degree from Yale University and served as a U.S. Army bomber pilot during World War II. From 1954 until 2009, Plank led Apache from inception to an organization with assets of more than $19 billion.
Advised by his father to leave the world better than he found it, Plank has embodied that advice as a leader in civic, educational, business and conservation-related activities. Plank served as MHIF founding board chair until 1986 and continues to be involved as board member emeritus.

BROACH the Subject: An Evening With Cheryl Strayed
New in 2016, BROACH the Subject: An Evening With Cheryl Strayed will raise funds and awareness for our Women’s Heart Health Program, specifically in two areas of research:
The BROACH initiative (Broadening the Role of OB-GYNs in Assessing Cardiovascular Health). For most young women, a yearly visit to their OB-GYN is their only visit to a health care provider. Heart disease is the number 1 killer of women in the U.S., more than all cancers combined. MHIF is expanding its capacity to educate OB-GYNs to work with their patients to ensure all young women can identify cardiovascular risks early and be more proactive with their heart health.
Establishing a Women’s 55 and Under Registry to track women who develop heart disease prior to the age of 55 — the first registry of its kind in the state of Minnesota.
This event features a keynote lecture with Cheryl Strayed, author of the New York Times bestsellers Wild, Tiny Beautiful Things and Brave Enough, and the novel Torch. Strayed is the co-host, along with Steve Almond, of the WBUR podcast Dear Sugar Radio, which originated with her popular Dear Sugar advice column on The Rumpus. She lives in Portland, Oregon.

2016 Heartbeat Gala
The 2016 Heartbeat Gala will be a night to celebrate innovation and discovery, a night to help attendees learn about the life-changing research being done by the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation — and a night to learn about the incredibly innovative work done by our awe-inspiring keynote speakers, NASA astronauts and American heroes, Captains Mark and Scott Kelly!
The gala will be attended by more than 800 cardiovascular physicians and health care professionals, prominent local philanthropists and our corporate partners.
INNOVATION & DISCOVERY From its inception, MHIF has been fully committed to its mission in creating a world without heart and vascular disease. As part of that commitment, MHIF is a leader in identifying innovative treatment solutions for valvular heart disease. The valve team’s findings are being put into practice around the world, saving and changing lives every day.
To continue MHIF’s work, the 2016 Heartbeat Gala will raise funds to support a new Valve Science Center at MHIF. The Valve Science Center will:
1. Study and gain insight into guideline adherence and the barriers to care for the undertreated population of patients with valvular heart disease.
2. Design, develop and implement novel therapies and patient care pathways.
3. Expand the delivery of high-quality, state-of-the-art care for valvular patients.
4. Educate the public on valvular heart disease and the opportunities for improvement in their care.

OCTOBER 2016
U.S. Navy fighter and test pilots. NASA astronauts. American heroes.
The Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation is proud and excited to host identical twin brothers, Captains Scott and Mark Kelly, who participated in NASA’s groundbreaking Twins Study. Scott Kelly spent nearly a year in space, returning to earth in March 2016, while his brother, retired NASA astronaut Mark Kelly, served on the ground as a control model in an unprecedented experiment to understand how space affects the human body.
The Kelly brothers will reflect candidly on the experiences and lessons that shaped their views on teamwork and leadership, how they learned to face and overcome adversities and their personal strategies for adapting to change. From NASA’s Twin Study and Scott’s year in space, to flying in combat and personal reflections on dealing with tragedy, to entertaining stories only a sibling could (or would) reveal, the Kelly brothers’ perspective and lessons will provide a rare insight into new frontiers of medical research.
