System efficiency through

standardisation

The automation company Festo

as a global player has made the

international standardisation of

automation technology, parti-

cularly also in the area of pro-

cess technology and process

engineering its objective. Not

just for reasons of rationalisa-

tion, but for reasons of safety

and commercial considerations,

the increased use of intelligent

pneumatics makes sense. A

universally compatible techni-

cal basis can drastically sim-

plify the use of components

and enable the user to be more

flexible when it comes to future

developments. The findings of

on-site analyses clearly show

that the use of pneumatics can

open up enormous untapped

potential for operators.

A diversity of tasks

The generation, transport, treat-

ment and disposal of greatly

varying types of fluids and bulk

material exhibiting free flow

properties, such as coffee

beans or powder, sand, gravel,

cement, active carbon and many

more. All these manual or auto-

mated fluidic processes form

part of process technology and

process automation.

The composition, consistency,

flow characteristics and hazard

categories of associated sub-

stances, etc. are typical of such

fluidic masses. Different pro-

cess valves are used to control

such fluids, either in on/off or

analogue operation, for in-

stance to control flow volumes,

for dosing, mixing different

streams of substances. Depen-

ding on the area of application,

valves from the smallest diame-

ter (e.g. a 1/4" ball valve) right

up to a “walk-on” diameter (e.g.

a butterfly valve or gate valve of

2,500 mm = DN 2.500, 100")

are used. These pose specific

requirements with regard to

actuator size, construction and

automation.

Costly fulfilment of require-

ments

Irrespective of whether munici-

pal or industrial systems in dif-

ferent industry branches and of

different process technology

criteria are concerned, i.e. from

filtration systems through to

batch processing, owing to the

universally growing require-

ments for productivity and ever

more stringent safety regula-

tions on the part of the authori-

ties, industrial concerns and

municipal system operators

require individually adapted

solutions based on standards.

The standards created in the

course of time are essential if

the competitive edge and the

end user’s independence are to

be ensured. Standardised,

multifunctional components

therefore are the answer here.

Concepts for maximum effi-

ciency – Systematically regu-

lated!

Few branches of industry

where automation is being

introduced are as diverse as

process technology and pro-

cess engineering. The Festo

answer to wide ranging pro-

duction systems and ultra sen-

sitive handling of fluids and

bulk material of different

hazard categories is flexibility

tailored to individual appli-

cations combined with maxi-

mum possible standardisation,

thereby creating maximum

efficiency.

Technology with future

Festo can fulfil a system concept

right as of today and ensure

individual solutions for your

application specific require-

ments with its enormous spec-

trum of possibilities available to

pneumatic users from a single

component through to an adap-

table and expandable system.

With Festo, the user is able to

make full use of the all the

technological benefits of pneu-

matics when it comes to the

regulating, dosing and inter-

rupting of fluid flow. The

modular design of Festo system

components provides the ideal

supposition for the multitude of

different process valves.

Pneumatics characterise an

extremely versatile, sturdy and

technically easy to control tech-

nology and are equal to almost

any task in the process indu-

stry. Easy to install, distribute,

with sturdy valves and drives

consisting of a minimum of

components, low-maintenance

and reliable, overload-proof,

flexible and explosion-proof by

nature – the benefits of com-

pressed air are enormous.

Savings potential inclusive

Intelligent pneumatics and

automation from Festo are

already established in nume-

rous areas. The use of pneuma-

tics is generally considerably

more economical and reliable in

typical areas of application

than using electrical and

hydraulic actuators and also

manually operated process val-

ves. Particularly manually ope-

rated gate valve solutions can

be automated with a minimum

of complexity by means of

pneumatics, with the added

benefit of a considerable

savings potential, be it a new

installation, reconstruction or

retrofitting.

Economically regulated!

Always on the plus side are

those who know how to com-

bine the strength of a system

partner with the benefits of

pneumatics.

to come, for instance in that in

the near or distant future even

more interfaces for associated

technologies are going to be

created. With the use of Festo

pneumatics the system opera-

tor can be sure of remaining at

the leading edge of technology

of tomorrow.

The trend toward integrated

treatment plants

These plants vary from small,

compact types to large installa-

tions. Growing environmental

requirements and high cost

pressure call for new processes

and technologies that require a

high degree of automation to

ensure reliable and economical

operation. The growing trend is

for treatment systems to be in-

corporated into the production

processes in order to reduce

costs and eliminate the existing

boundaries between the pro-

duction machine or system and

supply and disposal engin-

eering.

Industry needs water for the

production and supply of

manufacturing equipment. Vir-

tually all branches of industry

require water to be processed

or purified.

Be it for the production of a car,

a semiconductor chip or for the

production of electricity in a

power station, water treatment

systems are increasingly in

demand. Witness the fact that

• 120.000 l of water are requi-

red to produce 1 car

• 570 l of water are required to

produce 1 chip

• 2.28 l are required to produce

1 kWh of electricity

Process water technology

Water – the precious elixir of

life and valuable commodity

all in one

Compact construction using

pneumatics

Smaller process valves such as

those used with ball valves or

diaphragm valves powered via

pneumatics are often used in

compact systems. The CP tech-

nology from Festo is the ideal

answer for this sector. The

extremely small design of this

range with high flow rates and

an excellent price/performance

ratio very soon dispel any idea

of using individual valves or

valve manifolds. A detenting

manual override on every valve,

compact digital input and out-

put modules, choice of fieldbus

protocols, all to IP65 open up a

considerable savings potential.

In addition to pilot valves or

valve terminals, Festo can sup-

ply ball valves in virtually any

design, plus all the essential

components and systems for

compressed air preparation,

tubing and connection techno-

logy.

Applications:

• Automotive industry

• Electronics

• Food and beverages industry

• Power stations

• Biotechnology

• Pharmaceuticals

• Paper industry

• Chemical industry

Packaged services

Festo offers a comprehensive

package of products, systems

and services. The latest actua-

tor technology for on/off valves

and control valves, turnkey con-

trol cabinets with valve termi-

nals, communication interfaces

(fieldbuses or LAN) and decen-

tralised controllers/I/O’s. All of

these and components for com-

pressed air preparation can be

delivered worldwide in identical

design and quality.

Festo provides support for ope-

rators, planners and system

designers alike with technical

advice, concept design, docu-

mentation for requests to ten-

der, software tools and the con-

figuration of compressed air

equipment. Also available on

request are on-site service and

maintenance contracts.

Applications:

• Sewage treatment plants

• Pump stations

• Rainwater basins

• Biowaste treatment

• Sludge treatment

• Irrigation

To treat waste water optimally

and also economically is a

challenge for industry and

municipal authorities alike.

Here, technically and economi-

cally applicable solutions

using pneumatics are the

answer.

Waste water treatment can be

divided into two large sub-

areas:

• Municipal waste water and

water plants work with rather

large valves preferring the

use of pneumatic linear

actuators (diameters of

200 mm to 2.500 mm, DN

200 to DN 2,500) including

canalisation, pump stations,

rainwater basins and the

• Industrial market with wide-

ranging wastewater treat-

ment and in part extremely

costly water treatment, where

the use of process valves

with diameters in excess of

400 mm (DN 400) is fairly

rare, pneumatic quarter turn

actuators being the preferred

choice here.

Reliable and safe solutions

In both sectors pneumatic drive

and automation technology

offer considerable technical and

financial advantages. When you

also take into consideration the

requirements for explosion-

proof products for example in

digestion tanks or rainwater

basins, pneumatics are a signifi-

cant factor when equipping

waste water treatment plants.

The advantage of pneumatics is

sturdiness, reliability and the

simple concept of pneumatic

drive technology in what are to

some extent extremely challen-

ging environmental conditions

(waste water, flooding, heat,

cold ....). Further aspects which

alike with technical advice, con-

cept design, documentation for

requests to tender, software

tools and the configuration of

compressed air equipment.

on-site service and maintenan-

ce contracts.

Applications:

• Water works

• Desalination plants

• Elevated tanks

• Pump stations

Irrespective of whether it is

spring water or salt water – a

number of treatment steps are

nevertheless required in order

for untreated water to become

drinkable. The treatment of

drinking water takes place in

filtration installation ranging

from simple sand filters

through to membrane

filtrations.

Desalination of drinking water

Reverse osmosisor evaporation

systems are used in the case of

the desalination of salt water or

brackish water. Installations of

this type generally consist of a

large number of individual filter

elements including the neces-

sary raw water treatment, disin-

fection and storage of drinking

water as well as its distribution

to the consumer. Additional fac-

tors to be taken into considera-

tion in the supply chain are ele-

vated tanks and pump stations.

The operation of these systems

and cleaning of filters (reversi-

ble flow filters) is generally

effected by means of a large

number of process valves,

usually in the form of butterfly

valves. Pneumatics in the form

of drives and automation tech-

nology therefore play a con-

siderable financial/economic

role.

Reliable and cost effective

complete solutions

Together with selected process

valve partners, Festo offers

complete solutions, which

include the appropriate actua-

tor technology, control cabinets

with valve terminals and the

required compressed air equip-

ment. The major factor for cost

reduction is on the part of con-

trol technology, since pneuma-

tic actuators require few inputs

and outputs and digital and

analogue process data can be

processed directly on the spot

via valve terminals. The high

operational reliability of a

pneumatic system represents

another important advantage.

Problem-free adaptation to

growing requirements

Virtually no other segment of

the wide-ranging process indu-

stry entails such a diversity of

end products as the food indu-

stry. Any food, be it dairy pro-

duce, meat products, bakery

products, juices, beer or wine

are products on a worldwide

scale and pose their own

requirements with regard to

handling and the production of

the respective end products.

The highly dynamic food indu-

stry market therefore requires

manufacturers of systems and

machinery to display a high

degree of flexibility with regard

to modularity, reducing costs

and time whilst adhering to

hygiene regulations and strin-

gent standards.

The ideal mix – branch-specific

components and standard

pneumatics

Festo can offer a winning solu-

tion to meet all of these require-

ments. Branch-specific compo-

nents both for closed and open

systems, coupled with the com-

prehensive range of standard

pneumatics offer the user

everything from a single source.

Interdisciplinary competence

and technological leadership

make Festo the ideal partner

both for system builders and

food industry producers – with

prompt, worldwide service,

a broad spectrum of planning

tools and comprehensive advice

on site by specialist staff.

Areas of application

• Water treatment

• Dosing, mixing

• Cleaning, transport of

cleaning chemicals

• Filling

• Sorting and packaging

• Waste water disposal

In the food industry both open

and closed production systems

can be found throughout the

entire production chain and

pneumatic products and soluti-

ons form an integral compo-

nent part of these and fulfil a

multitude of important func-

tions.

In closed systems, pneumatics

assume the control of various

flows of media such as cleaning

agents, industrial water, pro-

duct flow, etc. This is where

pneumatic solutions excel with

their reliability, flexibility and

effective performance.

In the case of open systems for

the further processing of food,

pneumatics are used for nume-

rous functions such as the

moving and positioning of

machine components or ejec-

tion, separating, cutting, sor-

ting, etc of the food products in

question. Corrosion resistant,

easy to clean pneumatic solu-

tions fully meet these require-

ments.

Food industry

Flexible and modular solutions

are imperative for a dynamic

market such as the food indu-

stry.

Page 10: Partner to the

1918

Power station processes

Round-the-clock operation such

as in power stations requires

high quality components which

have to ensure the safe and

reliable control of process val-

ves in operation, often also in

high temperatures. The enor-

mous number of process valves

used and the various circuits

require a clearly configured and

logical automation structure.

These requirements therefore

set the scene for the ideal solu-

tion – customised pneumatic

solutions from Festo. Irrespec-

tive of whether these are for

desulphurisation, ash removal

or carbonisation systems, a

multitude of valve terminal

types, controllers and service

units are available to create

turnkey control cabinet solu-

tions tailor-made for each appli-

cation. Additional components

in the control chain such as

pneumatic actuators, sensor

boxes or Namur valves com-

plete the product range.

Natural gas – the fuel of the

future

When it comes to environ-

mentally friendly energy, for

instance in the area of motor

vehicles, one clear winner emer-

ges – natural gas. Cars operated

by natural gas offer an interest-

ing alternative to petrol, since

this technology is now fully

developed and the network of

refuelling stations is continually

expanding. The use of pneuma-

tic actuators on high-pressure

valves is already standard in

natural gas refuelling stations

today. The sturdy, maintenance-

free and explosion-proof design

of pneumatic actuators are con-

vincing factors which have led

to the preferred use of these

systems. A further advantage

when using pneumatic compo-

nents in natural gas refuelling

stations is the fact that com-

pressed natural gas in itself can

be used as a drive medium.

Heating and air conditioning

technology

Another area of application for

pneumatic components is the

automation of heating and air

conditioning systems. The

requirement for automated pro-

cess valves is considerable,

irrespective of whether it is for

cooling or ventilation systems.

Also special designs are often

required for on/of or control

functions, which require cor-

responding actuator flexibility.

Here again, the broad spectrum

of products and special designs

from Festo offer a suitable,

reliable solution.

In times of high environmental

pollution and limited resour-

ces, alternative energies are

becoming increasingly more

important.

Nowadays, entire installations

and plants are equipped with

the latest automation technolo-

gy both with regard to produc-

tion and supply, whereby parti-

cular importance is attached to

high standards of safety with

regard to operational safety

and reliability during conti-

nuous operation.

Energy technology

Process safety, a must for

clean energy production and

supply – today and in future

Page 11: Partner to the

Diversity with surprisingly

flexible technology

A complete product range con-

sisting of branch-specific pro-

ducts and standard pneumatics

is the competent answer from

Festo to these requirements,

be it

• Linear or quarter turn actua-

tors (scotch-yoke and rack-

and-pinion actuator),

• Namur valve or valve

terminal,

• Fieldbus or conventional

actuation,

• Standard or hazardous areas,

• On/off or control valve.

Thanks to strict compliance

with all standards in force and

the high standard of quality

and flexibility of pneumatics,

the possibilities for the applica-

tion and combination of all

these components are virtually

limitless. With these, Festo

offers both users and system

builders in the bulk materials

industry the possibility of sour-

cing the entire automation

technology from a single sup-

plier, allied with worldwide ser-

vice and export advice.

Areas of application

• Metering units, mixers, dryers

• Filling systems

• Pneumatic and mechanical

bulk material transport

• Conveyor systems

• Silos (filling, discharging)

Powder, granulates, flour –

dusty, dirty, hazardous envi-

ronments such as occur during

the transport and storage of

bulk material are the predesti-

ned area of application for

sturdy pneumatics.

Wherever particle systems

(bulk material type sub-

stances), such as in processes

are handled, the behaviour of

motion or flow characteristics

of these substances are of

major significance when it

comes to their transport and

storage. Furthermore, the cur-

rent state of solidification is

another decisive factor apart

from the composition of the

bulk material. Bulk material in

fluidic form (e.g. in a fluidised

bed) therefore behaves like a

fluid and in a compacted state

(e.g. in brick or tablet form) like

a solid body. The storage or

transport of bulk materials

generally involves states bet-

ween these two extremes. In

this case we are dealing with

slightly compressed bulk mate-

rials, which exhibit different

bulk material is different. This

is why solutions for the bulk

material industry require a

great deal of know-how as well

range.

mechanical characteristics with

regard to their storage and

transport. The bulk materials

industry therefore involves an

enormous variety of standard

and application-specific pro-

cess valves. Butterfly valves,

gate valves, shut-off valves and

penstocks with different hou-

sings and sealing materials and

diameters therefore all have

exacting requirements with

regard to the flexibility and

reliability of the automation

technology to be used.

In the starring role – valve

terminals

What is more, valve terminals

also play a major role through-

out the entire process of paper

production. These ensure the

reliable communication and

open and closed-loop control

of process valves through the

entire production process on in

the form of intelligent, fieldbus

networked participants in the

control chain.

Eco friendly production of an

eco friendly product

Paper is an ecologically compa-

tible product, for whose pro-

duction water is the most im-

portant medium. The use of

environmentally friendly tech-

nologies and energy for the

production of paper is therefore

becoming increasingly impor-

tant. Here again, pneumatics

take the centre stage since

compressed air, being an

odourless, colourless and

natural energy, represents an

extremely eco friendly drive

medium.

Areas of application

• Raw material handling

• Stock preparation and hydra-

pulping

• Draining off water and drying

• Sorting

• Cleaning systems

• Bleaching and washing

processes

• Filtration systems

Paper is an indispensable pro-

duct of our culture both in

terms of economic wealth and

consumer society. Without pro-

tective packaging made of

paper, cartons and cardboard,

goods would perish and there-

fore in many cases be beyond

the means of the average citi-

zen. In the sphere of hygiene,

paper has therefore become

the norm.

The production of paper is

synonymous with complex pro-

cesses and production under

continuous load and in part in

aggressive conditions. Water,

sludge, fibrous material, waste

paper and pollutants of various

consistencies pass through the

production stations and need

to be separated out, sorted or

filtered. Here pneumatics offer

the optimum solution in the

form of actuators for gate and

butterfly valves. These fulfil all

the requirements with regard to

variable speed, smooth sur-

faces, sturdy and maintenance-

free design, corrosion resi-

stance, continuous load and

overload protection, etc.

Paper industry

It is impossible to imagine life

today without paper. Even in

this age of electronic media, it

is still the most important

means of communication.

Page 13: Partner to the

2524

Safety – a crucial aspect

Automation systems that per-

mit a greater transparency of

systems and processes are

therefore required to fulfil

these conditions and to facili-

tate a high degree of automa-

tion and meet all the require-

ments regarding explosion pro-

tection. The straightforward

answer for requirements such

as these is pneumatics. The

flexibility and reliability of

advanced pneumatic auto-

mation solutions and the inhe-

rent explosion protection of

pneumatic actuators are con-

vincing arguments in favour of

pneumatics. This is why this

technology is already used as

standard in the chemical and

petrochemical industry. The

safety setting of process valves

frequently required in this

branch of industry, for instance

in the event of power failure,

can be easily and economically

realised through the use of

single-acting actuators.

Gas replaces compressed air

What is more, only pneumatics

offer the possibility of utilizing

some of the in part existing or

transported gases as a drive

medium for pneumatic compo-

nents. This characteristic is of

particular economic advantage,

since these gases already occur

in a compressed state and the

generation of compressed air

can therefore be drastically

reduced or even completely

dispensed with.

System partnership for deman-

ding requirements

This is why system planners,

builders and transnational che-

mical concerns require a relia-

ble partner for pneumatics –

with global presence, high pro-

duct quality, first-class service

and innovative technology.

Festo meets all of these criteria

spot on and with a complete

range of pneumatic system

solutions is therefore the ideal

partner for the chemical and

petrochemical industry.

These days more than ever, the

planning of systems and

installations in the chemical

and petrochemical industry is

governed by the high demands

with regard to product safety,

product quality and price com-

petition. Owing to the growing

trend towards globalisation,

the long term success of

system planners and builders

in this market segment can

only be ensured if these crite-

ria are met.

The safety factor in particular

needs to be taken into conside-

ration during system planning

in order to ensure the protec-

tion of people and the environ-

ment. In addition to this, an

adequate degree of flexibility

needs to be incorporated when

planning systems in order to

ensure scope for future expan-

sion or modernisation.

Chemical and petrochemical

industry

Today, life without chemical

and petrochemical products is

virtually unthinkable. All the

more important then is maxi-

mum safety and reliability in

the production of these.

Basic units

What basic units are possible in

an installation?

• The direct actuation of an

actuator via a solenoid valve

• The assembly of a valve

manifold for the actuation

of actuator modules

• The assembly of valve

terminals for the actuation

of actuator modules

• The integration of a wide

range of different bus

systems

• The control of individual

installations

• The realisation of safety

systems, which will function

even in the event of power

failure

Safety – four-by- four

Harmonised, modular compo-

nents from a single source

ensure the safety of process

technology applications.

Moreover, appropriately instal-

led pneumatics also ensure

reliable operation in the event

of power failure. Central or

local reservoirs and valve inter-

connection adapted to indivi-

dual applications ensure that

a valve is switched to a safe

position.

Control chain

A smoothly functioning system

is not just made up of an actua-

tor, process valve and method

of actuation. A complex network

of valves, compressed air prepa-

ration components and connec-

tors, etc. need to be taken into

account when installing a

system. Very few suppliers sup-

ply all the necessary compo-

nents from a single source.

However, maximum reliability is

achieved only through a control

chain procured from a single

supplier, because only in this

way can a supplier be sure that,

from compressed air prepa-

ration and actuators through to

valve terminals, all functions are

seamlessly interacting and that

subsequent after sales forms an

integral part of the system. Opti-

mised interfaces facilitate the

system concept and its reali-

sation.

ration. This is why compressors

should always be specifically

configured for an individual

application.

To this end, Festo offers the

software tool AirCon for the

configuration of compressed air

equipment in the process indu-

stry. AirCon calculates the size

of a compressor according to

the actuators planned and their

actual displacement per time

unit. AirCon can also configure,

store and document actuators

for appropriate process valves

and reservoirs and automatic-

ally takes into consideration air

dryers. All calculations are

determined in accordance with

DIN 1945/ISO 1217. AirCon has

been developed in conjunction

with a leading compressor

manufacturer and is available in

4 languages.
