Barwaaqo Farmers Cooperative (BFC) is the largest commercial cooperative in Somaliland in agri-business, established in October 2012, with its head office based in Hargeisa. Its operations extend across the Somaliland regions. The cooperative’s main business is the provision of inputs for agricultural production, market access for smallholders’ production, as well as financial, technical and logistical services to local farmers and introduce new models. Having absence of long term development and unkind living conditions the smallholder farmers of these communities determined to establish an indigenous cooperative, and after in depth discussions more than 650 farmers joined. Farmers BFC is being formed from the acquisition of local farmers. The BFC created by Small holder business to help farmers, agricultural service providers, and economic development professionals work together to develop agribusiness- the products, services, markets and business structures that are needed to sustain small farm holders and contribute to the local economy in Somaliland. Despite the impressive successes enjoyed by many group-owned agricultural businesses, information about this approach as a strategy for sustaining agriculture is widely scattered and hard to come by. This site begins to fill that void by providing access to small farmers’ production commercialization, business production, distribution and marketing concepts, models and best practices. In so doing we hope to not only strengthen farmer efforts at collaboration, but equally important to contribute to the development of a strong network of agriculture service providers and business specialists supportive of their efforts.
