PART II

Water is life: Outdoor ecology in the Black Forest

Baiersbronn: summer

Baiersbronn: winter

Outdoor ecology:river Murg

• Without human influence most bodies of water would be oligotrophic (mineral nutrient-poor)

• Through human influence, vast amounts of nitrogen compounds and phosphates can pass into open water resources

• Agriculture is the main source as fertilisers can be washed into lakes and rivers by the surface water

• The effect of this mineral supply is eutrophication

Outdoor ecology in a body of standing water

• We took water samples from different places by using sample bottles

Methods

We analysed the water with regard to:

pH

nitrites

nitrates

carbonate hardness

water hardness

Results (average)

Snow River Stream Tap water

pH 6,4 6,8 6,4 6,4

Nitrites 0 0 0 0

Nitrates 25 25 25 0

CarbonateHardness

Water hardness

<6°d <6°d >6°d >6°d

Conclusion

• We analysed the water during the last weeks (winter)

• The water conditions seem to be allright

The water quality of our Black Forest valley seems to be acceptable
