2.2.2.2. TheTheTheThe CityCityCityCity

According to The City in History, a city is is primarily a space of culture, society, andcivilization. Besides, a city is also defined as the center of economic growth, technologicaladvances and cultural production

There are a few phase in the development of the city. In the past time, a small group ofancient people build their houses beside the river as they need river to drink and foragriculture. Soon, lot and lot of people gather at the place and the first city is born. Thesefist phase cities are Mesopotamia Egypt, India and China. These cities grew in size whenthe cavilation and the trade occur. A similar path was taken by later civilizations such asthe Greek, Iranian, Roman and the Great Zimbabwe.

The second phase in the development of cities occur with the industrial revolution inEurope around the middle of the 18th century. Factories needed a large labour force and arise in commercial activity created new opportunities in cities. Looking for employmentand a better life, people moved from rural areas into cities in greater numbers than everbefore.

The third phase began after the Second World War. The largest and fastest growth in theworld's urban population has taken place in the decades since 1950. As the world economybecame more international and grew in size, cities all over the world began to grow largerat a very fast pace. Most of this growth has been concentrated in Asia, Latin America andAfrica, although some U.S. cities such as Phoenix and Los Angeles have been growing atthe same pace.

Overall, throughout the information that stated at above the cite grow as the economy ofthe city grows. The ancient grew as they found the source to carry out their economicsactivities like agriculture, so the other people gather at there. While the population rises forthe phase two cities when the people need to work the industries. The phase there citiesgrows larger at a very fast pace

Population of people, services and infrastructures make a city. Population of people meansa lot of people gather and live together in a place. A city cannot to be call as a city as noone willing to live at here. Services means the housing area, food, water, transportation, electricity, places for reaction like museums, shops, school and so on. While infrastructuresrepresents the roads, electric lines and other things that support the services. This all are thebasic element of the city.

To make a good city, it need to consider the citizen's requirement culture and bring benefitof the citizen. Surendra Hiranandani state that prerequisite of a good city is mixed useneighborhoods, density and walkable streets. London, New York, Hong Kong and Tokyoare great cities for this sole reason. These cities have residential, offices, retail, hospitalityall adjacent to each other and buildings are built with negligible or zero car parks. Inconclusion, a good city is to have the basic element of a city should has and improve it ormodify it according to requirement of the citizen.

A future city is a city that build by solve the problem that occur at the present cities. Thefuture city is also the city with improvement of living qualities. Most of the future city plannow will be the eco city plan or city that cover by green plants. The future city mostly willbe high-technology and bring convenient to the citizens.

Ancient CitiesDerinkuyu

- located at Cappadocia, Turkey-the largest multi-function underground city

It has 18 stories and 85m deep It contains all the usual rooms found in an undergroundcity (stables, cellars, storage rooms, refectories, churches, wineries etc.) . A large roomwith a barrel vaulted ceiling on the second floor was a missionary school, the rooms to theleft being study rooms.

3rd and 4th floors on wards the descent is by way of vertical staircases which lead to acruciform plan church on the lowest floor.

From these city, I knew that a basic element of a city for example, it should has housing, religions area, circulations and so on. I also learn about an underground city's structure, itshould be linking from one part to another part.

ForbiddenForbiddenForbiddenForbidden CityCityCityCity

It was first built throughout 14 years during the reign of Emperor Chengzu in theMing Dynasty (1368-1644) It is the best-preserved imperial palace in China and also thelargest ancient palatial structure in the world

The structure of the Forbidden city is divided into two parts. The southern section,or the Outer Court was where the emperor exercised his supreme power over thenation. The northern section, or the Inner Court was where he lived with his royalfamily. It show the concept of the important part of the city is protected by theother part of the city.

So, for my future city,I took this concept to arrange the element of the city. I putthe government building at the center of the city because it is the important partof the city as the government manage the city.

Present CitiesBeijing, China

Beijing is the capital of the People's Republic of China and one of the most populous citiesin the world. The earliest traces of human habitation in the Beijing municipality were foundin the caves of Dragon Bone Hill near the village of Zhoukoudian in Fangshan District, where Peking Man lived. Homo erectusfossils from the caves date to 230,000 to 250,000years ago. Paleolithic homo sapiens also lived there more recently, about 27,000 years ago.

The arrangement of the city is basically consist of two part which is the outer city, alsoknown as the Chinese City while the inner city was the Imperial City.

Future Cities

Russians Plan Domed Underground City Powered by Solar

Nickolav Lvutemosiv and a group of architects from AB Elis Ltd. want to convert the2 million-square-meter space to a domed city powered by the strong Siberian sun. Thecity will be a garden city. The concept future urban development would accommodate100,000 people on three levels, as well as a vertical farm, forests and recreationalareas. The sheltering glass dome that makes it all possible will be covered by solarphotovoltaic cells that produce enough energy to run the city as a carbon neutral entity.

From the city, it shows that it is necessary to build a eco green city since the presentenvironment is polluted now. I also took the element from this city into my future city.I also use the a glass cover to protect my city.

6.6.6.6. TheTheTheThe ““““XXXX”””” CityCityCityCityThe " X" city started at 50 years ago. It was destroyed by flood, earthquake and haze. Thecitizen are malaysian and the main culture and religious are Muslim, Buddhist, Christianand Hindu.

Therefore a good future city for them would be a city that consist of their culture and habit. For example, for Muslim, there should be a mosque or surau near their house or workingplace because they need to pray for times per day.

The main income of the " X" city is industry and business. Therefore my citizen work infactories and offices and these are required in the new city.

7.7.7.7. TheTheTheThe NewNewNewNew ““““XXXX”””” CityCityCityCity //// TheTheTheThe BubbleBubbleBubbleBubble

CityCityCityCitySince the " X " city is destroyed by the flood and earthquake and the condition of the air isalso bad so I decided to build an underground city. An underground city can resits to theflood and earthquake. The haze cannot flew through the underground also.

The city is consists of a few circular section that link together . From its plan, it looks like afew bubble that link together, therefore I named it as the bubble city.

The arrangement of the elements of the city is refer to the Forbidden City and Beijing, theimportance part of the city which is the government building will be placed at the center ofcity and is surround by the other elements.

The city has 4 residential area, 2 business area and 2 industry area that will contain a policestation, clinic, fire station and a surau due to the safety and the religious issue.

The residential area contain block of houses and a garden is built between it so the citizencan communicate with each other at the garden. A power station is also built at the area tosupply enough energy to the entire area.

The city center contain the government building, city square, sport center, gardens, generalhospital, police department, fire department, conversion center, court and education areaand hotel, commercial area and tourist attractive like museum and the culture street.Besides, the army base of city is built near the airport.

Next, there is also an agricultural area within the city to provide the city food.

The transportation of the city will be underground train, public bus and bicycle. The citizenis not allow to drive their own car to prevent the road accident occur. They are encourageto walk or cycle to solve the obesity problem.

The city will gain the energy by the hydro-electrical method while the wind turbine andburning of rubbish will be alternative to generate electric. The citizen will also get enoughoxygen as there are many tree planted around the city. The tree will release oxygen to thecitizen during photosynthesis. The cover of each section of the city is made by glass andthe a fan is at the middle to provide cool air for the citizen and lights is also be at the coverto give the brighter view for the citizen.

In conclusion, the bubble city is a great city plan as it contain the eco green concept andable to solve the "X" city problem.
