Find A Fault

This is a rough image of the san Andreas fault which part of is located fairly near here in Parkfield. The San Andreas fault is a strike slip fault. Not just a strike slip fault however but a right lateral strike slip fault. Which can be seen as one looks across the area.

Find 2 Weathering ProcessesFrost Wedging occurs when water seeps into cracks in the rock and then freezes which causes the rock to split along the cracks. Because water expands when it freezes, it is able to break the rock in a clean vertical break like the picture.

Oxidation occurs when oxygen reacts with iron and creates iron oxide which creates hematite, a reddish-brown iron oxide, as shown here.

Find Mass Wasting

In this picture you can see the areas where creep has occurred. There are deep indents where the soil has moved downhill. This process is not fast it happens when an area freezes and thaws alternately. This picture was taken in the Grapevine which is subject to snow and great heat as well.

This is an image of a marine environment which was taken at the more shallow depths of Morro bay Beach. Marine environments can extend to depths of as much as 900 miles.

This is an image of a creek that flows through San Louis Obispo downtown. It is a popular tourist attraction. This creek flows rapidly twenty-four-seven and therefore has the same erosional activity as a stream would and therefore falls into the category of a continental environment.
