Weekly Halachah—Parshas Sisa R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]
Must I hold the challah when reciting HaMotzi?
As a general rule, one who is reciting any berachah on food is supposed to hold it at that time, to minimize any delay before eating. Ideally, we should hold it in our stronger hand, to demonstrate respect for the berachah. However, these are not absolute requirements so long as the food is present or immediately accessible during the berachah.
Regarding HaMotzi, specifically, there are additional reasons to hold the bread during the berachah, related to the symbolism of the ten fingers holding the bread. Finally, on Shabbos there is yet another reason to hold the bread, to show love for the two loaves which parallel the miraculous manna.
(Berachos 43b, Shabbos 117b and Rashi there; Yerushalmi Challah 1:6; Tosafot Berachot 38b v’hilchita, Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 167:3‐4; 206:4‐5, 274:1; Mishneh Berurah 167:22‐24; 206:17‐19; Aruch haShulchan Orach Chaim 206:7, 274:2‐3)

QUESTIONS FOR PARSHAS KI SISA BY: THE RAV
First Aliyah: (30:11‐16) How does the donation of a half‐shekel atone for someone’s soul?
Second Aliyah: (32:9) Why does Hashem describe Bnei Israel as a “stiff‐necked people” – how is that descriptive of their rebellion against Hashem by building the Golden Calf?
Third Aliyah: (33:12) What did Moshe mean when saying to Hashem, “You haven’t told me whom You are sending with me”?
Fourth Aliyah: (33:18) What was Moshe asking to see when he asked to be shown Hashem’s “glory”?
Fifth Aliyah: (34:1) Why did Hashem restate here that Moshe had broken the original Tablets?
Sixth Aliyah: What is the point of stating the holy days at this point?
Seventh Aliyah: (34:35) Did Moshe wear a veil on his face for the entire 40‐year sojourn in the desert?
