Prac cing Igna an Detachment in Poli cal Times

Today’s Gospel calls states, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” This is easier proclaimed than lived out as we seek to be Christ-like to all. Dorothy Day noted, “I really only love God as much as I love the person I love the least.” In these poli cally fraught mes I have found it helpful to engage St Igna us call to detachment in order live out the struggle of loving those I love the least. The excerpt below is from the na onal Jesuit document on civic engagement and Igna an discernment. This sec on of the document focuses on detach-ment. The prac ce of detachment is valuable in this poli cal moment as well as in loving our neighbors in our daily life.

A big, worthwhile spiritual challenge is to prac ce detachment from our own poli cal views. We are called to make choices in light of the Gospel. In the Spiritual Exercises, St. Igna us writes that God creat-ed humans to “praise, reverence, and serve God,” and we should only engage with things, experiences and people as much as they help us fulfill that spe-cific mission. This means leaving aside unhealthy a achments to whatever it is that might get in the way of loving God and neighbor.

One prominent source of a achment is our own in-dividual poli cal opinions, especially in this polar-ized era. We can be so commi ed to our biases that recent studies suggest that individuals’ poli cal ide-ologies o en shape their moral framework, instead of the other way around — the opposite of what our faith demands.

“Our challenge is to let the teaching of the Church, our faith, the Gospel, the person of Christ himself, to be the light by which we organize our poli cs and our involvement in the poli cal field, and in the po-li cal world,” Bishop Daniel E. Flores of Brownsville, Texas, said on this topic in a February 2020 inter-view. “We have to be involved in society, but the Gospel has to be the principal lens through which we judge things. Prac cando Desapego Ignaciano en Tiempos Polí cos

El Evangelio de hoy dice, “Amaras a tu prójimo como a mismo.” Esto es más fácil de proclamar que de vivir al tratar de ser como Cristo para todos. Dorothy Day remarca, “Sólo amo a Dios tanto como amo a la persona que amo menos.” En estos empos tensos polí camente me ha resultado ú l vivir el llamado al desapego de San Ignacio para poder vivir con la difi-cultad de amar a aquellos que amor menos. El si-guiente extracto es del documento Jesuita nacional en compromiso civil y discernimiento Ignaciano. Es-ta sección del documento se centra en desapego. La prac ca de desapego es valiosa en estos momentos polí cos tanto como al amor al prójimo en nuestra vida diaria.

Un desa o grande, valioso espiritualmente es prac -car desapego de nuestras propias ideas polí cas. Estamos llamados a hacer elecciones basados en el Evangelio. En los Ejercicios Espirituales, San Ignacio escribe que Dios creo a los humanos para “alabar, reverencias y servir a Dios,” y que solo debemos co-nectar con cosas, experiencias y gente mientras nos ayudan a cumplir la misión especifica. Esto significa dejar de lado apegos que interfieren en el camino a amar a Dios y al prójimo.

Una fuente prominente de apego con nuestras pro-pias opiniones polí cas individuales, especialmente en este era polarizada. The bishops of the United States describe this consistency beau fully in their document “Communi es of Salt and Light”:

At a me of rampant individualism, we stand for family and community. At a me of intense consum-erism, we insist it is not what we have, but how we treat one another that counts. In an age that does not value permanence or hard work in rela onships, we believe marriage is forever and children are a blessing, not a burden. At a me of growing isola-

on, we remind our na on of its responsibility to the broader world, to pursue peace, to welcome im-migrants, to protect the lives of hur ng children and refugees. At a me when the rich are ge ng richer and the poor are ge ng poorer, we insist the moral test of our society is how we treat and care for the weakest among us.

Detachment in poli cal conversa ons and par cipa-on means being open to the possibility that some-

one we disagree with at the start might be right, or that the whole truth might not lie in a single party’s or candidate’s pla orm. We approach others with the “Igna an Presupposi on” from the Spiritual Ex-ercises in mind — to be more ready to generously interpret another’s views than to jump to conclu-sions about bad intent, even if our disagreement with them is profound.

Detachment means trying to stand in the shoes of those who have very different opinions than we do and trying to understand their mo va ons, their worldview and their pain. It is only by le ng go of a achment to our own narrow perspec ve that we might be able to find the common ground which is the first step toward reconcilia on.

En momentos de creciente aisla-miento, recordamos a nuestra nación de su respon-sabilidad con el mundo, de buscar paz, de recibir inmigrantes, de proteger la vida de niños y refugia-dos. A un empo cuando los ricos se vuelven más ricos y los pobres más pobres, insis mos el test mo-ral de nuestra sociedad es como tratamos y cuida-mos a los más débiles entre nosotros.

Desapego en conversaciones y par cipación polí ca significa estar abiertos a la posibilidad que alguien con quien estamos en desacuerdo al principio, tenga razón., o que la verdad completa no esta con un so-lo par do o la plataforma de un candidato. Detachment from our own views should not dimin-ish our passion in working for jus ce, or in speaking out on issues that are close to our hearts — we seek to transform the world for the be er, which inevita-bly entails some conflict. But seeing all other people as beloved children of God, created in God’s image and likeness, requires us to treat all people with re-spect.

In this week’s gospel we learn that the great-est command is "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first com-mandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the proph-ets depend on these two commandments." Those parishioners and volunteers that work with Ignatian Services live these commandments. When working in the food pantry the families we serve are our main focus. When visiting a nursing home, it is the resi-dent being visited that is in the spotlight. We are your eyes and ears to see those in need and to hear the cries of the poor. The last seven months have been difficult, but we have continued serving those in need. We serve everyone who comes looking for help regardless of who they are or where their home is. Fall is always a busy time for Ignatian Services, and we expect this year to be even busier. Igna an Services Servicios Ignacianos En el Evangelio de esta semana nos dice que el mandamiento más importante es “Amaras al Se-ñor, tu Dios con todo corazón, y con toda tu mente. Este es el mas grande y primero de los mandamien-tos. Y el segundo es semejante a este: Amaras a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. Los voluntarios y feligre-ses que trabajan con Servicios Ignacianos viven es-tos mandamientos. Trabajando en la despensa las familias que ser servimos son el centro de nuestra atención. Visitando los hogares de ancianos, son sus residentes el centro de atención. Somos sus ojos y oídos que ven a los necesitados y escuchan el la-mento del pobre. Los últimos siete meses han sido difíciles, pero hemos continuado sirviendo a los ne-cesitados. Servimos a todos los que vienen pidiendo ayuda sin importar quienes son o donde viven. El otoño es siempre un tiempo de mucha actividad para Servicios Ignacianos, y esperamos que este será aun más.
