The Aberdeen Area Arts Council and the Aberdeen Recreation and Cultural Center will be hosting Thodos Dance Chicago for a three-day residency

November 14-16, 2016. During the three days, the company will be conducting community outreach which will include master classes for dance students, work with students in the schools, school performance and several other opportunities for the community to learn from the company. The residency will culminate with a public performance on Wednesday, November 16. Half of the performance will be a story ballet, A Light in the Dark. This ballet is the triumphant story of Helen Keller, a deaf and blind child, and the undying devotion of her gifted teacher Anne Sullivan. A story told many times, most memorably as The Miracle Worker, this may be the first time it has been told through the medium of dance. The dance puts committed teacher, Sullivan, herself seriously vision-impaired, at the work’s center, starting with the shunting of her and her also “damaged” brother as children to a filthy and deadly orphanage, and taking her through her own “miracle” at the Kellers’ residence. This presentation is supported by the Arts Midwest Touring Fund, a program of Arts Midwest that is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional contributions from the South Dakota State Arts Council and the Crane Group. BOYS & GIRLS HOCKEYThe Aberdeen Hockey Association (AHA) is dedicated to providing the opportunity for boys and girls, ages 5-19, to participate in ice hockey. The hockey program is designed to provide a graduated learning experience. Maximum participation for each child is designed into the program with special rules for games. AHA and Aberdeen are fortunate to have two sheets of indoor ice during the hockey season, which allows for additional convenience and flexibility in scheduling compared to many other associations.

The hockey season begins in November and ends in February. Schedules will be available after registration. Start and end times of the season will vary by level. AHA has equipment packages (including helmets, gloves, shin guards, elbow pads, and breezers) for the younger ages for a nominal rental fee. Other items can be rented from Dakota Outdoors or purchased from Dakota Outdoors or Dunham’s. Skating lessons through the Parks and Recreation Lesson Program will be provided for free for first time registrants and are available to all others that are interested. The Aberdeen Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department and the Aberdeen Sertoma Club are

excited about the new Family Gravity Coaster ride in Storybook Land. The ride runs on a 260 foot

steel track with six cars that accommodates up to 12 adults and children. The Family Coaster is

the perfect addition to add thrills for young and old alike. The new roller coaster has a Humpty

Dumpty Theme and a new wall has been constructed where Humpty Dumpty sits and a new picnic

plaza has also been constructed as a part of the project.

The Aberdeen Sertoma Club continues to accept donations for the project. The development of

Storybook Land and the Land of Oz has been made possible through the generous donations of

people like you. Please consider making a tax deductible contribution.
