On the CoverFeatured on the cover is the art from the Kids N’ Canvas art classes. It was Acrylic paint on canvas but, it can also be done on paper. Instructor Letty Nava begins her classes by showing children a sample. Then together, they draw the subject. Letty first paints as the children watch and explains what she is doing. Then, the students paint. They all paint the same subject but, the students get to add their own special touches to make it their own. For example, the sunflower featured was painted by student, Anna Weigel who is 12 years old. You can see she is starting to write her name on the stem of the flower.

The canvas classes are two hours, and the children leave with a completed masterpiece.

This coming semester Letty will be offering a Mixed Media class each month from January to April. The Mixed Media classes are one hour and they paint on paper. Letty provides samples for the kids to choose and they can paint a subject they like. Subjects they have painted in the past include animals such as giraffes and cats, and still life such as pears and flowers, landscapes and self portraits too, so there a bit of everything.

To see the classes taught by Letty Nava, please see the Art Section on page 8.

Peterson Park Urban Forest Project - 44 new trees planted this Winter!

The tree-lined street at Peterson Park is beautiful and shady, but over time the trees have proven to be unhealthy. As a result, the Parks Division has embarked on an Urban Forest Project to help improve the situation.

This last October, the Parks Division removed the majority of the Pear trees in Peterson Park. Thirty-nine trees were removed because they were dropping too many branches and were negatively impacting street lighting, street sweeping, and had the potential to be a safety hazzard. Tree defects include poor branch structure, dying branches, and wood rot. After all the trees were removed the stumps were ground and new sites were identified for the 44 new trees that will be planted in December.

Several park neighbors attended a community meeting with Park Superintendent, Steve Dutra, to learn about the project before it began. Additionally, park visitors can also learn about the project from a large 4-foot by 10-foot interperative sign that is currently on display at Peterson Park near the playground area.

Local nonprofit Tree Lodi has helped to make this project possible through the support of a $7,000 grant. This grant will pay for the tree removal, replacement, and provide three years of maintenance, all free to the City of Lodi.

December is a good time for tree planting because it gives the trees time to root well and go dormant and then have a nice push of new growth and bloom in the spring. Over the lifespan of the new trees, they will provide more shade than compared to the Pear trees. The list to the right are the types of trees that will be planted.

Neighbors and volunteers are invited to celebrate the completion of the Peterson Park Urban Forest Project on Arbor Day, April 11, 2015. Watch for more details.

NewsNewly planted 15 gallon trees include several

long-lived large stature shade species including:

Maple Acer Autumn Blaze

Black Tupelo

Pin Oak

Shumard Oak

Additional trees include:

Maple Acer October Glory

Pistacia Keith Davies

Magnolia Samuel Sommer

Columnar English Oak

NewsCommunity Partnerships:

Lowe’s and Lodi-Tokay Rotary lend helping handsThe Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Department (PRCS) is fortunate to have the support of community groups that are interested in service projects that will enhance the Lodi community, specifically parks and sports facilities. This past September we were fortunate enough to have two groups, Lowe’s employees and the Lodi-Tokay Rotary Club, come forward with the desire to donate their talents, time, and energy to projects that benefit users at Lodi Lake Park and the Grape Bowl.

Community groups looking for projects begin the process by working with Park Superintendent Steve Dutra to identify projects that fit with their budget and the number of people they have to offer. Working closely with staff is important to ensure that various building standards and codes are met because the public will be the end user of the completed project. Partnership with community groups are instrumental in helping PRCS Department projects that are unfunded become a reality, and we appreciate them and their ongoing support.

Lowe’s employees select Lodi Lake About 30 employees of the Lodi Lowe’s store spent a morning at Lodi Lake Park to repair, renovate and beautify the city’s most popular park. The employees, under guidance from the Parks Division, repaired chain-link fences, installed new backboards in the Williamson Youth Area horseshoe pits, performed some tree maintenance, and painted the north restroom, among other things. The value of their work and materials exceeded $25,000, with almost all of the materials donated by Lowe’s.

Lodi – Tokay Rotary Renovate Field House at Grape BowlThe Field House at the Grape Bowl is the latest piece to receive a renovation at the site. The Lodi-Tokay Rotary Club raised money and solicited donations of labor and materials worth $55,000 to renovate the 4,800-square-foot Field House, which is used by high school, youth and some adult football teams as locker room space during games and as a staging area prior to kick-off.

The club completely renovated the restrooms inside the Field House, with two new urinals and two new toilets for both teams. A new concrete floor was poured, and walls were repainted. Many other area Rotary clubs helped with the renovation, along with the Salvation Army, California Waste Recovery Systems, and the Boosters of Boys and Girls Sports. In addition, Kelly Moore Paints, Meehleis Modulars and Wally Case of Case Construction donated materials and labor to the project.

Strategic Plan UpdateOn September 24, about 75 members of the public attended focus group meetings and a workshop at Hutchins Street Square to gather public input for the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS) Strategic Plan. Meeting participants were also provided with a presentation that described the current demographics of Lodi, and how those will change in the future.

Strategic plans provide agencies with a “road map” for planning purposes for the next several years. Because they are based on the results of public participation, these road maps help determine projects and programs that will meet the growing needs of the community, and determine how to maximize use of its current facilities, and limited funding.

PROS Consulting, the consulting firm assisting with the strategic plan development, held six focus groups with about 45 community members, various interest groups, and city officials to gather their perspectives and ensure a well-rounded opinion of the PRCS Dept both internally and externally. Later that evening, about 30 members of the public attended a workshop to provide their views of how the city could meet their recreation needs. Comments included a need for more trails, additional access to the Mokelumne River and a community center in east Lodi.

Residents who did not have a chance to participate at the public meeting had a chance to take an online survey about how they use the parks, facilities, and programs, and their desired needs for the future. A mail survey, designed to get a scientifically based sample of Lodi residents, is also part of the information-gathering process. Residents can look for more information on the Strategic Plan and survey results when they are available later this year at www.lodiparksvision.com.

NewsHigh School Volunteers Make

Haunted House a SuccessThis year Hutchins Street Square held a Haunted House to the spook-tacular delight of the community. On, Halloween night 551 guests passed through the haunted house that was held in Thomas Theater. But the creation of the scariness was weeks in the making, thanks to the help of a dozen students from Liberty High School.

Liberty High School is a neighbor to Hutchins Street Square and in efforts to seek out volunteers and build collaboration with the school and its students; Liberty Art Instructor, Mr. Jordan and Mandi Dumlao, of the Square took on the task of coordinating the students to participate in the design and decoration, and participated in the event itself.

For several weeks leading up to the event, students walked over and spent their class periods working behind the scenes and then returned after school to continue with their work in the Haunted House. Many students received class credit and some just enjoyed the creative process. The students learned new skills in the art of prop building, working in collaboration with others, and learning about the activities held at the Square.

“The Liberty students are creative, smart, and passionate young people” says Billy Gonzalez the Building Services Supervisor at Hutchins Street Square who helped oversee the student’s work. “It was wonderful to see them motivated to produce a fun community event.”

Pictured Top: Frankenstein and his bride also helped make the night a scary success!

Bottom: Working behind the scenes in preparation for the event are students, Jessie who demonstrated a great talent for special effects make-up and Alex who was an excellent scary piano player.

Featured Lodi Lake Nature Area Docent - “Grandpa” Norm PageTurning 80 years old would probably slow most people down, unless of course you are Norm Page, or “Grandpa,” as most students on a Lodi Lake Nature Trail tour will fondly call him. He starts his tour with a welcome, and “you can call me Grandpa for the next two hours,” which sets the tone and wins his students instantly. They recognize someone who really loves kids, which is why Grandpa Norm volunteers as a Lodi Lake Docent. Most tours end with hugs and sweet memories for the kids and requests from teachers for Grandpa Norm the following year.

Grandpa Norm is a native of the Arkansas Ozark Mountains region and will charm his students with stories of pet possums and skunks, and if you are lucky, you will hear the story of the pet squirrel he drove across country with when he was 15 years old.

Norm has been married for 53 years to Ramona, who handles all his emails and schedules his tours. They are the parents of seven children, 19 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great 2-year-old grandchild. Their extended family lives in San Joaquin County, the Bay Area and Missouri.

NewsGrape Festival Winners from Hutchins Street Square

Watercolor ClassJean Janssen, watercolor instructor from Hutchins Street Square won two first place blue ribbons and her student Effie Komure, won two Honorable Mentions at the Lodi Grape Festival in September. There were several painting categories and each category had many entries. Read on about the artists and their paintings.

About the ArtistsJean Janssen prefers the traditional watercolor scenes of landscapes and florals. She also sketches and does a little acrylics but says she “just can’t make it (acrylics) sing,” and that watercolor painting is the hardest of the arts.

When not painting, she’s teaching. Jean has been the watercolors painting instructor at Hutchins Street Square for the last 10 years, and just started teaching with University of the Pacific’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute program. She has been an artist for 41 years and is largely self-taught. Her advice for new students: “prepare for a lot of failures, a lot of work and a lot of fun.”

She says she’s envious of new students just starting out, because learning how to paint is “just such magic.”

Jean is preparing for her next show in February -- Expressions Art Show in Tracy. She tries to enter every regional show while squeezing in time for painting. Her lifetime goal is to become a signature member of the prestigious American Watercolor Society.

About the PaintingsJean Jansen and paintings (L) Abstract 101 and (R) Reflections.

“Abstract 101” won first place in the mixed media category. It uses foreign objects and stamps. It was Jean’s first real attempt at a mixed media and she spent approximately five weeks on this completed piece. Her inspiration was just using her imagination.

“Reflections” is a traditional watercolor landscape and won first place. If you look closely, there is the reflection of a head in the water. Jean says the shape seemed to appear and “she just went with it” and thinks that’s what makes it unique and a winning painting. Right now she is in her “Koi Period,” and has several Koi paintings that have earned numerous awards.

About the Artists (continued)Effie Komure has been an art student with Jean for the last six years. She has been retired for about 10 years and travels from Sacramento every Thursday to pick up her mother so they can attend Jean’s class at Hutchins Street Square.

Effie grew up in Lodi and received her first encouragement to paint in the third grade. She was an art major at San Jose State University and to help pay for college expenses, she earned some money doing fashion illustrations. “The Lady in the Dress” painting reminds her of those college days. She went on to become an art teacher at Kennedy High School in the Sacramento area. After retirement, she gave herself a chance to do what she wanted to do. She always felt her strength was drawing but loves watercolors because “watercolors are so free,” says Effie.

Effie has been entering competitions for the last several years, and won a second-place award one year at the Grape Festival. “Effie has a good sense of color and shapes,” Instructor Jean Janssen says.

According to Effie, the class provides a supportive environment, is a good place to receive critiques, learn from one another, and provides the freedom to work on one’s individual projects.

When not painting, Effie is involved with her book club, aquatic aerobics, sings in a church choir, travels and is planning a trip to Japan in the spring. She hopes to take a picture of Japan’s famous cherry blossoms as the basis of a future painting. She currently is practicing using Japanese rice paper to add texture to her paintings.

About the PaintingsEffie Komure and paintings (L) Lady with a Flower Dress and (R) Man in Desert

“Lady with a Flower Dress” received an Honorable Mention. The painting uses Yupo paper that is made out of plastic. The color sits on top and the color stays true and doesn’t bleed. This painting took about six hours to complete.

“Man in Desert” received an Honorable Mention and is really titled “Jesus Walking in the Desert” but changed the title so it had more universal appeal at the show. Effie plans to donate it to her church. This painting took approximately six hours to complete.

Students have the opportunity to interact with kids their age and learn how to sing in a group. Once songs are learned, then students will perform them with choreography and movements.
