The Glenview Park District’s new Park and Facility Services East building recently won two top awards for outstanding de-sign. This new facility replaces the original building that was destroyed by fire in November 2010.

The building was recently named a Gold winner in the 2016 Association of Licensed Architects Design Awards Pro-gram at a reception Oct. 3. Out of 133 submissions, only five to six projects are named a Gold winners. This award is shared with Dewberry, the architect for the project, as well as the Frederick Quinn Corporation,

the construction manager. The building also received

the Outstanding Facility & Park Award from the Illinois Park & Recreation Associa-tion’s Awards and Recognition Program. The park district had the highest total points in this di-vision and category throughout the state of Illinois. This award recognizes public agencies for their exceptional and unique achievements in design and development. The Illinois Park and Recreation Association will present the awards at their busi-ness meeting Jan. 20.

“This facility was truly a collaboration between the park

district, board members, staff, residents, and the project team,” said James Warnstedt, superin-tendent of Park & Facility Ser-vices. “Because of its location within a neighborhood setting, design sensitivity and resident feedback was important to the process.”

The Park and Facility Ser-vices East building houses staff and resources that help keep the parks and facilities well-maintained for the community. This includes: plumbers and electricians, HVAC and pool maintenance staff, custodial staff, a carpentry shop and weld-ing shop.

The park district has not completed a comprehensive master plan since 1983. Park board commissioners inked a $172,400 contract with Hitchcock Design Group of Naperville to complete the plan.

At their Thursday, Dec. 15 park board meeting, Glenview commissioners discussed results of the first phase of the master planning process, an inventory of park district assets and compari-son at the state and national levels. They discussed the planned mailing of the park district needs survey. A full report on phase one of the comprehensive master plan is expected to be presented to park commissioners next month.

The Glenview Park District serves more than 50,000 residents with more than 30

parks and indoor facilities, including two golf courses, indoor and outdoor pools, a small lake, the Park Center facility which includes a fit-ness center, gyms and activity rooms, the Grove National Landmark, Wagner Farm, the Glenview Ice Center and many fieldhouses located in parks.

The park district is also conducting a separate needs assessment, site analysis, facility study and cost and constructability analysis for Glenview Ice Center. The ice center is located on Landwehr Road just north of Lake Avenue. Williams Architects of Itasca was contracted to conduct the ice center study for $85,000.

The ice center study has an expected completion date in late winter or early spring. Warnstedt said that study would be folded into the overall comprehensive master plan.
