A note from Jane: Dear Parents, Staff and Friends, Welcome to Park West Coop’s 2015 Gala: Passport to Paradise. It is wonderful that we can all be here to enjoy an evening together, celebrating and supporting Park West. As you may know, I attended my first Park West Gala in 1982 as a parent and have been to most of them since that time. I’ve enjoyed them all. My four and a half years as a parent at Park West - assisting in the classroom with teachers, working on committees with other parents, and serving on our Board of Directors - had an impact on my life and the life of my family that I couldn’t have predicted all those years ago. Being an assisting parent at school made me a better parent at home. I learned so much from teachers about how to speak with children and how to acknowledge feelings but still maintain a limit. They gave me a better understanding of how children think and learn, as well as a new kind of road map on parenting. I will be forever grateful. At Park West Coop, I found a loving community of parents and teachers, committed to working together to create a school that took children and their ideas seriously. As you look around the room tonight, you can see that community still thriving. It is here as we joke and dance together - and bid on those special items to support school. Community is in the classroom, abuzz with the ideas of children percolating, and teachers listening and stretching those ideas. Community is at the school door every morning and afternoon with the arrival of the children. And yes, community is in all those committee and board meetings as we work together with pride and love for our home here at Park West Coop.

It is important to remember that this lovely event does not just happen. It is a reflection of the thought, planning, work and love that our Special Events Chairs have put into tonight’s party. Cassidy Neveux, Anne Mansfield and Anne Zaug have been working on this evening since last spring when they agreed to co-chair our Special Events Committee. I have been amazed by their creative ideas, work ethic, grace and good cheer. With the support of their committee, as well as all of you, they have given us this special evening. Thank all of you for being part of the Park West Family. We all get very close during our days here. We rely on each other. We respect each other. We enjoy being with each other. Every year our Park West Family grows, as our alumni stay in close contact, and that is very meaningful to me. Please enjoy yourself tonight, at this celebratory event, in this lovely venue, in the company of friends. And let’s all bid, bid, bid to support our dear Park West Coop! jane

Where to begin? Probably with our husbands, if we’re smart. Thank you to Eric, Shawn and Tim for all of your support, which you demonstrated in a multitude of ways: Not judging us when we began ranting like crazed lunatics; allowing your house to be overrun with auction items, decorations, alcohol, jelly bracelets, etc.; taking charge of the kids so we could pour ourselves into our new “part-time job”; building, and drawing, and adding, and, well, there’s only so much space on this page. To our sitters: Thank you for being flexible and caring for our children while we planned this fabulous (we hope that’s the consensus) and important evening. Though at least one of our children (we won’t name names) likes you “just one more number better,” it’s a small price to pay for knowing they were loved and entertained during our absence. We know someday they’ll appreciate all of our hard work! Jane, thank you for always cheering us on and making us feel like we were ahead of the ball, even when we weren’t. You put a lot of faith in us, which feels good coming from someone so wise! We couldn’t ask for a better leader, motivator and friend. Nada and Isaac, thank you for allowing us to overrun the office, library and anywhere else we saw fit over the past year. You didn’t bat an eye when we kicked you off of your own computer and were always willing to give us the pen out of your hand. To Joseph and Amanda: We thought for sure you’d put in for a transfer. Two years in a row with our rascals?! Thank you for playing such an important role during their formative years – whether that role be gentle instruction or serving as a repeated target during foam block throwing in the gym.

Kristen, Melinda, and Sarah: We regularly invoke your calming influence in trying times at home. Thank you for your patience and genuine love for our children. And to all of the teachers at Park West: You are the foundation that makes this school such a special place. Thank you for helping our children learn and grow and for making us better parents through demonstration. You’re truly amazing! Finally, thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make this night a success. Members of the Special Events Committee: You so willingly donated your time and talents, with many of you going above and beyond the call of duty this year. It did not go unnoticed. Beginning at 8:00 p.m., please join us in the back room of the gallery to hear a quick “welcome” from Jane before we launch into Heads-or-Tails. Everyone with a jelly bracelet has a chance to win!

How the game works: Greg, our auctioneer, will instruct everyone to choose “heads” or “tails” by placing your hands on either your head or bottom. Then Jane will flip a coin. If you chose correctly, you move onto the next round; if not, you toss one of your bracelets to the ground. As long as you have bracelets remaining, you keep playing. The last person with a bracelet wins, so the more bracelets you have, the better your odds! We recommend a donation of $5 for one additional bracelet or $20 for five bracelets. Find your friendly Special Events Committee member wearing a pink fanny pack to collect as many as you’d like. Remember: Stacking bracelets is very fashion forward, people.
