When o r i g i n a l l y cons t ruc ted i n 1845, t h e Stone Mansion s tood on a f o u r a c r e farm ( o r i g i n a l l y owned by prominent West Vi rg in i an Spicer P a t r i c k ) f ac ing what w a s then t h e o l d Kanawha River Turnpike near where t h e "Parkersburg Road" joined t h e tu rnp ike . Within a decade of i t s cons t ruc t ion , t h e farm had grown from f o u r t o a thousand a c r e s due t o t h e indus t ry of i t s s e c o n d owner, Adam B.D. L i t t l e p a g e , and supported numerous barns and outbui ld ings .

The Stone Mansion of 1845 w a s a Ewo-story Federa l s t y l e residence. Con- s t r u c t e d by b u i l d e r s Harrop L. Joy and J. Carson, t h e res idence was (and i s ) r e c t a n g u l a r i n con f igu ra t ion , having f i v e bays a t f r o n t and r e a r e l eva t ions , b u i l t of massive sandstone masonry blocks. The foundat ion i s sandstone, and t h e s t o n e s a t t h e bottom course of t h e bui ld ing a r e 18" high, weighing, i n es t imat ion , w e l l ove r a ton. The s t o n e s graduate as they rise u n t i l they a r e 8" i n t h e gables . The s t o n e b locks themselves a r e smooth a s h l a r , and r e p r e s e n t what is probably t h e most s t r i k i n g a r c h i t e c t u r a l a s p e c t of t h e mansion: i t s supurb masonry cons t ruc t ion . A l l h o r i z o n t a l j o i n t s a r e l e v e l , and t h e bui ld ing i s covered by a gab le sh ing le roof . The f r o n t entrariceway is framed by a s e m i - e l l i p t i c a l f a n l i g h t and s i d e l i g h t s . Both t h e f r o n t acd r e a r en t r ances have one s t o r y columned, gabled p o r t i c o s , c l a s s i c a l i n des ign , t h a t c o n t a i n t r i a n g u l a r s tone pediments and a r e supported by p l a i n s h a f t s t o n e Doric columns. These p o r t i c o s , as we l l as t h e porch on t h e e a s t end of t h e r e s idence (now enclosad), w e r e added around 1915.

The i n t e r i o r of t h e Stone Mansion was o r i g i n a l l y a b a s i c f e d e r a l des ign; t h e f i r s t f l o o r c o n s i s t e d of fou r l a r g e , h igh c e i l i n g e d rooms surrounding a c e n t r a l hal lway aid s t a i r c a s e .

The s t a i rway i s of p a r t i c u l a r no te . It rises a t t h e l e f t c e n t e r of t h e c e n t r a l h a l l and g r a c e f u l l y t u r n s a t t he ha l f s t o r y l e v e l and rises t o t h e second f l o o r . The 0p2ii s t r i n g s tair is decora tsd wi th a moulded ra i l , p l a i n square sp ind le s , and a s e r i e s of wave p a t t e r n bracke ts . The s t a i rway i s i n n e a r - o r i g i n a l condi t ion .

The second f l o o r i s of t h e same b a s i c des ign a s t h e f i r s t : f o u r l a r g e rooms, a l l o r i g i n a l l y used as bedrooms, open onto a c e n t r a l h a l l . There i s a f u l l a t t i c above t h e second f l o o r .

P a i r e d end chimneys a t both ends of t h e mansion a r e another prominent f e a t u r e , and were designed s o t h a t each of t h e mansion's e i g h t rooms had its own f i r e p l a c e .

O r i g i n a l l y , t h e k i t chen w a s s e p a r a t e though ad jacen t from t h e main r e s i d e n c e and a water w e l l s tood o u t s i d e t h e k i t chen door. Both t h e w e l l and k i t c h e n were f u l l y enclosed and added t o the. main r e s idence as a " w e s t wing" i n 1936.

w a s enclosed f o r o f f i c e space i n t he Spring of 1969. However, t h e enc losure was c o n s t r u c t e d of s t o n e t h a t matches the o r i g i n a l s t o n e t o some ex ten t and harmonizes w i t h t h e main s t r u c t u r e .

By 1932, t h e o r i g i n a l one thousand a c r e farm of Adam B.D. L i t t l e p a g e had been reduced, by va r ious pe r iod ic s a l e s , t o e i g h t and three-quarter a c r e s t h a t c o n s i s t e d o f t h e main house, f i n e l y manicured lawn, formal c l a s s i c a l gardens, s t o n e m i l k house and a barn. This acreage was f u r t h e r reduced t o a s i n g l e c i t y l o t by t h e c o n s t r u c t i o n , ad j acen t t o t h e mansion, of t h e L i t t l e p a g e Terrace housing p r o j e c t , begun i n 1939, during which time t h e gardens, milkhouse and barn were destroyed.

Today t h e Stone Mansion is f ron ted by Washington S t r e e t , West and ?bordered o n the e a s t by Rebecca S t r e e t (named f o r Rebecca Wood L i t t l e p a g e ) . S t a t e Route 21 ( t h e o l d Parkersburg Road) i n t e r s e c t s w i th Washington S t r e e t nearby.

Though t h e environmental s e t t i n g of t h e house has changed r a d i c a l l y s i n c e t h e an tebe l lum days of t h e 1 9 t h century , t h e L i t t l e p a g e Stone Mansion r e t a i n s i t s e legance of f e e l i n g and i ts sense of the h i s t o r y of t h e Great Kanawha Valley.

The L i t t l e p a g e Stone Mansion, cons t ruc t ed i n 1845, i s one of on ly six houses w i t h i n t h e C i t y of Charleston, West V i r g i n i a ' s C a p i t a l and l a r g e s t c i t y , t h a t d a t e t o b e f o r e t h e American C i v i l War, t h a t g r e a t cataclysm which gave b i r t h t o t h e s t a t e of West V i rg in i a . The o t h e r f i v e ; (Holly Grove, 1815; Col. Henry H. Wood House, 1829-31; "Glenwood", 1852; The MacFarland House, 1836, and "Cedar Grove", 1834.) are a l l l i s t e d on t h e Nat iona l Regis te r of H i s t o r i c P laces . B u i l t i n 1845 t h e s tone man- s i o n was cons t ruc t ed by l o c a l b u i l d e r s Harrop L. Joy and 3 . Carson, whose names a r e carved on b locks a t bo th gab le ends of t h e house, f o r Xajor Robert Thornton. The house was s o l d i n 1848 by Thornton t o Adam Brown Dickinson L i t t l epage , i n whose fami ly i t remained u n t i l 1932.

2. As c i v i l c o n f l i c t erupted i n 1861, t h e government of V i rg in i a adjudged i t of primary inpor t ance t h a t t h e Great Kanawha Val ley be held f o r t h e Confederacy. Accordi.ngly, Br igad ie r General Henry A. Wise (a former governor o f Virg in i a ) a r r i v e d a t Char l e s ton w i t h h i s 'Wise's Legion" on June 26, 1861, and immediately prepared t o e s t a b l i s h h i s headquar te rs and encampment a t t h e E i t t l e p a g e House and farm. The g e n e r a l was r e fused admit tance t o t h e house by Mrs. L i t t l e p a g e , Mrl L i t t l e p a g e (according t o '-,he more widely accpted of two v e r s i o n s of t h e s t o r y ) l being a l r e a d y away, having e n l i s t e d i n t h e Confederate army. General Wise threa tened t o have t h e hcuse "blown down over your head." V f s . Lltt lapage ramimd d e f i a n t a2d s tood i n t h e doorway of h e r house, surrounded by he r six young ch i ld ren . Though ordered by General Wise t o f i r e upon t h e house, h i s s o l d i e r s s t e a d f a s t l y refused.* Although thus stymied i n h i s a t t empt t o u s e t h e house a s h i s headquar te rs , the-General d id s e t up camp .on t h e L i t t l e p a g e Farm, and e s t a b l i s h e d a f o r t i f i e d encampment on t h e h i l l overlooking t h e house, as t h i s h i l l commanded t h e junc t ion of t h e Parkersburg Road and Kanawha River Turnpike. General Wise maintained h i s camp h e r e dur ing t h e Battle of Scary Creek ( Ju ly 17, 1861). Although t h a t b a t t l e was a Confederate v i c t o r y , Wise withdrew from t h e L i t t l e p a g e p rope r ty and from Charleston on J u l y 24, 1861. Although t h e Confederate occupat ion had l a s t e d only a month, t h e L i t t l e p a g e proper ty was devas ta ted by t h e occupatio:

All of t h e fenc ing and outbui ld ings were dismantled and used by t h e t roops f o r f i r e - wood, and a l l t h e farm's l i v e s t o c k was e i t h e r consumed o r conf i sca ted by t h e s o l d i e r s .

To make m a t t e r s worse,Lieutenant Adam Brown Dickinson L i t t l e p a g e was k i l l e d i n A p r i l of 1862 a t Dublin, Vi rg in ia whi le i n Confederate s e rv i ce . This l e f t Rebecca Wood L i t t l a p a g e a young widow with seven c h i l d r e n ( t h e l a s t , Alber ta , having been born i n January , 1862.) Due t o t hese circumstances, she was forced t o s e l l l a r g e s e c t i o n s of t h e farm t o pay taxes and suppor t h e r family.

The L i t t l e p a g e Mansion was a l s o t h e v i c t i m of misd i rec ted bombardment by Union f o r c e s i n 1862. While t he house sus t a ined only minor damage, i t w a s ano the r t r auma t i c event i n a long s e r i e s t h a t t h e L i t t l e p a g e family endured, a l l as a d i r e c t r e s u l t of t h e American C i v i l War.

3. The L i t t l e p a g e Family, who owned and l i v e d i n t h e Stone Mansion from 1848 u n t i l 1932, i s a fami ly whose members have played h igh ly s i g n i f i c a n t r o l e s i n t h e po l i - t i c a l , s o c i a l , and economic l i f e of both Kanawha County and West Vi rg in ia .

Adam Brown Dickinson L i t t l e p a g e (1818-1862), t h e founder of the f a m i l i e s " for tunes" and f i r s t L i t t l e p a g e owner of t h e s t o n e mansion, was heavi ly involved i n t h e s a l t i n d u s t r y i n pre-Civi l War Kanawha County, then t h e a r e a ' s most important bus ines s i n t e r e s t . He manufactured hogsheads ( b a r r e l s ) f o r t h e s a l t - i n d u s t r y , a s w e l l a s being involved i n t imbering and ope ra t ing a genera l s t o r e . Having purchased t h e s t o n e mansion i n 1848, by 1861 he owned two thousand a c r e s i n t h e immediate area. Despi te h i s a g e (43) he e n l i s t e d i n t h e Confederate s e r v i c e a t t h e outbreak of t h e C i v i l War and was k i l l e d i n Dublin, Vi rg in ia i n 1862 wh i l e s e rv ing a s a Lieu tenant .

Adam B. D. L i t t l e p a g e ' s marr iage i n 1845 wi th Rebecca Tendael Wood produced seven c h i l d r e n ; John William, Mary Frances, Char les F r a z i e r , Alexander Bonaparte, Samuel Dickinson, Adam Brown, and Alberta Rebecca; t h e l a s t namedwas never seen by he r f a t h e r . Despi te be ing deprived of t h e i r f a t h e r e a r l y i n l i f e and t h e hardships .

occasioned by t h e C i v i l War, a l l of t h e c h i l d r e n of Adam and Rebecca L i t t l e p a g e made some mark upon t h e h i s t o r y of t h e Kanawha Valley.

John William L i t t l e p a g e (1648-1900) became c a p t a i n of t h e M i s s i s s i p p i River steamboat "Mary", a w e l l known sternwheeler of i t s day ( sub jec t of t h e popular b a l l a d "Proud Mary"). He a l s o served f o r a time a s s t r e e t commissioner of Char les ton .

Mary Frances L i t t l e p a g e (1850-1892) became t h e wi fe of prominent Char les tonian George Bennet t .

Char les F r a z i e r L i t t l e p a g e (1852-1933) had a s o l i d ca ree r a s a n engineer , p a r t i c i p a t i n g i n t h e bu i ld ing of t he Kanawha River Locks & Dams system i n t h e 1880's and t h e Yorktown Monument a t Yorktown, V i r g i n i a , be fo re becoming a prominent Char les ton a t t o r n e y i n t h e e a r l y 20th century.

Alexander Bonaparte L i t t l e p a g e (1854-1928) became a very prominent Char les ton phys i c i an and f o r many yea r s had h i s medical o f f i c e i n p a r t of t h e s t o n e mansion.

Samuel Dickinson L i t t l e p a g e (1856-1917) w a s a very we l l known and i n f l u e n t i a l a t t o r n e y i n Kanawha County. I n 1912 Samuel Dickinson L i t t l e p a g e w a s e l e c t e d C i r c u i t Judge i n Kanawha County f o r t h e 1913-1921 term. Judge L i t t l e p a g e d ied a t t h e S tone Mansion (of which he was then owner) i n 1917.

Adam Brown L i t t l e p a g e (1859-1921) w a s probabiy t h e most we l l known of t h e L i t t l e p a g e Family. A prominent Char les ton a t t o r n e y , f a i l e d of e l e c t i o n a s Kanawha County Prosecut ing Attorney i n 1904 by a mere 47 vo te s .3 I n 1906 he w a s e l e c t e d t o t h e West V i r g i n i a Senate , s e rv ing 1907-1911. I n 1908 he was t h e Democratic nominee f o r Sec re t a ry of S t a t e of West Vi rg in i a . I n 1910 Adam B. L i tk lepage was e l e c t e d t o t h e 1J.S. House of Representa t ives , se rv ing i n t h e 62nd Congress i n 1914 and r e -e l ec t ed t o a t h i r d term i n 1916. Defeated f o r a f o u r t h congress iona l term i n 1918 by Leonard S. ~ c h o l s ~ , Adam L i t t l e p a g e re turned t o Char les ton a t t h e c l o s e of h i s term i n 1919 and, t h e same yea r , was t h e Democratic nominee f o r Mayor of Charleston, l o s i n g i n a c l o s e r a c e t o Republican Grant P. Hal l . Adam B. L i t t l e p a g e died June 29, 1921.5

Albe r t a Rebecca L i t t l e p a g e (1862-1955) marr ied G. Mosley Putney, a prominent Kanawha Val ley merchant. She l i v e d a long and respec ted l i f e a s one of Cha r l e s ton ' s "grand dames" and d i ed a t the age of 93, t h e l a s t of t h e c h i l d r e n of Adam B.D. L i t t l e p a g e and Rebecca Wood L i t t l e p a g e .

The Stone Mansion was inher i ted , i n 1917-18, by B u r r e l l Kemp L i t t l e p a g e , t h e only son of Judge Samuel L i t t l epage . A one t ime prosecut ing a t t o r n e y of Kanawha County, B. Kemp L i t t l e p a g e was a prominent a t t o r n e y i n Charleston u n t i l h i s unt imely d e a t h a t t h e mansion on Apr i l 24, 1928.

Four y e a r s l a t e r (1932), i n t h e mids t of t h e Great Depression, Mrs. Madge L i t t l e p a g e and h e r t h r e e sons l o s t t h e p rope r ty t o t h e Charleston Nat iona l Bank due t o a n $8,500. l i e n . I n such a manner d id t h e L i t t l e p a g e family,which con t r ibu ted s o much t o t h e development of Charleston, l o s e t h e i r homeplace a f t e r nea r ly a cen tu ry ' s resi- dence. 6

The house is cons t ruc ted of c u t sandstone blocks, qua r r i ed l o c a l l y , t h a t are of near-massive propor t ions , some weighing a s much a s 2+ tons. The names of t h e b u i l d e r s of t h e mansion, Harrop L. Joy and J. Carson appear , w i th t h e d a t e (1845) on two i d e n t i c a l blocks placed i n each gab le end above t h e a t t i c windows.

I n 1939 t h e bank so ld t h e bu i ld ing f o r $75,000. t o t h e Housing Author i ty of Char les ton , who converted t h e Mansion f o r use a s i t s headquarters f o r t h e new housing p r o j e c t begun near t h e proper ty i n 1937. This p r o j e c t , designed a s one of West V i r g i n i a ' s f i r s t low income publ ic housing p r o j e c t s , w a s named "L i t t l epage Terrace" i n honor of t h e L i t t l e p a g e Family. The L i t t l epageTer race Housing P r o j e c t became a glowing success and an example f o r o the r such p r o j e c t s t o fol low. The L i t t l e p a g e Stone Mansion cont inues , a s of this w r i t i n g (1982), t o s e r v e a s t h e mana- g e r i a l headquar te rs f o r L i t t l e p a g e Terrace.
