Have Old Tennis Balls? You hung your favorite sweater on a closet hook & now it has
a noticeable “bump” in the collar. Prevent future fashion woes
with a tennis ball. What to do: Use a box cutter to cut a 1” tall X into
a tennis ball. Hole the fall with the X facing the hook & push the ball
onto the hook. The rounded surface of the ball prevents hooks from
stretching or poking delicate or thin fabrics.

TWO UP
The team that controls the net controls the point, provided both play-
ers are comfortable up close to the net.
Tip 1: If you & your partner are both at the net, hitting a low ball down
the middle will confuse your opponents & force a weak reply, one
you can attack. Tip 2: If you hit a hard volley right at your opponent’s
midsection, he/she will be forced to play defensively & pop up a short
volley that your or your partner can attack.
TWO BACK
The two-up formation works best at the higher level, but here are 3
scenarios where the two back might be your team’s best strategy:
Tip 1: When your opponents have won the race to the net & taken
control of the point. Tip 2: If your opponents are excellent serve &
volleyers– the returner’s net partner can drop back to the baseline
for the first serve. Tip 3: If you and your partner have extremely
strong groundstroke's and weak net games.

8 STEPS TO SUCCEED IN THE HEAT
1. Physically Prepare– The more physically fit the player is, the less likely they will experience
heat-related issues.
2. Drink, Drink, Drink– Drink consistently, not just when thirsty. Drinking a combination of wa-
ter & electrolyte-enhanced beverages throughout the day will help with hydration. The body
may be 2% dehydrated by the time thirst is experienced.
3. Increase Salt Content in Food & Drink— As salt is the major electrolyte lost in sweat, it is es-
sential to replace this important electrolyte throughout the day. Foods that contain high salt
content include vegetable juice, canned soups & sports drinks.
4. Clothing—It is best to choose light-colored, breathable & loosely woven fabrics to help
sweat evaporate easily.
5. Acclimation—It is important to get the body adapted to a hot environment. Most occurrences
of heat illness take place in the first 2-3 days of training/playing in a hot and humid environ-
ment.
6. Applying liberal amounts of sunscreen will help prevent sunburn that increases an athlete’s
skin temperature. Reduce contact with direct sunlight when not playing.
7. Use Ice & Other Cooling Mechanisms—Keeping the body cool before, during & after practice
or competition is helpful in maintaining an appropriate body temperature. Putting ice directly
on muscles & joints during play is not advised due to possibility of muscle & joint stiffening.
8. Appropriate fuel before, during and after practice or a match.

1. Leg strength through hundreds of starts and
stops that build strong leg muscles.
2. Agility by forcing you to chance direction as
many as 5 times in 10 seconds during a typical
point.
3. Hand-eye coordination because you constantly
judge the timing between the oncoming ball &
the proper contact point.
