The Park and Recreation Facility Manager Certificate Program, is the only program of its type in the nation. The program is based on 10 years of field-tested, research-based, competency based, and rigorously taught National Park Service (NPS) courses for facility managers. Focus-ing on long-term stewardship, green park sustainability, and clear operations planning for asset management, this program enables agencies to steward facilities and parks for the long term; to understand the asset portfolio need for effective budget planning; and to better align overall agency goals and park and facility needs with community expectations.

The Certificate in Park and Recreation Facility Management is a professional development opportunity for individuals who see things differently. The program integrates the successful approaches of the NPS and major hotel chains for local and state agencies. In fact, this certifi-cate program uses the same nationally acclaimed curriculum found in the NPS Facility Manager Leaders Program (FMLP) taught by the Eppley Institute at Indiana University, a W. Edwards Dem-ing national award-winning program that has helped over 85% of its graduates gain promotion.

The Certificate in Park and Recreation Facility Management is a two-year course of study that will build skills in park, facility, and asset management, leadership, and team management. After graduating from the program, the professional holding this certificate will be able to:

• Implement effective lifecycle asset management as it applies to park and recreation facilities, while gaining an understanding of the total cost of facility ownership.

• Lead work groups and teams that will adapt asset management approaches such as facility condition index, priority index, and asset management planning in an agency.

• Improve park and recreation facility management for their agencies by leading strategic change that affects maintenance and operation policy approaches.

• Establish a road map for their professional future and continuous improvement.

Agencies that send employees to this program will benefit from tested management practices that will be applied to their facilities. Additionally, the program’s capstone project, in which par-ticipants apply what they learned in a practical setting, results in a work product that will directly benefit the learner’s workplace.

Who Should Attend?State and local park and public lands agency employees and non-profit organization managers who want to lead real change in the care and management of agency assets – the parks and facilities of the agency.

A New Approach: Blended Learning Students attend two short classroom-based weeks, one week in Year 1 and a second week in Year 2. A year of online learning activities is provided between Year 1 and Year 2. It’s easy to see how this ap-proach benefits students. Online learning reinforces and builds on the active learning from the Year 1 and Year 2 classroom weeks, but students spend less time away from home and work. Online learning sessions also allow students to put what they learned into practice in their organizations, producing proj-ects that will carry their professional development forward and help their park organizations.

This program takes a blended learning approach to instruction, combining in-class sessions with e-courses and webinars throughout its two years.

Program ScheduleThe certificate program will begin with a workshop co-located with the award-winning Great Lakes Park Training Institute in February 2014. During this classroom-based workshop, you will be en-gaged in sessions designed to introduce key concepts and identify new applications of business practices to park and recreation facilities while you gain opportunities to learn with a group of fellow parks and public lands professionals.

After these initial classroom sessions at the Great Lakes Park Training Institute, learners will be en-gaged in online learning via e-courses, forums, webinars, and developmental activities. The topics presented during this period will build on what you learned at the Institute and will culminate with an assignment in which you put what you learned into action for your agency or organization.

The second year of the certificate program will begin with preliminary assignments that will prepare you for the classroom experience at the 2015 Great Lakes Park Training Institute. The second year at the Institute will feature sessions that delve deeper into the certificate program’s professional competencies. The second year of online learning will focus on developing a cap-stone project that will benefit your park agency or district. Finally, this program will leave you with a road map for advancing your career as you receive your certificate in Park and Recreation Facil-ity Management.

Earning Your CertificateIn order to complete the certificate program, you will need to:

• • Attend and fully participate in all classroom sessions at the Great Lakes Park Training Institute • • Complete all requisite e-courses, forums, and webinars • • Pass all required participation, assignments, and capstone projects
