Every place has a story.

Maybe it is the unusual manner in which the community was settled. Perhaps it is found in the natural or physical attributes of the location. It could be unique aspects of its business and community development. Most certainly, the people associated with a place over time provide special perspective to a community’s character and personality.

Gaining insights to the unique attributes of a community enriches its residents and visitors with its special ‘sense of place’ in the state, country, and in the world.

Greeley has exceptional qualities that bear sharing and to help in that regard, the City has launched a program called the “G.Town Tours” to help acquaint community members and visitors with parts of the community that may not be as well known but which offer sparks of community enlightenment once revealed.

Tours are generally scheduled for the first Friday morning of each month and will vary between different themes throughout the year, including:

Historic Faces & Places

Greeley’s Creative District

Natural Places & Open Spaces

Business Around Town

City Hall Crawl & More

Greeley Unexpected

On this GREELEY UNEXPECTED tour, six stops will help highlight some of the distinctive and surprising finds in Greeley.

G.Town Tours

“Greeley Unexpected” is a City initiative to rebuff tired, old, and often untrue stereotypes about the community by promoting stories about the “real Greeley” to residents, visitors, and outsiders. This tour highlights just a few of the unique local offerings that are found only in Greeley. While there are many special places to pick from the G.Town Tour will include stops at just six spots that offer a wide range of live, work, play offerings.

A tortilla manufacturing facility

A world renown model railroad museum

A local clay center and community garden

A monster-making operation

A high-end Downtown Loft

A theatre that you can eat dinner during the movie

A stop at a local bakery

We hope you’ll be surprised and delighted with these Greeley originals.

Los Comales Tortilla Factory (104 N. 11th Ave.)

This site was formerly a small neighborhood grocery store known as “Stoll’s Market” , and later became the home of the Weld County Food Bank.

When it became vacant, the property was acquired by the Greeley Urban Renewal Authority (GURA) in April 2004 for cash and land as a swap with Weld County.

The site is in an area designated by the City as the “Mercado District” in which voluntary guidelines are suggested to promote the areas redevelopment with a more cohesive southwest style of architecture.

A ‘Request for Proposals’ was issued by GURA in July 2005 for the redevelopment of the property; the proposal submitted by Los Comales in September was accepted and work began on a development agreement for the site’s re-use conditioned on certain site upgrades and improvements.

The property was sold to Gerardo Lucero in Fall of 2005 for construction of tortilla factory; construction started in May of 2006 and completed in October of 2006.

Mr. Lucero has 50 employees involved in the making and distributing of the food products.

Los Comales produces 18,200 corn tortillas and 10,800 flour tortillas each weekday and 52,000 corn tortillas on Saturday and Sunday.

The product is distributed to small independent stores from Denver north all the way to Cheyenne Wyo-ming, almost every Mexican restaurant you can name, including local eateries such as Palominos, Coyote’s, small independent restaurants, the various lunch wagons, Save-a-Lot markets and such.

Los Comales has been in business in Greeley for 14 years. In addition to this tortilla factory, Mr. Lucero also has the bakery at 9th and 14th and the small restaurant in the Jerry’s Market building on 14th Avenue and 5th Street.

Colorado Model Railroad at the Greeley Freight Station Museum (680 10th Street)

This private clay center offers pottery classes starting at the beginning of every month for beginners and advanced students.

Custom classes are available for groups, team building, ladies night out, home schoolers , etc.

The property also includes a community garden site available to area residents.

The Clay Center was tapped to provide a unique ‘coin’ souvenir as part of the Greeley Unexpected image campaign.

The Train Museum is located by the mainline of the Union Pacific Railroad

This one-of-a-kind facility features over 600 railroad-related artifacts

Designed to appeal to visitors of all ages and nationalities, the GFSM has set record attendance marks in its first two years of operation and has become the leading year-round tourist attraction in Weld County, Colorado, attracting visitors from around the world.

The highlight of the museum is its huge, 5,500 sq. ft. operating miniature railroad dubbed "the finest model railroad I’ve ever seen", by the 30-year senior editor of Model Railroader magazine, Jim Hediger, Milwaukee, WI.

Visitors may actually stroll through this three dimensional creation while the railroad is in operation, surrounded by rugged mountains with handmade features including 16,000 fir, 8,000 deciduous and 4,000 aspen trees. Rivers abound and scenery becomes three dimensional art.

The use of cameras is encouraged and guides are available to answer railroad-related questions and to point out unique aspects of this one-of-a-kind modeling wonder.

The set is so realistic, callers have actually inquired about booking a ride on the railroad!

Visual tours are also available via the GFSM website.

Downtown Residential Lofts 4

4 Distortions (517 13th Street)

Since 1978, Distortion’s owners, Ed and Marsh Edmunds have been a mainstay of the dark amusement industry with their manufacture of quality props, masks. and creatures.

The creative work of these enterprising artists is featured on the Travel Channel series Making Monsters.

Distortions’ creatures have been featured in several notable Hollywood Sci-fi movies.

The Company can customize their props and animatronics if requested to produce a character in a particular way or painted differently, offering a ‘full service’ monster making operation.

Above the new retail shops in Downtown Greeley one can find an astonishing variety of Incredible loft condos that feature beautiful brick walls and wood floors, gourmet kitchen, granite, stainless steel appliances, 5-burner gas stove top, Murphy bed, wood floors, and gas fireplace.

The Kress Theater (817 8th Avenue)

The Kress Cinema & Lounge is not only Greeley’s first independent movie theater, but also a full-service bar and restaurant.

Located in historic Downtown, the theater takes advantage of the high, deco-rative plaster ceilings to create a large viewing space with historic ambiance. Customers are able to dine and enjoy beverages – both alcoholic and non – while watching a movie.

Film programming is diverse – with classic, cult, and alternative content in addition to mainstream movies.

A surprise find below the sidewalk is an enchanting bakery that invites visitors “to experience the artistry and passion of our pastry chefs and enjoy the wide variety of taste sensations that we delight in preparing for you each day”.

The small hole-in-the-wall bakery specializes in designing custom desserts and

other bakery items.
