Interim Moderator

Continued overleaf

Dear friends,

I would firstly like to say a very big thank you to Gordon Morrison and to many of you for your very warm welcome to myself and also to my wife Maggie, since we have recently joined again the St Mary’s church family. I look back 19 years with fond memories to 2000-1 when I served as your Locum Minister for 7 months, following the retirement of the Rev. Frank Haughton and prior to the arrival of Rev. Mark Johnstone, your most recent Minister. Where does the time go? It is so true to say that ‘God works in a mysterious way’. When I said goodbye to you all as I moved to Barrhead South and Levern Parish Church to begin full time Parish Ministry, I never thought for a minute that I would ever enjoy being back at St. Mary’s so many years later, especially being retired and again as your Locum Minister. It is a joy and privilege to again serve you as you enter this interim time before you call your next Minister. My previous and final Charge (following Barrhead South and Levern) was on the Costa del Sol in Spain. We lived and ministered in a city called Fuengirola that was about thirty minutes drive south from Malaga airport. Due to an unexpected family illness, discovered on a visit back to Glasgow, meant that I couldn’t return to Spain to continue my job as Minister. Returning to Scotland was quite a big shock, transition of culture and climate for us. It was made much easier, however, as we were able to

move back to our own home in the west end of Glasgow that also was a 10 minute walk from the Beatson Cancer Hospital. With the intrusion of illness into our lives and the subsequent life changes it brought, left us asking many questions. It was in these moments when we did not know WHY that encouraged us to step our journey of faith up a gear and increase our trust in God our Heavenly Father, resting on the truth, that HE KNEW WHY! As our Great Shepherd, we took much comfort and strength from the knowledge that our LORD was with us, always guiding and leading us for our blessing in His perfect way. During this time, Maggie and I learned some big lessons of faith primarily that our job, in the midst of uncertainty, was to trust Him, seek His face and be comforted by the knowledge that ‘in ALL things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose’ (Romans 8:28) and also that ‘NOTHING can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus’ (Romans 8:39).Something about ourselves! I was born and brought up in Paisley. I confess to being a Buddy and a St. Mirren supporter! Aye ok!!!! Maggie hails from Buckie in Banffshire. A Buckie ‘QUINE’!!!!! We have one son, a daughter and three grandchildren. David is a teacher, and with his wife Carol and family, lives and works in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. Our daughter Anna now lives in Aberdeen and works as an assistant Golf Professional. Prior to returning to Scotland early last year she worked for

many years in Telluride, Colorado USA as a snowboard and ski instructor during the winter and at the local golf club during the summer. Her claim to fame is that she had the job of teaching Tom Cruise’s family to ski last winter. Tom wasn’t able to join them due to filming, but he showed his appreciation to Anna by sending her a big cake as a Christmas present. How good is that? WOW!!!! Sadly, we don’t get to see our family that often, but when we do it is always a great joy for us. On the subject of Church, we are members of Sandyford Henderson Memorial Parish Church in Glasgow.Maggie joins me in expressing our delight in being able to serve you during this time of Minister vacancy. We pray for a speedy new Minister appointment for you!Over the next few months, as we journey together in faith and fellowship, I do pray that we together may share in the blessings of what God has in store for this interim phase of our faith journey together. I pray that for as long as I will be your Locum Minister, we may enjoy and experience a blessed time as we fellowship together and receive the richness of God’s grace and favour.

Wishing you all much blessing…….

Rev. Morris M. Dutch

Open Doors – An Update

We have held four open doors days so far and they have all been successful and worth doing. We have received visitors on all occasions, mostly non-church members, but also lots of our own people dropped in to see us. All are made welcome and offered tea / coffee and a biscuit. Some like to be guided round the church having a few things pointed out to them (to do everything is a little overwhelming) and many say they will come back to do more. Others like to wander on their own with our information sheet and some just like to sit and chat. So far, we have managed to have enough volunteers for all our openings and they have all found the experience pleasant as well as worthwhile. Often visitors arrive with their own stories about St Mary’s from when they were children, or their parents or grandparents attended the church. Sales of souvenirs have been slow but steady and we have almost covered our costs. We would still like to have some more volunteers and the signing on sheet is in vestibule each Sunday. We will be open the first Wednesday in every month and we hope to make some of these Wednesdays ‘special’ We look forward to seeing many of you either as volunteers or visitors over the next few months. You will always be made welcome and there is tea / coffee and a biscuit for everyone.

Nursery News Our pre-school children returned to nursery on 15th August and we welcomed our new starts during week beginning 20th. I’m sure they will all have a fun filled year with lots to learn and explore! We welcomed back our Head of Centre, Joanne MacDonald, who has returned from maternity leave. As Joanne is expecting her second baby, she will start maternity leave again on 20th September. We wish her well as she becomes a mum again! This session the H of C will have three management days and two days

Christian Aid Week 2019This year 5 people from St Mary’s collected £668.06. This figure includes several donations.

The Soup Lunch raised £597.60. Sincere thanks to everyone who helped in whatever way and who donated to raise the above funds.

By giving to Christian Aid you are standing together to fight for dignity, equality and justice. For more than 60 years Christian Aid Week has mobilised thousands of churches and individuals in Britain and Ireland every May. Thank you for making a difference.

Stewardship . . .As you may have noted from previous articles in The Parishioner, I have been asked to develop a Stewardship programme at St Mary’s. Whilst we have not actively engaged in a stewardship programme since our Future Focus project back in 2011, since that date we have had our year of Centenary celebrations in 2013-2014 and more recently the major fabric project involving the re-roofing of the Church and stonework repairs. In themselves, stewardship programmes of a sort. However, now we need to look at developing a programme that will, in the short term, assist in addressing the Ministries and Mission shortfall and, in the longer term, ensure St Mary’s remains a sustainable worshipping and vibrant congregation for the years to come. As we often say Stewardship is not about solely raising money. If you remember the Giving for Living campaign of 2006 - 2007, there were 4 elements to work on and raising money was only one of those. Stewardship is about marshalling the resources inherent in the St Mary’s congregation for the benefit of St Mary’s whether that be money, time or talents. I will, over the next couple of months, be developing some stewardship ideas that I look forward to sharing with everyone. To deliver these plans will require help and if you are someone who would like to be involved please let me know by dropping me an email at my address below or giving me a call.

Just a very short report from me this month.

The Kirk Session met on the 8th May and the meeting was chaired by our Interim Moderator, Rev Ian Taylor. Many folks would have met Ian when he led our Sunday worship at the end of April, but the Session Meeting was another opportunity to get to know him and let Ian see the business that the Session is currently engaged with.As well as the regular business items, our accounts to December 2018 were also presented to Session. The accounts were approved by Session and they have now also been inspected and approved by the external Examiner.I am not going to say any more in regard to the accounts, as they will now be presented at our Annual Stated Meeting on Wednesday 12th June. This is part of our open Session Meeting, where members of the congregation and all our organisations are encouraged to attend. We meet in the Church Hall, commencing at 7.30pm and as always, tea and coffee will be available at the end of the meeting. Please take this opportunity to come along and be involved in the discussions relating to our finances and hear first-hand about our activities in regard to the vacancy and our proposed Stewardship Programme. This is both an exciting and a challenging time in the life of St Mary’s and we welcome the input and engagement of the whole congregation as we move forward. Finally, I would like to express a warm welcome to our Locum Minister, Rev Morris Dutch, who has been leading our worship since the beginning of May. I think it is fair to say he joined us at a very busy time, with the celebration of Holy Communion early in the month, followed by baptisms on the two subsequent Sundays! However, Morris has settled in very well and I appreciate all the support that he is able to bring in his role as Locum Minister. Thank you.

Kind regards,Gordon Morrison, Session Clerk

The Kirkintilloch Canal Festival Weekend will take place at the end of August this year. We will be holding our Teddy Bear Parachuting from the Tower Event on Sunday 1st September beginning at 2pm. The same as last year, those taking part can either bring their own teddy (or other soft toy) or they can adopt one of ours. We will also be running a café in the church halls selling tea and coffee as well as home baking.

(plus anyone who likes to chat, drink tea or coffee and eat some home baking)Craft afternoons are being planned for the Autumn. They will be held in the Session House beginning at 2pm on the third Monday of each month starting in September. Last year we held a few very successful afternoons making stars and snowflakes, which have been carefully stored and we have enough for this year’s Church Christmas decorations. 2013 marked the 1450th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity in the UK. It was brought by St Columba from Ireland to Iona – a tiny island off Mull, in the Western Highlands.Columba (c. 521 -97) was born in Donegal of the royal Ui Neill clan, and trained as a monk. He founded the monasteries of Derry (546), Durrow (c.556) and probably Kells. But in 565 Columba left Ireland with twelve companions for Iona, an island off southwest Scotland. Iona had been given to him for a monastery by the ruler of the Irish Dalriada. Why would a monk in his mid-40s go into such voluntary exile? Various explanations include: voluntary exile for Christ, an attempt to help overseas compatriots in their struggle for survival, or even as some sort of punishment for his part in a row over a psalter in Ireland. Whatever the reason, Columba went to Iona and spent the rest of his life in Scotland, returning to Ireland only for occasional visits.Columba’s biographer, Adomnan, portrays him as a tall, striking figure of powerful build and impressive presence, who combined the skills of scholar, poet and ruler with a fearless commitment to God’s cause. Able, ardent, and sometimes harsh, Columba seems to have mellowed with age. As well as building his monastery on Iona, Columba also converted Brude, king of the Picts. Columba had great skill as a scribe, and an example of this can be seen in the Cathach of Columba, a late 6th century psalter in the Irish Academy, which is the oldest surviving example of Irish majuscule writing. In his later years Columba spent much time transcribing books. Columba’s death was apparently foreseen by his community, and even, it seems, sensed by his favourite horse. He died in the church just before Matins, and it is a tribute to this man that his traditions were upheld by his followers for about a century, not least in the Synod of Whitby and in Irish monasteries on the continent of Europe.

Here is a prayer of St Columba:Christ With UsMy dearest Lord,Be Thou a bright flame before me,Be Thou a guiding star above me,Be Thou a smooth path beneath me,Be Thou a kindly shepherd behind me,Today and evermore.

British families should do what families in southern Europe do – take the extended family on holiday, especially the grandparents, and include them more into their daily lives. So urges Mims Davies, the Minister for Sport. She says that when visiting some of Europe’s beaches, “you will find this huge, wonderful plethora of people on the beach and you will think ‘doesn’t that look fun?’ I think that when we are a little more bold about how we do things, we find so much more joy in it. I was there for the latter parts of my parents’ lives – I will never regret that. You won’t get that time again.”

Looking back on D-Day 1944D-Day took place 75 years ago, on 6th June 1944, when over 150,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy, France. The Battle of Normandy ended on 25th August with victory for the Allies. It began the liberation of France – and eventually Europe – from Nazi control and laid the foundations of victory on the Western Front. Planning for the operation involved a great deal of deception as to timing and the precise location of the landings. The weather on D-Day was not ideal, and the operation had to be delayed 24 hours. None of the immediate goals were achieved, but a foothold was gained which the Allies expanded over the coming months. The Germans had been misled by inaccurate storm forecasts and were unprepared – with many leaders, including General Rommel, not in position.King George VI had earlier rallied England to prayer, and on the eve of battle crowded services were held on landing craft, ships and airfields, with chaplains urging troops to put their trust in God. In America, as news of the invasion was broadcast, stores closed and prayer meetings were organised all over the country.Museums, memorials, and war cemeteries in Normandy still welcome many visitors each year.

Take your grandparents on holiday!

My dear Nephew DarrenThe estimate for re-hanging the bells in our church tower came as a great shock. The church council discussed fund-raising at length. Someone suggested selling part of the Rectory garden for building, another for getting 200 parishioners to loan £1,000 each, interest-free. Then Mrs French suggested holding a jumble sale. The jumble sale won – mainly because it was achievable without a great fight, and also gave everyone an opportunity to see what their neighbours think of as junk.

Expensive articles were brought with an ostentatious show of modesty when everyone was sorting donations. Genuine jumble, such as odd plates, old blankets and mysterious kitchen gadgets, were left at the church door in the dead of night.

On the day of the jumble sale, our helpers were ready behind wobbly tables stacked high with stuff. Had the tables collapsed, half the congregation would have been smothered. Little Miss Faversham was having a wonderful time flitting from table to table like a woolly bumble bee, kitting herself out for another year.

When the doors opened and the customers poured in, I realised how the Italians must have felt when they saw Hannibal with his elephants pouring

down the sides of the Alps. That is when the mettle of our ladies really showed. They were tremendous - haggling at great length over whether something worth £10 should go for 10p or 11p. I noticed that those who are used to riding with hounds seem best able to control the crowds – even if they occasionally tended to regard the customers as the fox.

As it happened, the youth club were going pot-holing that day, so most of the teenagers bought complete sets of clothing for 10p which could then be discarded afterwards. But I wondered what their caving instructor would think of teenagers arriving dressed in dinner jackets and tweed skirts.

Two days of preparation yielded a battle that was over in less than an hour. We emerged bloodied but unbowed, with only scraps of jumble left. Then it was home for a bath and a strong restorative, in the knowledge that the first step to saving the bells has been taken. Only another 2,500 jumble sales and we shall have reached our target. Indeed, the only jarring note of the day was to discover someone with a peculiar sense of humour had put a note on my car: “Sold – to be collected later”.

Your loving uncle,Eustace
