Safe Haven Sunday: Equipping the Family, Safeguarding Children

The Diocese of Lafayette with St. Anthony of Padua Parish and Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish is setting aside this weekend, March 9/10, 2019, as Safe Haven Sunday in order to give focused time and resources to address the harmfulness of pornography and other online threats to marriages, family life and culture. See my letter on page 6 of this bulletin for more information.

RCIA: Rite of SendingAt this Sunday’s 9:00 a.m. mass in St. Anthony Church we celebrate the Rite of Sending the Catechumens for election and the Candidates for recognition by Bishop Deshotel. Let me clarify some terms: A Catechumen is a person who has never been baptized and is preparing to celebrate all three of the Sacraments of Christian Initiation, that is Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. A Candidate in the RICA is either (1) a person already baptized in the Catholic Rites and completing his or her catechetical formation, preparing for Confirmation and/or Eucharist, or (2) a person already baptized in a non-Catholic Rite (like Baptist, Methodist, non-denominational, etc.) and is preparing for reception into full communion of the Catholic Church, where they will make a profession of faith and Confirmation and Eucharist. [The baptism in the non-Catholic Rite must be with water and the Trinitarian Formula.]

Use of Latin and Greek Texts during Mass The Apostles Creed during Mass

To be one with the universal Church in these forty days and forty nights in the “desert” of Lent, we use at St. Anthony

Church the Latin and Greek texts during the Sundays of Lent. For the masses we sing, we will sing the Latin texts of the Holy (Sanctus, # 292) and the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei, #295); we will sing the Greek text of the Lord, Have Mercy (Kyrie, # 2). The whole Church comes to Jesus, and with Jesus we renounce the tempter. At both Annunciation and St. Anthony during Lent and Easter Times we use the option of the Apostles Creed for the Profession of Faith as it better corresponds to the questions and answers of the Profession of Faith at Easter.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? Question: At times, temptation seems so powerful that it is almost impossible to resist. How can I be stronger in my resolve to avoid sin and temptation?Answer: The saints have written that every human person desires the good. In a sense, we don’t desire sin itself. Temptation is powerful because there is at least some bit of good in it. Even in the blackest of sin, there is something good that becomes twisted. We can look for good in sin when we feel it is lacking in our own life. When we lack true relational intimacy, it can be easy to turn to lust. When we lack confidence in God in our own lives, it can be easy to judge others or to grasp for control over situations. When we lack peace in the present moment, it can be easy to compete with others or to treat others poorly in our quest for success. Overcoming temptation isn’t just about repressing our sinful desires. If that’s all we do, they’ll just burst out someplace else! If there is a recurring temptation in your life, prayerfully consider why this is so appealing to you. Submit this to God and bring it to a wise person. And in the meantime, continue to resist temptation to sin. If we fail to choose God in small choices, we’re several steps down the road towards failing in larger ones. Pray for the grace to persevere!

GOSPEL FOR THE FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT, YEAR C – Luke 4:1-13

As we enter into this Lenten season of penance and self-denial, we’re reminded that the God we follow is no stranger to these things. In this Sunday’s Gospel, we see the temptations of Jesus which have parallels throughout Scripture and in our own lives. The apostle John warns against temptations to sensual lust, enticement of the eyes, and a pretentious life (cf. 1 John 2:16). Before Eve plucks the fruit from the tree, she hears it is good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom (cf. Genesis 3:6). The temptations of Jesus are our own.

“Turn these stones to bread.” Here is the lure of bodily comfort, like good food or sensual lust. It’s the simplest of temptations because it’s instinctual. We want good for our bodies! But there may be times these bodily goods don’t serve the higher good

for our souls. The leap “from the temple parapet” would entice the eye of the person watching. A feat like this would prove Jesus’ Messianic ability. His popularity could be a shortcut to the cross. We might not be daredevils, but we want people to like us and be impressed by us. Do we sacrifice our values along the way? To “bow and worship” the devil - and so claim power and a pretentious life - seems like a dramatic temptation. Not everyone may feel enticed by power in the professional sense, but all of us want control. A volunteer team can feel just as intense as the boardroom! How often do we prefer to be in control of our lives (and perhaps even the lives of others), rather than allow God to be God?When we consider areas of temptation and sin, it’s not to feel ashamed. The temptation in the desert reminds us that we are not alone and that the strength of Jesus can be our strength, too.

QuESTIOnS OF THE WEEKFirst Reading – Deuteronomy 26:4-10 - Throughout the Book of Deuteronomy, and in today’s reading, Moses reminds the Israelites of how God was present throughout their history. Moses instructed Israel to make a sacrificial offering to the Lord God in thanksgiving. As we begin the season of Lent, how will you show gratitude to the Lord? Second Reading - Romans 10:9-13 – St. Paul teaches the Roman Christians that everyone (Jew and Gentile alike) who believes in Christ with their heart and mind will be saved. Why do you think anyone would object to this teaching? Gospel Reading – luke 4:1-13 - Jesus began his public ministry defeating the temptations of the devil. How do you think the devil tempts you?

a letter in Regard to Safe Haven Sunday -- March 10, 2019Dear friends,

As your pastor, I am always impressed by the love I see in the families of both St. Anthony of Padua Parish and Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish. I am constantly giving God thanks for your many efforts that truly uphold the dignity of marriage and family life. Thank you!

As you work hard to create safe havens for your children and spouse, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and I wish to bring one particular issue to your attention. It’s not easy to discuss, but it’s important. That issue is pornography.

In November of 2016, the USCCB released a pastoral response to pornography, called create in Me a clean Heart. The intention of writing this document was to:

• offer healing and hope to those who have been wounded by pornography;

• articulate the Catholic Church’s response to the pastoral crisis brought about by the production and use of pornography; and

• raise awareness of its pervasiveness and harms.

Why? Because pornography is hurting many people, including marriages and families, singles, priests and religious, and even children. It hurts the healthy process of vocational discernment for our young people. Pornography use impacts the relationships of children with their parents, husbands with their wives (and vice versa), the pastor with his community, and most importantly, our relationship with our Lord.

In the formal statement, the USCCB speak directly to parents about being proactive about the issue of pornography in the life of the home with their children and together as a married couple ensure the home keeps its status as a safe haven for all. The Bishops state, “The use of pornography by anyone in the home deprives the home of its role as a safe haven and has negative effects throughout a family’s life and across generation.”

Thus, on this weekend, March 9/10, 2019 we celebrate the first annual Safe Haven Sunday with the theme “Equipping the Family, Safeguarding children.”

This awareness effort is meant to draw our attention as a community to the seriousness of the issues of pornography and to recommit ourselves to take steps to ensure our homes are safe havens for all.

Today’s awareness day is celebrated through prayer and a reflection within the context of the Mass. After Mass, we have available for individual and family Covenant Eyes’ book, Equipped: Smart Catholic Parenting in a Sexualized Culture. This book includes a unique seven-day text-to-opt-in program: The Equipped 7-Day Challenge. This Challenge provides practical tips any caring adult can take to create safer digital environments for themselves and our young people.

With the book [and even if we run out of books], you can participate with this program by joining The Equipped 7-Day Challenge: A Digital Crash Course by texting SECURE TO 66866 to receive seven days of emailed digital tips!

These e-mail topics are: Introductory Video, YouTube Restricted Mode, Understanding Apps, iPhone Restrictions, Google Safe Search, The Importance of Accountability, Social Media and Teens, Critical Conversations.

Through the intercession of the Holy Family of Nazareth, intercessors of the home, and St. Michael, I am,

Sincerely Yours in the Lord Jesus Christ,
