Dear Friends,
How are you holding up? Let’s be honest,
now. It seemed to me that prior to the Coronavirus,
folks were in not such a great place. Politics and
politicians were showing the real and searing
divisions in our country. The economy was still not
working for the working class as well as was
promised. The run-up to the election looked and
sounded like book of fiction, but who could really
make that stuff up? The vitriol was on the cusp of
becoming a national standard for communication.
Secularization was, and is still, on the
rise. People are trying to find happiness in their
lives only to realize the places they were looking in
were, at best, only fleeting moments of
happiness. All main line denominations experienced
a steep decline in numbers and, as result, resources
fell exponentially. When you suddenly realize you
are no longer part of the majority either in society or
in the Church, that is a concrete reality that hits very
hard.
What to do? Take very seriously what shape
you are in, right now, and see if this is where you
want to remain. Prior to 9-11, a couple I know were
living what many folks would call the good
life. They are not wealthy, but comfortable. They
traveled, partied with their friends, had all the right
possessions, etc. They weren’t attending church
because of second marriage situation and weren’t
really that interested in getting annulments.
However, as they related their story to me, after
9-11, the wife looked at the husband and said that if
we don’t change our lives and give it some real
meaning after this experience, then we are really
bad people. He agreed, and were true to their word,
found the real meaning of their lives in their Catholic
faith.
It’s Palm Sunday, the beginning of the most
holy week of the Christian year and it turned the
world on its head! All of that was done by God, for
us, to give our lives real meaning! Jesus died a very
shameful death, like that of a common
criminal. Scripture scholar John Pilch puts it very
succinctly when he says, “In our culture, where
suffering is a nuisance and pain can readily be
avoided by cleverness or medicine, it is difficult to
admire Mediterranean manliness demonstrated in
endurance.” In other words, during this pandemic,
which we will endure by taking the time to
strengthen our faith. We will be able to find the
meaning of our lives refreshed, renewed and
invigorated by what we’ve always known. What
that is, is, no matter your political party, your
Church affiliation, your sexuality, the disagreements
that have caused divisions and separation in our
lives, it’s all about Jesus. No, no “buts” or “what
if’s,” It’s about Jesus. It’s about being
grateful. When the pandemic is over, who will you
be?
Peace, Fr. Michael

On this day of great rejoicing,
Lord Jesus Christ, when we welcome
You as our King and Savior,
we also walk in the shadow of Your cross.
Hosanna! We cry.
Blessed are You who come
in God’s name to save us.
Hosanna!
Strengthen our faith on this Palm Sunday
so that when the time comes
to carry the cross we might still
call out to You with heartfelt praise.
Give us the grace and the courage
to follow You this Holy week
from death to resurrection,
from darkness to the fullness of light.
We need You,
Lord Jesus Christ, our Savior.
Hosanna!
APRIL 4TH AND 5TH, 2020
Prayer During A Health Crisis
Compassionate and Loving Father,
In the face of confusion and concern
impart to us the calm of your presence.
In You allow us to find hope and healing.
Be with those who serve the sick
and give them Your caring hands.
Be with those who lead
and give them Your Spirit of wisdom.
Be with those who have fallen ill
and give them Your comforting heart.
Wrap your arms around our world
and hold us in your love.
Allow us at this time of trial to then
serve as instruments of that love
to all we meet.
We ask this in Your Name.
Amen.
