When you come into a Catholic church, there is a little dish, called a holy wa- ter font. It is filled with holy water (water that has been blessed by a priest). The purpose of this water is to remind ourselves as we enter the church of our Baptism. You simply dip your fingers into the holy water font and make the Sign of the Cross. It is a also used as a blessing to remind ourselves of God’s loving care. This practice can be traced back to our church origins. Centuries ago, there were basins of water at the entrance churches. You could wash your hands and face before entering the sacred place. Remember back in the early days of the church, people walked along dusty roads, wore simple sandals and a tunic. After the long walk to a church or other holy place, they were dusty and dirty. This basin of water was used to wash away this dust before entering the church. As the church grew in membership, the crowds attending Mass also grew. So this washing became symbolic. The faithful could dip their fingers into a small bowl (the holy water font) and sprinkle themselves with the water. It is cus- tomary even today to make the Sign of the Cross upon entering the church before Mass. Do you have to do this? Does it make your prayers “better”? Certainly not—it is a visual reminder of our Baptism and call to holiness. Our Baptism washed away our original sin and this blessing of ourselves upon entering the church is a reminder of that ceremony! Obviously, if you have a cold or some other infectious disease, you might want to refrain from dipping your fingers in the holy water font, but still make the Sign of the Cross as a reminder of your Baptism. And some ask if you should do this when you leave church after Mass. Because this holy water is a sacramental (not a sacrament), and it reminds us of our Baptism, it is appropriate that we bless our- selves on the way into Mass because it is through Bap- tism that we approach the other sacraments. However, on the way out we have, most likely, just received our Lord under the form of bread and, perhaps, wine. We’ve received a blessing from the priest. Since a sac- ramental is to prepare us to received grace and sacra- ments confer grace, there is no theological reason to bless ourselves on the way out of Mass. But like many habits, we have always blessed ourselves with the holy water on the way out of church also. It is not wrong, and by all means, continue to bless yourself — one can never be blessed too much! Just think about what and why you are doing it —- reminding yourself of your Baptism and the blessings that God gives us. cjb WINGS NEWS--TACO BAR Women in God's Service (WINGS) will meet Thurs. Nov. 17 from 6 -8 PM at St Isidore hall for a Taco Dinner. Meat will be provided, please bring a topping or other item to complete the meal. SPECIAL PRAYERS . . . . . . For those who long to be delivered from illness and pain especially: Fr. Ray, Jennifer Baker (friend of Cindy Broome), Helen Ann Bates, Todd Berry, Shelby Porubsky, Katie Florian, Malia Koger, Shirley Palatka, Sister Rosalyn Seda, OP (Sister of Joe Tejkl), Craig Henning, Jerry Proctor (friend of Rick & Betty Sloat), Justin Cole, Bob Dobski, Pauline Fischer, (Relative of Rose Thering), . . . Always remember in your prayers all who serve in the military.

RCIA RECAP. . . Classes for those wishing

to become Catholic have started. These classes will run from now until Easter. But they are not just for those wishing to join the church. Anyone can attend them! Right now we have 4 adults and their sponsors attending class. We are learning about the church in general, theology, and reasons why we as Catholics do what we do. Have you forgotten some of the “whys” of your faith and would like a refresher? Then con-sider coming and joining the group after Sunday Mass. We usually meet every other Sunday. Check the Calendar of Events for meeting dates! We would appreciate having others join us and share their knowledge of their Catholic faith with those eager to become full participants in this wonderful faith! We all have lots of questions—maybe you have the answer for one of our candidates! There is more to your faith than just at-tending Mass.

FREE BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS

QUILTING MINISTRY is busy as always. We do not get any money for supplies from the church budget, we have been very fortunate to have had many sewing supplies donated to us. However, sometimes, we need other things that are not donated. Right now we are making small gifts for our annual “Christmas Store”. This year’s Christmas Store money will be kept by the Quilting Ministry to buy supplies for next year. (In the past, the Christmas Store money has been donated to various charities, including the Elsie Food Bank, Catholic Chari-ties, etc.) Hopefully, we will have some new items in our “Store” that you might be able to purchase for that last minute gift need! We would love to have some new faces on Thursday to help make some of these gifts. Come join us this Thursday and see what we are making! As always, we thank you in advance for your generous support.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development -Nov. 19 & 20

This collection was mandated by the US bishops to address the root causes of poverty in America through promo-tion and support of community-controlled, self-help organizations and transformative education. Extra enve-lopes are in the church entryway.

Thanks, Garcias, Merci, Grazie, Děkuji, Dziękuję Ci, Danke sehr . . . No matter how you say it, the Faith Formation students want to give a big THANKS to all who came to the soup and bread fundraiser or donated soup and baked goods. Through your ef-forts, we raised $246.35 for the NO KID GOES HUNGRY PROGRAM and $100 for the Confirmation Retreat. We couldn’t have done it without YOUR HELP!

Thanks again, Religious Education Students.
