The Epiphany of the Lord

Pastor’s Corner

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

Manifestation of Jesus to the World

January 6

“Our observance of the Christmas Season reaches its high point in today’s celebration of the Epiphany of the Lord. An Epiphany is a manifestation. Today, the reality of Jesus as Savior is manifested to the world, symbolized by the persons of the Magi. The story of the Magi is a wonderful example to us that, even in times of distress and seeming failure, the Lord is waiting to be discovered by us. In imitation of these mysterious figures from the East, let us open our hearts to a new manifestation of Christ in this moment of grace.” Father Richard

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD

Divine Son Revealed, Ends the Christmas Season and Begins Short Ordinary Time

January 13

“Today the Christmas season draws to a close as we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. We extend our celebration of Epiphany by focusing on the manifestation of Christ to the world. Today we hear God’s voice over the waters of the Jordan: ‘You are my beloved Son, with you I am well pleased.’ As Christians, we believe that God’s words are meant for all who are baptized in Christ. We are God’s beloved sons and daughters in whom God is well pleased. Today’s feast also begins the first week in the Ordinary Time.”

Vocations Corner: THE VOCATIONS ICON

PRAYER PROGRAM NEEDS YOUR HELP Changes have been made to improve the Vocation Icon distribution:

1. Households will be recruited right before each Mass begins. If you would like to receive the Icon at the end of Mass, simply see the Icon Greeter who stands holding the Icon near the holy water fountains. Single parish members, couples, and families are all encouraged to participate in asking the Lord's blessing upon those who answer His call. There will no longer be advance sign-up for the Icon distribution. Taking the Vocation Icon home is easy. Simply say a short prayer for vocations each day during the week, then return the Icon at any Mass the following weekend.

2. If you have been thinking about finding a simple way to serve the Lord, please consider becoming a VOCATIONS ICON GREETER. Help us grow our greeter team by serving for a few minutes before Mass begins about two or three times a quarter. It's an opportunity to invite families to pray together for vocations.

3. If you would like to truly give back to the Lord for His gifts of the clergy and religious, consider joining our parish VOCATIONS MINISTRY TEAM. This small group works to develop vocation awareness in the parish and show appreciation to those who have been called. Our next meeting is Sunday, January 13, 2019 at 2:00pm. Join us in Room 6. We meet once every 3 months.

4. A BIG THANK YOU to our faithful 2018 Vocation Icon Households who have taken the Vocation Icon into their home for a week of prayers during the past year. Your prayers give our clergy, deacons, seminarians, and religious strength, joy, and peace. The whole parish appreciates your willing, thoughtful service. May the Holy Spirit bless you always.

WHY PRAY FOR VOCATIONS? As Pope John Paul II encouraged the young people gathered for World Youth Day at Notre-Dame de Paris in August of 1997:

“I invite you all to pray for those young people who, throughout the world, hear the call of the Lord and for those who may be afraid to answer that call.

May they find educators at hand to guide them! May they perceive the grandeur of their vocation: to love Christ above all else as a call to freedom and happiness!

Pray so that the Church may help you in your search and in arriving at a correct discernment!

Pray so that Christian communities may always know how to pass on the call of the Lord to the younger generations!”

Prayer Shawl Ministry

If you like to knit or crochet and are looking for a way to answer God’s call to serve, then please consider becoming a member of Good Shepherd’s Prayer Shawl Ministry. This ministry is a wonderful way to demonstrate God’s love, comfort, and mercy to people experiencing difficult times.

Members of the Prayer Shawl Ministry typically meet the 1

st Wednesday of each month at 9:30am in Room 5 to

knit and/or crochet as a group and pray over the shawls and lap blankets. If you prefer to knit or crochet prayer shawls and lap blankets on your own and then give them to our Prayer Shawl Ministry to pray over, simply bring your creations to the Parish Office, where you can complete a donation card.

Donations of regular worsted yarn are always appreciated!

For more information and to donate yarn, please contact Ann Lussier, Lead Minister for the GSCC Prayer Shawl Ministry, at [email protected].

Join us at our next gathering! Wed, Jan. 9 | 9:30am | Room 5

In addition to the cold weather outside, many people experience winters in their personal lives. A recent loss through death, divorce, or relocation may leave them feeling lonely. A hospitalization, a cancer

diagnosis, or ongoing medical problems may leave them feeling isolated. The loss of a job, the fear of layoffs, or a financial setback can devastate one’s self-esteem. Family and personal struggles may leave them with nowhere to turn for support.

If you are going through a difficult time, our Stephen Ministers can bring God’s warm love back into your life. They provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care. They will meet with you privately on a weekly basis to listen, to support and encourage you, to pray with and for you, and to walk with you for the duration of your crisis.

Experience Christ’s Loving Care Ministry Spotlight

STEPHEN MINISTRY, Colleen W

Tell me about your ministry and what your ministry

does. “Stephen Ministry is a one-to-one lay caring ministry that helps people walk through difficult times with the help of a Stephen Minister. Stephen Ministry equips and empowers lay caregivers—called Stephen Ministers—to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting. Situations where we are called to walk beside someone might include the death of a loved one, loss of a job, loneliness, divorce or family issues, chronic / terminal illness or miscarriage, or some other life crisis.”

Why did you join this ministry? “Because Stephen Ministry is a practical and powerful way to respond to Christ’s commandment: ‘Love one another as I love you’ (John 15:12). I also heard an amazing testimony of a current Stephen Minister who was going through a difficult time in her life and what it meant to her to have a compassionate companion who provided her emotional and spiritual support. I knew then that I had a passion for bringing Christ’s love and care to people during their time of need.”

How have you grown in Christ through your

ministry? “My spirituality has increased tenfold as I have watched people heal through the working of the Holy Spirit (the Cure-giver) who is with us at each and every visit we make. It is an honor and a privilege to see this happen and to feel God’s almighty love surround us. I have realized that we are not alone. Nor do we have to walk alone through the sufferings and burdens placed before us. We all have many gifts that God can use to help others. This ministry has helped me to see that God’s grace is sufficient for me and through our weaknesses we are made stronger.”

How have you served others through your ministry? “Stephen Ministers serve others by meeting with those in our care on a weekly basis, until their need no longer exists. We are there for them when they need us and when others have drifted away. We bring strength, comfort and care to many difficult situations. We listen without judgement and love our care receivers no matter what is happening around them. This is truly God’s grace poured out on them through us, when life seems unbearable or simply hurts.”

Shepherd’s Teaching

PASTOR’S VISION STATEMENT The Catholic Community of Good Shepherd is intentional about evangelizing and making disciples in the spirit of Saints Francis and Clare, especially by seeking out the lost in need of reconciliation and conversion of heart to God, the Church, to oneself and others, so that all may experience the peace and joy of a personal relationship with Jesus.

Each year beginning on January 18 and ending on January 25, the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle, is designated as Prayer for Christian Unity in the universal calendar of the Catholic Church. This reflects centuries of the Church’s commitment to Ecumenism as reiterated at Vatican Council II. The Decree on Ecumenism (Unitatis Redintegratio) was promulgated on 21 November 1964 and the Declaration on the Relation of the Church to non-Christian Religions (Nostra Aetate) was issued on 28 October 1965 by the Pope and the Bishops as teachings of our Faith for all to believe. Moreover, the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1997) clearly speaks of Ecumenism (paragraphs 817, 818, 819, 820, 822, 855, 1271) “Baptism constitutes the foundation of communion among all Christians, including those who are not yet in full communion with the Catholic Church: For men who believe in Christ and have been properly baptized are put in some, though imperfect, communion with the Catholic Church. Indeed, divisions among Christians prevent the Church from realizing in practice the fullness of catholicity proper to her in those of her sons who, though joined to her by Baptism, are yet separated from full communion with her. The ruptures that wound the unity of Christ’s Body do not occur without human sin. Serious dissensions appeared and large communities became separated from full communion with the Catholic Church – for which, often enough, men of both sides were to blame. However, one cannot charge with the sin of the separation those who at present are born into these communities [that resulted from such separation] and in them are brought up in the faith of Christ, and the Catholic Church accepts them with respect and affection as brothers. Justified by faith in Baptism, [they] are incorporated into Christ; they have a right to be called Christians, and with good reason are accepted as brothers in the Lord by the children of the Catholic Church. The Church’s mission stimulates efforts towards Christian unity. Furthermore, many elements of sanctification and of truth are found outside the visible confines of the Catholic Church: the written Word of God; the life of grace; faith, hope, and charity, with the other interior gifts of the Holy Spirit, as well as visible elements. Christ’s Spirit uses these Churches and ecclesial communities as means of salvation, whose power derives from the fullness of grace and truth that Christ has entrusted to the Catholic Church. All these blessings come from Christ and lead to him, and are in themselves calls to Catholic unity. Christ always gives his Church the gift of unity, but the Church must always pray and work to maintain, reinforce, and perfect the unity that Christ wills for her. This is why Jesus himself prayed at the hour of his Passion, and does not cease praying to his Father, for the unity of his disciples: That they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be one in us, … so that the world may know that you have sent me. The desire to recover the unity of all Christians is a gift of Christ and a call of the Holy Spirit. Concern for achieving unity involves the whole Church, faithful and clergy alike. But we must realize that this holy objective – reconciliation of all Christians in the unity of the one and holy Church of Christ – transcends human powers and gifts.” Let us encourage, respect and reconcile our traditions! To promote Ecumenism in our parish, other denominations may give remarks or reflections at Mass from the choir podium, but only after a brief homily is preached from the Ambo by a Catholic priest or deacon. Distance keeps those of other faiths, laity, and Catholic Religious separate from reading the Gospel or substituting a homily when speaking or making appeals.

Upcoming CRHP Retreats for Men & Women

What is it like to attend a CRHP retreat? Testimonies from the Men’s Retreat:

“The CRHP weekend was exactly what I needed to help me get back on my faith path. It was a chance to renew my connection with Christ.” - Kyle K “I attended the CRHP retreat to increase my faith. I ended up finding 30 new friends all struggling to do the same.” - Don W “During the CRHP retreat, I found out that I was not alone facing the challenges that I thought were uniquely mine.” - Victor D “God answered my prayer. When I teetered on going to CRHP or not, He put His favorite advocate in my path one morning. I am so glad I listened and obeyed! The experience confirmed my desire to be the spiritual leader He wants me to be at home, at work, and in the community. Deep down I was ready, and He knew it!” - Bob P

Christ Renews His Parish is a spiritual renewal weekend designed to help individuals grow in their personal relationship with Jesus Christ and with others in their faith community. It is an excellent opportunity for Catholics to renew their understanding of the basic beliefs and traditions of their faith. It is a time to relax, pray, think about our priorities, and refresh ourselves spiritually. More importantly, it allows you the opportunity to examine, rediscover, and intensify your personal relationship with Christ.

This is a two-day retreat unlike any you have previously attended. Parishioners share with one another the ways they have found meaning, hope, peace, and love in their lives. They even share laughs along the way. The experience is personal, inspirational, and fulfilling. Many participants feel that the weekend experience has been among the most powerful and positive of their lives. The atmosphere is casual and you will begin friendships that will last a lifetime. Many of your fellow parishioners, who have previously attended, will be happy to share their experience.

Women’s Retreat Dates: January 26 - 27, 2019 August 10 - 11, 2019

Pick of the Week: Opening the Word: The Epiphany

On this day we encounter the Magi coming from the East to worship the baby Jesus. What were the Magi? And why did they travel so far to find the Child King? What did these “foreigners” see that eluded the leaders and people of Israel?

New Scripture Study for Women!

Tuesdays starting Jan. 8 | 9:30 - 11:00am in the Shepherd Center If we consider that God is the Divine Bridegroom and the Church is his Bride, then the prophets can be seen as “spiritual marriage counselors.” They afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted, calling us to return to our covenant relationship with God. They urge us to repentance, warn us of the dangers of sin, and announce the blessings of faithfulness. Their prophetic words speak to us even today, as they draw us closer to our heavenly Bridegroom.

Each week, you will come to know a prophet from Scripture and learn how his message sheds light on our faith and our lives. In getting to know these messengers of God, you will read Scripture and the Catechism, while answering thought-provoking questions and powerful reflections. Plus, you will learn practical ways to apply the messages of the prophets in your own life.

Wednesday Morning Study

Source and Summit: How the Mass Can Transform Your Life

Wednesdays starting Jan. 9 | 10:00 - 11:30am

The Mass is the Church’s greatest prayer! This study will help you get the most out of your participation at Mass through an exploration of the meaning and significance of its words and symbols. Learn how God entrusted the Mass to us as spiritual dynamite to transform us into the likeness of His Son, Jesus Christ. Discover how your life can be changed forever through the sacrament of Christ’s love, the Eucharist. Whether you are a lifelong Catholic or new to your faith, this study will challenge you to go deeper in your relationship with the Lord through the Mystery of the Mass. Sessions will combine lecture, small group reflection, and an interactive “tour” through the Mass. Register at gscc.net/scripturestudy Tuesday Evening Study

Those “Extra” Books in the Catholic Bible: Why They Matter Tuesdays starting Jan. 15 | Cost: $20 7:00 - 8:30pm | Most Catholics know that the Catholic Bible contains Old Testament books that are not included in the Protestant Bible. Perhaps we don’t give these writings much thought except when the subject of the difference between the biblical canons arises. Yet, most Christians agree that these books are valuable because they were written during the last two centuries before the birth of Christ. Therefore, they offer insight into Jewish history and thought shortly before and during the time of New Testament events and thus provide important background to the New Testament. Fragments of these important texts can be found in the Dead Sea Scrolls, and they continue to impact our Catholic faith and our understanding of the bible today. Join us and learn the special stories behind these books, which make the Catholic Bible unique and comprehensive. Register at gscc.net/scripturestudy
