Living the Paschal Mystery
Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
January 20 & 21, 2018
Think back to the first time you fell in love, not a crush,
but true love. The emotional, spiritual, intellectual con-
nection was undoubtedly strong and probably seemed
like it would last forever. That’s also the way the love
songs often sing of it. Yet, those initial stages inevita-
bly recede and the grind of daily life looms larger. At
that point the love may have developed into something
deeper, stronger. Or perhaps it died out altogether and
is now only a happy memory.
Something similar often happens with a faith life, and
the disciples were not immune to this. Today we hear
the story about how they started out strong, abandoning
everything to follow Jesus. We know that Simon Peter
will eventually confess Jesus as the Christ. And later,
Peter will deny three times that he even knows him.
The relationship that starts out with such promise, even
reaching soaring heights, can truly crash and burn. This
happened with the disciples; it can happen with us.

July 2018 offers a wonderful opportunity for your teen to be in-

(UPD) is a peace project which has been going on in Delaware for
42 years. Every year 18 Northern Irish Catholic and Protestant teens
come to stay with host families in Delaware for the month of July.
The US host teens participate in the month filled with all the daily
activities with the Northern Irish teens. It will be an amazing month
packed with trips to Philadelphia, DC, New York, Hershey Park,
beaches, pool parties, dances, shopping, as well as service projects,
leadership and team building events, visits to various places of wor-
ship – all directed towards developing tolerance and understanding
among people with different cultural and religious differences.
These activities are all covered in the low family fee of $200!
It will be a month which will last a lifetime! The bond created
among these teens within just a month is hard to believe. It is an

From the Office of the Bishop
The severe weather that we have experienced in the last few days
has given rise to many questions regarding the obligation to attend
Mass when driving and walking are dangerous.
“Canon law (1247) states that on Sundays and other holy days of
obligation, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass. How-
ever, the law does not expect the impossible nor can the fulfillment
of the obligation according to the norm of the law be burdensome or
dangerous.
There is no obligation to attend Mass if weather and/or road condi-
tions are unsafe or make travel dangerous or difficult, or, if one is
unable to get out of their driveway or parked space.
Those persons who are unable to attend Mass under such conditions
may view the celebration of Mass on television, depending on local
television schedules. Some time should be given to private or family
prayer in order to sanctify the Lord’s Day.
Prayers should be offered for those affected by the storm.”

to me." When is listening hard for you? If you're busy or tired, ask
for a better time. Is there a conversation you've been avoiding?
Parenting Pointers Talk with your child about the value of life no matter how

Are you Being Called to God? Jonah did not answer God's call quickly; he wasn't interested in the
mission God had for him. Sometimes the attraction of various career
opportunities keeps us from being interested in hearing and respond-
ing to God's call. Is the Lord calling you to priesthood or to reli-
gious life? What could be more satisfying or fulfilling than taking
on a mission from God? Call or write Father Norm Carroll, Dioce-
san Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113 or

January 21, 2018 Mark’s message this week reminds us that, like the disciples, we are called to follow Christ and spread
his message. Simon and Andrew dropped everything they were doing to follow Jesus. Leaving their responsibilities, and their own father, must have taken a great amount of courage. As followers of Christ we are often asked to make tough choices. When called to make a change in your life, how do you answer? Do you have the courage to leave behind what Christ requests, so you can become a better disciple? Like the disciples we may be asked to step outside our comfort zone, but like the disciples when you rely on Christ, you accomplish great things.
