Volume 66, No. 38 – Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time – September 17, 2017

PASTOR’S CORNER Diaconate Ordination of Benjamin Pitre On September 28, 2017, our very own parishioner of St. Landry, Benjamin Pitre, will be ordained to the transitional diaconate at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy. Many of you will be travelling to Rome for the ordination, as will I. It is a wonderful day for our parish, as it will be the first ordination to the transitional diaconate since Bishop Jarrell, who recently celebrated the 50th Jubilee of his ordination. We also look forward to Benjamin's priestly ordination, which is scheduled for June 23, 2018 here in the diocese. He will celebrate his first Mass of Thanksgiving here at St. Landry on June 24, and we will certainly look forward to that day and celebration. We will pray for him at all our Masses this weekend and next, and I certainly hope that you continue to lift him up in your personal prayer as well. The following is a little bit about Benjamin and his journey to this day, as well as a note from him to us here at St. Landry. Biography of Benjamin Pitre Benjamin is a lifelong parishioner of St. Landry Catholic Church. He graduated from OCS in 2002 and from LSU in 2006 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He was commissioned as an Ensign in the US Navy upon graduation from LSU. He served on active duty for five years, which included an assignment on the submarine USS Olympia SSN 717 stationed in Pearl Harbor. After exiting submarine service, Benjamin entered seminary formation in 2012. Through five years of seminary formation, he has attended St. Joseph's Seminary College in Covington, earning a B.A. in Philosophy, and is currently attending the Pontifical North American College in Rome. As of this past June, Benjamin has earned a Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas. After his ordination to the diaconate, Benjamin has one year remaining of seminary formation prior to ordination to the priesthood in June of next year. Benjamin is the son of Ben and Suzanne Pitre from Prairie Ronde and the grandson of Clyde and Ruby Pitre (both deceased) from Opelousas and Harry (deceased) and Sue Hebert from Plaquemine. A Note from Benjamin to us: To all parishioners and friends of St. Landry Parish, greetings. In a very short time, I will be consecrated to the Order of Deacon. As with any consecration within the sacrament of Holy Orders, I will be consecrated for the sake of the Church. Truly, I will be consecrated for the sake of each one of you, parishioners and friends of St. Landry Parish, and for this reason I am happy to receive it. This will be a very important moment in my life, and Jesus desires that I share it not with just anyone but with you. Therefore, I am honored to do so, and I promise to take each one of you with me, to the best of my ability, to the altar in St. Peter’s Basilica. Finally, I perceive clearly that I have persevered to this point only through your assistance in its many forms, both spiritual and material. With sincere gratitude, I thank you for every single act of kindness and generosity, especially those of which I am unaware. Indeed, only in the end will I fully comprehend and appreciate how much St. Landry has supported and sustained me through the years. With love, I am perpetually yours in Jesus, Ben

READINGS FOR FAITH SHARING Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Sirach 27:30 – 28:7 We cannot nourish

anger and expect our own sins to be forgiven.

Psalm 103 “The Lord is kind and merciful…”

Romans 14:7-9 Whether we live or die, we do so in Christ.

Matthew 18:21-35 Jesus says we must not forgive seven times, but seventy-seven times.

The word from today’s readings is reconciliation. Sirach tells us that wrath and anger are hateful things. Jesus says we are to forgive seventy-seven times. Let us reflect on grudges we have held and resentments we still carry. May these readings be the spark that lights our way to reconciliation with all our sisters and brothers. READINGS FOR NEXT WEEKEND Isaiah 55:6-9, Psalm 145, Philipians 1:20c-24, 27a Matthew 20:1-16a

Prayer for Protection Against Hurricanes O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where a storm-less eternity awaits us. Amen.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT Today’s Gospel reading continues Jesus’ instruction on being good stewards of others – the direction that if we love Jesus Christ we must forgive others 77 times. The reading compels us to consider one of the most difficult practices of Christian Discipleship. Forgiveness is the way of Jesus – the way of the cross. Vengeance, bitterness, and hatred seem so much easier, and certainly more desirable. Forgiveness is a hard road to travel, but is the only road that truly leads us to a life in Christ. Consider this week, who you need to forgive.
