On 29 June the Parish of Ss Peter & Paul celebrated our175 birthday. The church was given a new coat as a special birthday gift.
Tamryn, together with other pilgrims from
the Diocese and with our prayers and intentions, left for Poland to attend
the World Youth Day.
Mrs Imelda Stone was the last chairlady of the Club A new committee was appointed for the League. They were: President – Mrs Groth Vice President – Mrs Moir
Secretary / Treasurer – Mrs Tess Thomas Tess composed the words and music for the Catholic
Women’s League Anthem which is used by all branches in South Africa.
Membership slowly increased until the early 1990s – about 54
members. From 1992 to 1995, two monthly meetings were held, one morning and one evening, to accommodate more
ladies. However, from 1992 onward, membership went into a steady decline and since 2000 our membership has been
less than 10.
Through the years the CWL have helped various charitable institutions such as Bethesda Aids Hospice, George Night
Shelter, Kinderkraaltjie and Jirah House. In recent years we have concentrated on the Step-a-side Seminary, Options and Phambili Shelter. We also make contributions to St Vincent de Paul and the Hospital Carers. This year we have added
Fr Leon’s Carehome in Oudtshoorn to our projects.
Our membership is now down to 6 ladies with our current President being Sandy Page and the Secretary / Treasurer
being Theresa Moore.
CWL would really welcome new members. If any lady is interested, please contact Sandy, Theresa or
the Parish

In 1984, Pope John Paul II invited young people from around the world to join him at the close of the Holy Year of Redemption. Over 300 000 responded to this invitation and so the idea of World Youth Day was born. The following year the United Nation’s declared an International Year of the Youth and the Pope used this opportunity to invite youth to Rome on Palm Sunday. At the end of that year, the Pope announced the institution of World Youth Day. Since then, every Palm Sunday has been designated as a World Youth Day to be celebrated on a Diocesan and Parish level. The first international gathering of youth happened in 1987 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Po-land 2016 is the 13th International World Youth Day gathering. Previous host countries have included Australia, Canada, Philippines and a variety of European countries. Over 3 million people attended the various activities held in Rio, Brazil in 2013.
World Youth Day is
truly a universal gathering as, although
organised and run by the Catholic Church,
is open to young people of all faiths.
The legacy left by John Paul II, and continued
by his successors, invites the youth of the
world to be commissioned to be
faithful living witnesses as Disciples of Christ.

From the Diary of Fr. Aidan Devereux
Parish Priest Ss Peter & Paul
April 1841 – April 1846
On the 25 of Feb Feast of St. Mathias
1842 alone and without any pomp or cere-
monies I blessed the foundation stone of
the new church. I found that if I collected
the few Catholics to witness it, a crowd of
school-boys and others would attend and
cause a disturbance.
On the 25 April the foundations were fin-
ished and ready for the brick work.
On the 26 the V Apostolic arrived after a
tedious voyage of 13 days on sea.

“When, back in 1985, I wanted to start the World Youth Days … I imagined a pow-
erful moment in which the young people of the world could meet Christ, who is
eternally young, and could learn from Him how to be bearers of the Gospel to
other young people. This evening, together with you, I praise God and give
thanks to him for the gift bestowed on the Church through the World Youth Days.
Millions of young people have taken part, and as a result have become better
and more committed Christian witnesses.”
John Paul II addressing 800 000 at the WYD vigil in Toronto 2002
