NovemberThe news about a royal pregnancy has recently taken the media by storm. One person said, ‘It’s as if there’s never been a pregnancy before.’ Perhaps one of the reasons for huge coverage of a future royal baby is that good news is rarely reported. And people are happy when there is genuinely something good to hear.However, did you know that you can see ‘good’ differently and God will bring it about? The Kingdom of heaven is an everlasting universal kingdom of love, goodness, and righteousness because the King of heaven is by nature loving, good, and righteous.Psalm 37:3-7 says this...Trust in the Lord and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him and he will do this:He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn,
your vindication like the noonday sun.Be still before the Lord
and wait patiently for him;...There is a little bit you can do to see the amazingly good things that God will do on your behalf because He loves you.Trust in the LordTake delight in the LordCommit your way to the LordHe will make your righteous reward shineBe still before the LordGod loves you. He longs to do good for you. And for you to see good around you because that’s His kingdom. So trust in, take delight in, commit your way to, and be still before him,...He will make your righteous reward shine.God bless you,

All Saints’ October MarketWe encountered our first wet day market for some months on 6th October. Market bakers had been hard at work but, despite the rain, our regular customers came in for a hot drink and a chat. We even had a few new faces escaping from the weather to find out what was going on in the Church Room! Cheryl came with her lovely photo cards and some very attractive Christmas cards. We raised £221.05 for church funds. Once again our thanks go to those who kindly donated items and to our visitors for braving the weather.Our next market will be on Saturday, 3rd November when the Longhursts will bring a Fair Trade and Traidcraft stall which will include Christmas items and cards. There will be the normal baking stall. For further information - Judith Hillman, 01761 490324, Janet Smith 490584 or Gillian Wookey 490336.
All Soul’s ServiceA Service of Thanksgiving for the departed will take place at All Saints’ Church on Saturday, 3rd November, 2018 at 3.00pm. Caring in BristolJulian House in Bristol is now partnering with the Trinity Centre to provide an enhanced provision for homeless and destitute people in Bristol this Christmas.We are, once more, being encouraged to support this worthwhile cause. Donations of warm good-quality second-hand clothes, new underclothes, socks and non-perishable food and cleaning materials are all welcome. The Centre also accepts gifts of cash and cheque donations (made payable to “Caring in Bristol”) which are welcome as soon as possible to enable the Centre to plan ahead and can be delivered to any of our churches, or contact Judith Hillman (01761 490324) or Ann Hunt (01761 490244).

Somerset remembersOver this last year I have been hearing about the different ways our communities have been coming together to mark the 100 year anniversary of Armistice. Remembrance Sunday is always a poignant time and it will have a particular resonance this year as Remembrance Sunday falls on the centenary of Armistice Day, 11 November 1918.We will remember them. We must not forget. As Bishop Tim Thornton says in the special Remembrance issue of our diocesan Manna magazine, “Re-membering does not mean going through an intellectual exercise. It means doing everything we possibly can to bring back into the reality of today the horrors of the past so that we do not make the same mistakes again.”I’ve been moved to hear the stories of how our church communities have used this landmark as an opportunity to research their own Tommies, to rededicate memorials, make spectacular poppy displays or install the Perspex Tommies of the charity, Remembered. And how communities have really come together across the generations through these acts, large and small.Wells Cathedral’s Book of Remembrance contains around 11,300 names. These are the people from Somerset and beyond, listed by community, who gave their lives in the service of their country.We will remember them.

Parish Council NotesNotes from the August & September Meeting of Publow with Pensford Parish Council.Community Award: The Parish Council Chairman was pleased to present Mr Lowe the Parish Councils Footpaths Officer with a Certificate of Recognition from the Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge. Mr Lowe had been nominated by the Parish Council for a Community Award for his outstanding contribution within the community. Member of the Public attended the meeting to seek the Parish Councils view on having stones in Pensford similar to the Millennium Stones in other Parishes. It was thought that Pensford did not have any because of restrictions on the A37. Clerk will ask Highways to confirm this. Private Land Owners may be asked for alternative locations should the A37 roadside not be allowed. The Parish Council were happy to support this idea, along with the possibility of planters or stone troughs. Litter Pick: The date for the next Litter Pick was agreed as Sunday 21st October 2018 at 9.30am. Bags and extra Litter Picks will be obtained from B&NES Affordable Housing: It was reported that 8 households had registered with Homesearch all wanting 1 bed accommodation. This shows that there is presently not the need anticipated by the Parish Council. It was agreed at present to shelve the Affordable Housing Project. Fingerposts Fundraiser: The next fundraising event will take place on Sunday 7th October 2018 at the Grange Belluton between 6pm - 8pm.
Clerks Training: Clerk will be attending training with ALCA over three consecutive months. The training is Local Council Administration 1,2,3 and is designed to also be relevant to the CILCA Portfolio. (Certificate in Local Council Administration). Variable Message Sign for Old Road: A plan for the location of the Vehicle Activated Sign proposed for Old Road had been received. The location is the best place in terms of forward visibility and it is the only accessible location for an electrical supply. PENSFORD RIVER CHEW - Mink in River: Following concerns made by a member of the public of Mink destroying wildlife along the river bank the Biodiversity Officer at the Environment Agency reported that funding and staff support for Shooting and conservation schemes have ran out and they are not aware of any initiatives at the moment for tackling Mink. They suggested contacting a Wildlife Trust to find out if they run any projects. Bristol Airport Noise Consultation: All Parish Council Members had been made aware of the consultation. Chew Valley Forum Meeting: Clerk had circulated the notes from the Forum Meeting held on Monday 23rd July. The theme of the meeting was Community Safety. There was a discussion on the Community Library. An update was given on the Great Flood Commemorative events.Donation to Tower Fund: Parish Council agreed to donate £100 to the St Thomas a Becket Tower Fund.

Local GroupsPensford Local History GroupPensford Local History Group started its new season of talks with local historian and former colliery worker Robert Bailey. He talked about Pensford Colliery, it’s history, what it was like working there, and through to its demise in 1958. Robert shared with us his marvellous collection of images, many of which he took as a young man with his new camera. He has a unique record of the site and the buildings as well as fellow workers, all of whom he could vividly recall. A really engaging, lively talk which was recorded on film, and enjoyed by all.
Our next meeting is on Monday 5th November, when Chris James and Leigh Comber will return to talk about the men whose names are on the village war memorial. They gave this talk 3 years ago when they started their research, and are repeating it with further information they have uncovered, as the Pensford Group marks the centenary of the Great War. We will meet at the Church Room at 7.30pm, £2.50 non-members. All welcome.
“We Remember It Well” is a new book of stories and memories of people in Pensford, Publow and Woollard who lived through the Great Flood of 1968. Back in the summer, several events were held commemorating the Great Flood, when the River Chew swept through the valley, causing so much devastation and havoc. As part of these events, stories and pictures were collected for exhibitions throughout the Chew Valley including Woollard and Pensford. Several contributors suggested these stories be brought together into a book, as most of the hard work had been done actually gathering them all. So, a small group was formed to collate and preserve all the memories. Beautifully produced, with pictures from 1968 as well as today, linking over 30 stories with poems and letters from residents of Pensford, Publow and Woollard.
The resultant book is called “We Remember It Well: Stories of the Great Flood of 1968 in Pensford, Publow and Woollard,” which will be available to buy for £5.00 in November.It will be launched at the Pensford Christmas Fair on Saturday 17th November at 11am in the Pensford Memorial Hall, BS39 4HW, so please do come along. Then it will be available for sale at Pensford Post Office and The Miners’ Coffee Shop and will be promoted further at Church Christmas Market, on Saturday 1st December in All Saints’ Church in Publow, BS39 4HP.Further information can be obtained by ringing Julie on 01761 490884, or emailing her at [email protected]

School Highlights
A message from Mr BartonThis week has been a good one for developing our partnerships with other schools. I gave our school development plan this year the title, “Building Partnerships, Delivering Excellence” because I believe that it is vital for any school to foster positive links with others.These partnerships are important for both children and staff. For the children, the start of the week saw footballers from Kingfisher class taking part in a collaborative match alongside pupils from the Bridge Learning Campus. This was opportunity for our children to play alongside others as the teams were mixed up with players from both schools on each side.I must thank the PTA and all who went along to the race night at the George and Dragon last week. This raised a staggering £1600! The money will be a tremendous help as we are finding the funds for new laptops for the children to use. Combined with the news this week that Mrs Millican has been successful in applying for a grant from the Medlock Trust, we are on the way to being able to order these. Enormous thanks are due to all involved. Please do continue to support the PTA as much as you can. They really do make a difference to the children’s enjoyment of their time in school as well as enhancing the equipment they have to help them learn.
Job Vacancy: Clerk to GovernorsWe are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and highly motivated administrator to the post of Clerk to the Governors. This is a key role supporting our Local Governing Body in the strategic management and development of our school.The purpose of the clerk’s role is to: • Provide advice to the governing body on governance, constitutional and procedural matters. • Provide effective administrative support to the governing body and its committees. • Ensure the governing body is properly constituted. • Manage information effectively in accordance with legal requirements.A willingness to work flexibly is required as the workload is variable - the post holder would need to attend 6 evening meetings and 5 daytime meetings per year.There is also the possibility of combining this role with the Clerk to Governor vacancies at Whitchurch Primary and Castle Primary School and any future vacancies at other primary schools.Knowledge of how schools and governing bodies operate would be an advantage along with previous experience of similar work but training can be provided.If you would like any further information, please contact the School Business Manager on 01761 490470.
