Daily Readings

Comenzamos nuestra incursión en tiempo ordinario con dos historias que hablan del llamado,

tal vez historias de llamadas muy famosas; una, en relación con Samuel y la otra, en relación

con Pedro. Aunque llamamos Ordinarios a estos domingos que están en medio de las principales

etapas de la Iglesia, son cualquier cosa menos ordinarios. La palabra ordinario se utiliza porque la Iglesia utiliza los números

ordinales (primero, segundo, tercero, etc.) para designar cada uno de estos domingos. Además, como la Navidad y la Epifanía

nos han mostrado, Dios se revela extraordinariamente en lo ordinario de nuestra vida. Como lo hizo por Samuel y Pedro en

las lecturas de hoy.

El primer domingo del tiempo ordinario suele aplicarse durante el Bautismo del Señor, en el que Dios se sumerge en nuestras

vidas y nosotros nos sumergiremos en el Reino. Así, el tiempo ordinario comienza con una inmersión en la vida misma de

Dios. Tiene que ser vivido y celebrado extraordinariamente.

Somos, cada uno, llamados por Dios. Samuel vivió su vocación (llamada) en su sueño; Pedro la experimentó por la interven-

ción de su hermano Andrés. Todos tenemos una historia diferente en la que Dios nos ha llamado a ser alguien. Una vida de

llamado (vocación) no es sólo para sacerdotes, diáconos, monjas o monjes. Es para todos, para cada cristiano.

En el Antiguo Testamento, a Samuel se le dijo que se quedara con la voz que lo llamaba. La palabra traducida como "Aquí

estoy" significa una presencia inminente en la traducción hebrea: Hinneni. "Mira, yo me quedo aquí." En el NT, Andrés y el

otro discípulo de Juan el Bautista siguen a Jesús para ver donde se queda. La palabra traducida como "quedas" juega un papel

destacado en este pasaje (está 3 veces) y se produce en todo el evangelio de Juan: menein. Tiene la sensación de permanecer

y cumplir, una presencia continua. Tenemos que persistir continuamente y quedarnos con, cumplir con, el llamado que Dios

nos ha dado, cualquiera que sea la forma en que este se manifieste.

Podría ser dicho con razón que la Biblia no es más que una serie de historias de llamados, entrelazadas para mostrar cómo

Dios obra a través de lo cotidiano de la condición humana. Él llama a la gente común a tareas extraordinarias: dirigir, servir,

predicar, enseñar, casarse, tener hijos, al amor, a morir.

El lunes, conmemoramos el fallecido Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Precisamente, él era un poderoso ejemplo de alguien llama-

do a hacer cosas extraordinarias. ¿Conocía las derivaciones de lo que ocurriría conforme el avance del movimiento de dere-

chos civiles? ¿Sabía que de hecho podría acabar con su vida? Aun así, perseveró a pesar de todo, tal vez incluso a sabiendas

de que iba a morir. Tal vez, al final del último discurso que pronunció en Memphis, Tennessee, el 3 de abril de 1968, al unir-

Tenemos que quedarnos con la vocación no importa lo fantástico o lo mundano que esta parezca. Dios puede muy bien estar

trabajando a través de nosotros. Nuestra tarea es discernir qué es lo que Dios pudiera querer de nosotros. Así que tenemos

que seguir y ver y permanecer como lo hicieron Andrés y el otro discípulo (y tal vez anunciar, como hizo Andrés a Simón

Pedro), y también tenemos que escuchar como el joven Samuel. "Habla, que tu siervo escucha." Con nuestra muy ordinaria

respuesta comienza nuestra extraordinaria inmersión en la vida misma de Dios.

Magnanimous Musings of Fr. John Robert Skeldon

We begin our foray into Ordinary Time with two call stories, perhaps quite famous call

stories; one, concerning Samuel and the other, concerning Peter. Though we call these

Sundays between the major seasons of the Church year ordinary, they are anything but

ordinary. The word ordinary is used because the Church uses the ordinal numbers (first, second,

third, etc.) to designate each of these Sundays. In addition, as Christmas and Epiphany have shown us, God reveals himself extraordi-

narily in the ordinary of our lives. So, he did for Samuel and Peter in today’s readings.

The first Sunday of Ordinary Time is usually given over to the Baptism of the Lord, in which God is immersed into our lives

and we become immersed into the Kingdom. Thus, Ordinary time begins with an immersion into God’s very life. It has to be lived

and celebrated extraordinarily.

We are each called by God. Samuel experienced his vocation (calling) in his sleep; Peter experienced his by the intervention

of his brother Andrew. All of us have a different story in which God has called us to be someone. A life of being called (vocation) is

not just for priests, deacons, nuns or monks. It is for every, every Christian.

In the OT, Samuel was told to stay with the voice beckoning him. The word translated as “Here I am” connotes an immediacy

of presence in the Hebrew: hinneni. “Look, I am staying here.” In the NT, Andrew and the other disciple of John the Baptist follow

Jesus to see where he is staying. The word translated as “to stay” plays a prominent role in this passage (3 times it occurs) and through-

out John’s gospel: menein. It has the sense of remain and abide, a continuous presence. We have to continually persist and stay with,

abide with, the calling God has given us, whatever way it is manifesting itself.

It could be rightly said that the Bible is nothing more than a series of call stories linked together to show how God works

through the ordinariness of the human condition. He calls ordinary people to extraordinary tasks: to lead, to serve, to preach, to teach,

to marry, to have children, to love, to die.

On Monday, we commemorate the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was a powerful example of precisely someone called to

do extraordinary things. Did he know the ramifications of what would happen as the civil rights movement gained steam? Did he

know that it could very well take his life? He still persevered through it all, perhaps even knowing that he was going to die. Perhaps,

the end of the last speech he gave at Memphis, Tennessee on April 3, 1968, joining the protest of the sanitation workers of the city the

day before he was struck down by the assassin’s bullet says it best:

“Well, I don't know what will happen now; we've got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn't matter to with me now,

because I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life–longevity has its place. But I'm

not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over, and

I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Prom-

ised Land. And so I'm happy tonight; I'm not worried about anything; I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the

coming of the Lord.”

We have to stay with the vocation no matter how fantastic or how mundane it may seem. God may very well be working

through us. Our task is to discern what it is God may be wanting from us. So we have to follow and see and stay as Andrew and the

other disciple did (and perhaps announce, as did Andrew to Simon Peter), and we also have to listen like young Samuel. “Speak, for

your servant is listening.” With our very ordinary response begins our extraordinary immersion into the very life of God.

Joy of the Gospel Classes by Fr. John

Robert Starting January 29

Pope Francis has been taking the world

by storm since his election in March,

2013. One way to begin to understand

him and his vision for the church is his

first document as pope: The Joy of the

Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium).

Fr. John Robert will lead a reading and

discussion about this most substantial

papal document that we have seen in a

long time. Beginning Thursday, Janu-

ary 29th at 7 pm and repeating on

Friday, January 30th at 9:30 am, the members of the par -

ish will have the opportunity to read, discuss

and interiorize The Joy of the Gospel. We will meet weekly

for six weeks.

You are encouraged to purchase a copy of the document for

yourselves. In particular, there are two versions that are quite

good. The first is by The Word Among Us Press. It has good

study questions with it. The second is the Image edition with a

foreword and afterword by Frs. Robert Barron and James Mar-

tin. They are easily available from Amazon.com, Barnes and

Noble, or other on-line book sellers. The church will also have

books available for sale in the office before the classes for

$10 (exact change please or check).

Reading The Joy of the Gospel is another way for us as a com-

munity to live magnanimously and extraordinarily the Christ-

mas message even in the Ordinary Time of our lives. All are

invited!

CHRISTMAS BAZAAR AND BAKE SALE

This parish event was a huge success because your

most generous support. $7,337.50 is the grand total.

The Bazaar/Bake Sale brought in $4,013.60. $413.00

was realized from the Silent Auction. And The Taste

of St. Bart’s Cookbook sales amounted to $2,912.90.

A limited number of cookbooks is still available for

$15.00 each. They make excellent birthday and bridal

shower gifts.

Sacrament of Baptism (newborns - age 6): Parents requesting the Sacrament of Baptism should be either living within par-ish boundaries or be registered in the parish. Parents and godparents are expected to attend a baptism class for an infant to be bap-tized. Parents are required to bring a signed photocopy of the child’s state-registered birth certificate to the baptism class. Godpar-ents who are not registered at St. Bartholomew must provide a letter from their parish which verifies that they meet the godparent requirements. All paperwork must be turned into the office before scheduling your child’s baptism date. The next class will be 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 12th in the church hall. Call the office to sign up for this class. Parents also need to call the office if you need to use the nursery while attending this class. Appeal This Weekend January 17-18, 2015 Fr. Bob Thames, a Fort Worth Diocesan priest and steward of

mission work in Cabezas, Bolivia, will be visiting with parish-

ioners of St. Bartholomew at the Masses this Saturday, Janu-

ary 17, and Sunday, January 18, 2015.

By the grace of God the efforts of Fr. Thames in Bolivia have

been richly blessed. Providing for the education of less fortu-

nate children at Nuestra Señora Del Carmen School is the mis-

sion of Educate the Children Bolivia, a program of the Diocese

of Fort Worth Mission Council.

Through the generosity of parishioners from the Diocese and

friends throughout the United States, there have been many

improvements at the school. The campus has grown , as has

the quality of education. Providing for the students, many who

board at the school, continues to be a daunting task as it in-

volves not only meeting their educational needs but also their

physical needs.
