From the Rector...Greetings in the name of ChristJoan and I were on holiday after Easter, we had looked forward with anticipation to having a break. It was a great opportunity to relax, to be refreshed and renewed, we walked and we talked.

Jesus had walked and talked with his disciples during his earthly ministry and he walked and talked with them following his resurrection. During that time, he spoke to them about the coming of the Holy Spirit. He told them to wait in Jerusalem until they had been clothed with power from on high. Then Jesus ascended into heaven and the waiting period began.

The disciples probably looked forward with anticipation for the promise which Jesus made to be fulfilled, although that anticipation was tinged with a degree of uncertainty about what was going to happen. The disciples had to wait 10 days for the promise to be fulfilled, and then something amazing and dramatic happened.

In Acts 2 we are told that the disciples were all in one place. ‘Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.  All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit …..’

When we came back from holidays everything was much the same, but after the day of Pentecost nothing was the same. The people in Jerusalem were amazed and perplexed by what was happening. Then Peter stood up to explain, this was the fulfilment of what had been foretold in the scriptures (the Old

Testament) and the fulfilment of what Jesus had said was going to happen. This was the same person who prior to Jesus’ crucifixion had denied knowing Jesus. (Luke 22:54-62)

Then Peter declared that Jesus’ death wasn’t an accident, but was part of God’s plan of salvation for those who put their trust in Jesus. He told the people that Jesus’ resurrection confirmed his identity as the Son of God, and that Jesus had ascended so that the Holy Spirit would come in power. He also told them that people need to be forgiven for their sin and that those who repent of their sin and put their trust in Jesus can be forgiven and know the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in their lives. We are told that three thousand repented of their sin and put their faith in Jesus that day.

People’s lives were changed and transformed, and God is still in the business of changing and transforming lives, restoring and renewing lives, through the power of the Holy Spirit, as we respond to him.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.Break me, melt me,mould me, fill me.Spirit of the living God,fall afresh on me.

Roderic

Church Fete - Saturday 18th June Plans for our 26th Annual Fete continue to go well. The Fete Committee are doing their part but for the event to be successful we need your help.

Alison Adams along with Tracy Weir will be looking after personnel issues. On the day of the Fete upwards of 250 parishioners are needed to staff the various stalls and other duties. They will be writing out shortly to our key stall organisers who will in turn enlist the help of various individuals to help staff their stall. If you are asked and are free, please say yes! We would like the completed forms returned to Alison, Tracy or the Parish Office as soon as possible. If you are free on the day and would be willing to help but are not listed as a fete helper please contact the Parish Office. If you are new to the Parish this is a great way to meet new friends and take part in a hectic but very rewarding day!

The Market Garden stall organised by Nan White and Margaret Jones would like to hear from any of you who can help supply chutneys and jams.

Now is the time to identify those items in your garage, roof space and homes which you no longer need. I will outline in next month’s article about when they can be left in the Church Hall. Please note we can’t take old televisions, mattresses or very large wardrobes or units.

We did exceptionally well last year at the second hand clothes stall as the ladies almost doubled their previous year’s takings and we were also able to sell the remaining items as cash for clobber raising yet further funds. Please keep your unwanted clothes, shoes, bags, curtains and bedding. We can’t take duvets.

Many thanks to those who assisted in re-potting plants and a special word of thanks to those who have taken responsibility for bringing on the plants at their homes. If you can help nearer the time with plants etc for the stall Ann Lay would be delighted to hear from you.

Boxes are now in both churches for the donation of items of groceries. Please ensure any items donated are within their sell by date. Please give generously.

That’s all for now but please try and keep the 18th June free!

Robert, Fete Chairman

5th May: Ascension DayThursday 5th May isn’t just the date of this year’s Assembly Elections, it’s also Ascension Day – the day the risen Christ ascended to heaven. Jesus had been crucified on Good Friday, He was raised to life again on Easter Sunday and then He ascended to heaven 40 days later.

During those 40 days the Risen Christ appeared again and again to His disciples. The Gospels give us little of Christ’s teachings and deeds during those 40 days. Jesus was seen by numerous disciples: on the road to Emmaus, by the Sea of Galilee, in houses, etc. He strengthened and encouraged his disciples, and at last opened their eyes to all that the Scriptures had promised about the Messiah.

Jesus told them that as the Father had sent Him, He was now going to send them - to all corners of the earth, as his witnesses; but he also told them to wait in Jerusalem until they received the gift the Father had promised, until the Holy Spirit came upon them.

On the day of His Ascension, Jesus had led His disciples out to the vicinity of Bethany, there He lifted up His hands - and blessed them. (Luke 24:50-53, Acts 1:6-11)

As Christmas began the story of Jesus’ life on earth, so Ascension Day completes it, with his return to his Father in heaven. Jesus’ last act on earth was to bless his disciples and they had to wait ten days until they received the gift the Father had promised, until the Holy Spirit came on the disciples on the Day of Pentecost. (Acts 2:1-21)

Jesus’ Ascension also marked the beginning of another waiting period. After Jesus’ Ascension the angels, the men dressed in white, said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.’

Be sure to have put your trust in him as Saviour and live as those who are waiting for his return!

‘Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.’ (Psalm 42:7) The writer of this Psalm paints an incredible picture of deep water responding to something equally deep in a way that is almost overwhelming. It comes in the context of a deep longing for more of God – As the deer pants for the water so my soul longs for you.

Oxygen?Humanity was designed for a relationship with God. As our bodies crave oxygen, so our spirits crave God. We all have a passionate desire to know God and to communicate with him, but ever since the Fall in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3) we have been guilty of sin, and nothing but repentance – by humbling ourselves before the cross of Christ – will ever bring us back into fellowship with him.
