andfearandremembersthem,hisknowledgemeansthatnomatterhowaloneIfeelHeisthere,heishereandhecomfortsandholdsus.Buttheyalsochallengeme,tothereforetrusthimwiththosefearsandanxieties,withtheuncertaintiesthatwefaceandaskhimtohelpustolivewithinthoseanxietiesandonceagaintoNindwaystolive.TheseversesremindmeofGod'slove,persistenceandcareandwillbeastrue

tomorrowastheywereyesterday,andforthatIgivethanksandenjoythehopethattruthbrings. Soaswemoveintoautumnandwinter,continuetoadjusttoguidelines,regulationsandexpectationsmaywerememberGod'sloveandcareeachandeveryday.

Hesharedthenewswithhisstaffteamearliertodayand, ina lettertothediocese,saidhefaceda“challenging”fewmonthsashebeginsacourseofchemotherapy.

He wrote: “This has been a challenging year for all of us and theCoronavirushasmeantthatmanyofthethingswehadplannedforthisyearhaveeitherhadtochangeorhavebeenputonhold.“I amwritingnow to informyou that I tooam facinga challenging few

months.“I have not been entirely well in recent weeks and on Friday I was

diagnosedwithacutemyeloidleukaemia.Iamreallygratefultothedoctorswho I have been seeing and for the speed in which treatment is to beprovided.“I have informedmy colleagueson theBishop’s Staff and I amconTident

thateverythinginthediocesewillcontinuetorunsmoothlywhilstIstepbackfor a while. Jane and I have a wonderful family who have been verysupportiveandwearegratefultoallourfamilyandfriendsfortheirsupport,encouragementandprayers. I shallcontinuetopray foryouallandwouldbegratefulforyourprayers.“The psalm at Morning Prayer today had the words ‘The Lord is my

strengthandmyshield;inhimmyhearttrusts.’AsIputmytrustinthehospitalstaff,whoIknowwillprovidemewiththemostwonderfulcare,IamalsotrustingintheLord,knowingthathetoowillwatchovermeinthedaysahead.”Bishop Ruth, who began a period of annual leave and sabbatical just two

weeksago,willreturnatthebeginningofSeptemberandwillbeinregulartouchwithstaffuntilthen.

Shesaid:“IrealisethenewsofBishopPeter’sillnesswillcomeasashocktousallandwesendhim,Janeandthefamilyourloveandourcommitmenttoprayforhimdaily.Wetrust intheGodwhoholdshiminthepalmofHishandandwhoseloveisunquenchable.

“IwasplanningathreemonthstudyleavetobegininAugusthoweverIwillbedeferringthisfornow.MayBishopPeterandallofusknowthepeaceofGodwhichpassesallunderstandingandmayitkeepourheartsandmindsintheknowledgeofHislove,foreachofus,daily.”

As Bishop Peter begins his treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, theDiocesanHealingAdvisoryGroupoffertheprayerbelow,startingwiththewordsfrom Psalm 28 that Bishop Peter quoted as he shared the news of his illness.There isbothpeaceandpower inprayingtogether–prayingwithandforeachotherandofferingourhopesandfearstotheGodwhowebelieveispresentinallthings.

OLord,youareourstrengthandourshield.Yourlovesustainsusthroughallthechallengesweface.Weplaceintoyourhandsallwhoarefacingchallenges,

Hesharedthenewswithhisstaffteamearliertodayand, ina lettertothediocese,saidhefaceda“challenging”fewmonthsashebeginsacourseofchemotherapy.

He wrote: “This has been a challenging year for all of us and theCoronavirushasmeantthatmanyofthethingswehadplannedforthisyearhaveeitherhadtochangeorhavebeenputonhold.“I amwritingnow to informyou that I tooam facinga challenging few

months.“I have not been entirely well in recent weeks and on Friday I was

diagnosedwithacutemyeloidleukaemia.Iamreallygratefultothedoctorswho I have been seeing and for the speed in which treatment is to beprovided.“I have informedmy colleagueson theBishop’s Staff and I amconTident

I shallcontinuetopray foryouallandwouldbegratefulforyourprayers.“The psalm at Morning Prayer today had the words ‘The Lord is my

strengthandmyshield;inhimmyhearttrusts.’AsIputmytrustinthehospitalstaff,whoIknowwillprovidemewiththemostwonderfulcare,IamalsotrustingintheLord,knowingthathetoowillwatchovermeinthedaysahead.”Bishop Ruth, who began a period of annual leave and sabbatical just two

weeksago,willreturnatthebeginningofSeptemberandwillbeinregulartouchwithstaffuntilthen.

Shesaid:“IrealisethenewsofBishopPeter’sillnesswillcomeasashocktousallandwesendhim,Janeandthefamilyourloveandourcommitmenttoprayforhimdaily.Wetrust intheGodwhoholdshiminthepalmofHishandandwhoseloveisunquenchable.

“IwasplanningathreemonthstudyleavetobegininAugusthoweverIwillbedeferringthisfornow.MayBishopPeterandallofusknowthepeaceofGodwhichpassesallunderstandingandmayitkeepourheartsandmindsintheknowledgeofHislove,foreachofus,daily.”

Mothers’ Union (MU) today works to serve families in all forms withoutprejudicenomattertheirsituation.Thisincludesthefamiliesofpeoplewhohavebeen incarcerated and now Nind themselves having to engage with the prisonsystem.

Prison work is variedMU’sprisonworkacrossBritainandIrelandtakesvarious forms.However, themain aim is clear, to keep families together. It is not simple work, it is ever-changing. The politics and processes within the network of domestic prisonsmakeupaconstantlyshiftinglandscape. Asprisongovernorsarereplacedandnewdirectivescomeintoforce,thosewhoworkwiththeresidentsofprisonsandtheirfamiliesmustadapttheirapproachtosecurecontinuedaccess.

MU members provide support to those visiting prisons by holding shortcourses onwhat they can expect from a Nirst visit. This is essential in relaxingvisitorssothattheycangetthemostoutoftheirtimewiththeprisonresidents.They also hold workshops which involvemany of the services that come intocontactwiththefamilies.Bycollectingstoriesfromparentsandchildrenalreadywithin the system, they are able to highlight ongoing day to day issues, andprovidemoretargetedsupport.

Once a month at Onley prison in Coventry there are Family Days when amaximum of twenty prisoners have their families come for a few hours. Theprisonerscanplaywiththeirchildrenandcuddlethemwhichisnotallowedonnormalvisits.CoventryDioceseMUpayforbuffetfoodattheseFamilyDays.

In addition to the family days, at Christmas Coventry MU members buypresentsordonatenewtoysforvisitingchildrentohaveapresentfromFatherChristmas(whoisoneoftheofNicersdressedup).Thishelpsthechildrentoformpositiveassociationswiththeoverallexperience.

InLowNewton,anallwomenprison inDurham,the focus isonsupportingthe prison residents. MU actually holds services for them where they canparticipateinprayers,readingsandhymns.ThisisfollowedbyageneralupdateonMUinformationandacupofteaandachat,wheremorepastoralsupportisprovided.

MU members put together packs for when they are coming up for theirrelease,containingtoiletriesandotherhouseholdessentials.TheworkofMUinLow Newton is key in building trust and encouraging people who have beenthroughtheprisonsystemonce,toworkhardnottoreoffend.ThemainaimissupporongFamiliesAs can be seen from the activities in the prisons outlinedhere, prisonwork isvariedbuthasprotectingfamiliesatitscore.Unfortunately,muchofthisprisonwork is on hold at the moment due to necessary restrictions to prevent thespread of COVID-19. As soon as they are able to, members up and down thecountrywillbecontinuingthisvitaleffort.

I am writing this whilst receiving treatment in hospital,althoughbythetimeyoureadthis,IhopethatImaybebackhome having completed my Nirst course of chemotherapy.

TheNirstthingIwanttosay,andIamsurethisisechoedby so many, is what wonderful treatment and care I havereceived from everyone in the hospital. Their kindness,concernandprofessionalismarebeyondwords.

Whatisanunusualexperienceformehowever,isthatIhavenotbeenallowedtoleavemyroomandthedoorsandwindowshavebeenkeptNirmlyshut. LookingoutofmywindowandcraningmyneckupwardsIamjustabletogetaglimpseoftheskyoutside. WithoutthatIwouldnotknowwhetheritwassunnyorcloudyorrainingoutside.NotthatIaminanywaycomplaining.Iamsafeandreceivingthebest care imaginable. It is also importantwhatevermayhappen tokeepasenseofproportion. IvividlyrecallhearingTerryWaitespeakwhenhecametothedioceseononeoccasion. It isunimaginablewhathewentthroughinthose1763 days in Beirut – the Nirst four years of which were spent in solitaryconNinement,blindfolded, inabasementroomwithnowindows,withnobooksorpapers,chainedtoaradiatorandsleepingontheNloor. Hiscourageandfaithare remarkable andhave inspired somanypeople since. I rememberhimoncebeinginterviewedandbeingaskedwhatthehappiestmomentofhislifewas,onethat he would cherish forever. He replied: ‘When my blindfold was taken offduring my release in November 1991. I’d been in the dark – in a basement orblindfolded- foryears.Forthe Tirst time in Tiveyears Isawthesky, thegrass, thecolours,andIfeltthewindonmyface.’

Terry Waite is also very clear about how the prayers of so many otherssupportedhim through thoseyears. As Iwrite I amalsoveryawareof all theprayers that have and are being said for me. That is both humbling andencouragingandonceIamgettingoutandaboutagain, I lookforwardtobeingabletothankyoupersonally.

Once a month at Onley prison in Coventry there are Family Days when amaximum of twenty prisoners have their families come for a few hours. Theprisonerscanplaywiththeirchildrenandcuddlethemwhichisnotallowedonnormalvisits.CoventryDioceseMUpayforbuffetfoodattheseFamilyDays.

In addition to the family days, at Christmas Coventry MU members buypresentsordonatenewtoysforvisitingchildrentohaveapresentfromFatherChristmas(whoisoneoftheofNicersdressedup).Thishelpsthechildrentoformpositiveassociationswiththeoverallexperience.

InLowNewton,anallwomenprison inDurham,the focus isonsupportingthe prison residents. MU actually holds services for them where they canparticipateinprayers,readingsandhymns.ThisisfollowedbyageneralupdateonMUinformationandacupofteaandachat,wheremorepastoralsupportisprovided.

MU members put together packs for when they are coming up for theirrelease,containingtoiletriesandotherhouseholdessentials.TheworkofMUinLow Newton is key in building trust and encouraging people who have beenthroughtheprisonsystemonce,toworkhardnottoreoffend.ThemainaimissupporongFamiliesAs can be seen from the activities in the prisons outlinedhere, prisonwork isvariedbuthasprotectingfamiliesatitscore.Unfortunately,muchofthisprisonwork is on hold at the moment due to necessary restrictions to prevent thespread of COVID-19. As soon as they are able to, members up and down thecountrywillbecontinuingthisvitaleffort.

I am writing this whilst receiving treatment in hospital,althoughbythetimeyoureadthis,IhopethatImaybebackhome having completed my Nirst course of chemotherapy.

TheNirstthingIwanttosay,andIamsurethisisechoedby so many, is what wonderful treatment and care I havereceived from everyone in the hospital. Their kindness,concernandprofessionalismarebeyondwords.

Whatisanunusualexperienceformehowever,isthatIhavenotbeenallowedtoleavemyroomandthedoorsandwindowshavebeenkeptNirmlyshut. LookingoutofmywindowandcraningmyneckupwardsIamjustabletogetaglimpseoftheskyoutside. WithoutthatIwouldnotknowwhetheritwassunnyorcloudyorrainingoutside.NotthatIaminanywaycomplaining.Iamsafeandreceivingthebest care imaginable. It is also importantwhatevermayhappen tokeepasenseofproportion. IvividlyrecallhearingTerryWaitespeakwhenhecametothedioceseononeoccasion. It isunimaginablewhathewentthroughinthose1763 days in Beirut – the Nirst four years of which were spent in solitaryconNinement,blindfolded, inabasementroomwithnowindows,withnobooksorpapers,chainedtoaradiatorandsleepingontheNloor. Hiscourageandfaithare remarkable andhave inspired somanypeople since. I rememberhimoncebeinginterviewedandbeingaskedwhatthehappiestmomentofhislifewas,onethat he would cherish forever. He replied: ‘When my blindfold was taken offduring my release in November 1991. I’d been in the dark – in a basement orblindfolded- foryears.Forthe Tirst time in Tiveyears Isawthesky, thegrass, thecolours,andIfeltthewindonmyface.’

Terry Waite is also very clear about how the prayers of so many otherssupportedhim through thoseyears. As Iwrite I amalsoveryawareof all theprayers that have and are being said for me. That is both humbling andencouragingandonceIamgettingoutandaboutagain, I lookforwardtobeingabletothankyoupersonally.

From July, BishopRuthwill be apatron for the international development charity,SendaCow.Thecharity,basednearBath,helpsfamiliesinruralAfricatogrowtheirown futures.Tomark thisnewappointment,BishopRuth is callingonchurches tojoinSendaCowintheirHarvestcelebrations,on-lineoroutside,duringSeptemberorOctober.
