Many of our parishioners were not alive 40 years ago. It was a different world back then. Here are some things that happened in the world of 1979: Oil spills polluted ocean waters in Atlan!c and Gulf of Mexico (Jan. 1, June 8, July 21). Ohio agrees to pay $675,000 to fami-lies of dead and injured in Kent State Uni-versity shoo!ngs (Jan. 4). Vietnam and Vietnam-backed Cambodian insurgents announce fall of Phnom Penh, Cambodi-an capital, and collapse of Pol Pot regime (Jan. 7). Shah leaves Iran a"er year of turmoil (Jan. 16); revolu!onary forces under Muslim leader, Ayatollah Khomei-ni, take over (Feb. 1 et seq.). Nuclear power plant accident at Three Mile Is-land, Pa., releases radia!on (March 28). Conserva!ves win Bri!sh elec!on; Mar-garet Thatcher new prime minister (May 3). Carter and Brezhnev sign SALT II agreement (June 14). Nicaraguan presi-dent Gen. Anastasio Somoza Debayle resigns and flees to Miami (July 17); San-dinistas form government (July 19). Earl Mountba%en of Burma, 79, Bri!sh World War II hero, and three others killed by blast on fishing boat off Irish coast (Aug. 27); two I.R.A. members accused (Aug. 30). Iranian militants seize U.S. embassy in Tehran and hold hostages (Nov. 4). Soviet invasion of Afghanistan s!rs world protests (Dec. 27). According to the Bu-reau of Labor Sta!s!cs consumer price index, prices today are 245.88% high-er than average prices throughout 1979, meaning the real value of a dollar de-creased. In other words, $100 in 1979 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $345.88 in 2019, a difference of $245.88 over 40 years. Forty years ago this weekend, July 14, 1979, I was ordained a priest in at St. Mary’s Church in Fort Madison, Iowa. It was a hot, sticky July day and there was no air-conditioning in the

Church - the fans were going wild - and that kept the air moving and the ceremony tol-erable. The Holy Spirit was also moving that day as I said yes to an amazing adventure. These past forty years I have officiated at countless marriag-es, baptisms, and funerals. I have been privileged to allow Christ to use my voice to pro-nounce absolution to many coming to the Lord for for-giveness. I have celebrated the Mass so many times that I can recite those words in my sleep, yet every time it is as awesome as my first time ... and I am still in awe of the mys-tery that I am allowed to em-brace. Looking at the pictures on the next page I ask, “Who is that bald headed, old guy with glasses and why do the folks allow this old man to carry their babies! I jokingly say, “I am not getting old, I am old!” No joke. I do want to take this oppor-tunity to thank all of you for your prayers, understanding and kindness to me. All my as-signments have been wonder-ful throughout these forty years. Also, I know I need to ask for-giveness for those times I have been harsh or my actions have not portrayed the love of Christ whose life I am called to re-flect. Thanks to so many who reflect Christ to me and contin-ue to love me in my weakness. I continue to rely on your sup-port and that of Mother Mary and the saints. Draw me more deeply into your love, Lord.

Formation for the (permanent) diaconate is divided into three phases: inquiry, aspirancy, and candidacy. Candidacy is a three year process that focuses on the intellectual, spiritual, pastoral and human dimensions of diaconal ministry. Please keep Ryan and the other deacon candidates in your prayers as they continue on this journey of preparation and formation.

Congratulations, Ryan! Congratulations to parishioner Ryan Burchett, and to the seven other men of the diocese in the deacon formation program! After completing two years of aspirancy, Bishop Zinkula has called them to Candidacy for Holy Orders. The Rite of Candidacy will be celebrated on July 14th at St. John Church in Burlington.
