Dear Friends of St. Louise, Next week our parish will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of Seattle. It began 100 years ago as the “Seattle Council of Catholic Women,” focused on serving the needs of poor mothers and children, especially single mothers. Later they also provided adop-tion services. Similar organizations were formed in other Western Washington cities, and in 1936 Catho-lic Charities was formed to coordinate the administration of all the various works of charity in the diocese. Today in Western Washington these many ministries are better known as Catholic Community Services (CCS) and Catholic Housing Services (CHS). Most parishes in the Archdiocese will celebrate the Cen-tennial sometime during the Advent season. At St. Louise, I will preach, and show a brief video, at all the Masses next week about the importance of this milestone for us, as people who are dedicated to serving the poor. Most of you already know that besides the state itself, CCS and CHS constitute the largest social service agency in the State of Washington. Their work, together with the work of St. Vincent de Paul, the many food banks and clothing banks and other great works of charity that happen in parishes across our Arch-diocese, makes for a substantial contribution in helping to lift the burden of poverty from the shoulders of individuals, families and society. This Centennial is not just about CCS/CHS, it also is about helping all of us to be more aware of the great work for the poor that Catholics are doing in Western Washington. As the saying goes, it is one of our best-kept secrets! We should all be very proud of this work – and we should be eager to join in supporting it. You will notice in the bulletin an envelope for a contribution to CCS/CHS. My pledge will be my Christmas gift to my family and friends, instead of buying them things they do not really need. Could you consider doing the same? If you were thinking of giving me a Christmas gift, I would be most pleased if you chose to make a gift to CCS/CHS in my name. Jesus gave us the mandate: “Truly I tell, you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Mt. 25:40). Our participation in the Church’s many ministries to the poor is our call as faithful disciples! Thank you for your support of the Centennial Appeal for the Poor. With Advent joy,

Fr. Gary Zender

Padre Gary Zender

Activities and Events

Forever Young – A Group for 55+ and/or Retired Advent is here! During December we don’t hold our general meeting. Rather, like Mary, we prayerfully ponder and await the Lord’s coming anew. Our next general gathering will be Wednesday, January 23, 2019. Till then may the peace of Advent and the joy of Christmas fill your hearts.

Interest Groups:

Knitting Group: The Knitting Group will have you in stitches once again, and soon! The group meets the fourth Thursday of the month, coming up on January 24 at 9:45AM in the Elbert Library. Please contact Shirley Johnson 425-746-1161 with questions. Till then, keep knitting! Let every stitch be a prayer. “Lord knit us all closer in relationship to you and each other.” Book Club: Our next meeting will be on Friday, January 25, at 9:45AM in the St. Mother Teresa Room. We will discuss “The Gentleman from Moscow” by Amor Towels. Share a book, write a new chapter of friendship! If you have questions, please contact Chris Boldizsar, 425-999-0738. Scrabble Group: Caution, this may be a wordy one! The Scrabble group is eager to meet and resume the fun! A start date is still pending. Watch the bulletin for details and remember to keep your word! Please contact Kathy Reifers at 425-746-6457. Let’s Eat Out!: The “LEO” (Let’s Eat Out) is in for a surprise! Our own Kathy Reifers will be hosting a Christmas Brunch! The date is Friday, December 14, at 10:30AM. The gathering will be a potluck, so please RSVP to Kathy at 425-746-6457. Forever Young Outings Garden d’Lights: December 5, 2018, at 4PM. We will carpool to the Bellevue Botanical Garden where you will see over half a million sparkling lights formed into the whimsical shapes of plants, flowers, birds, animals, and cascading waterfalls set amid the natural beauty of the Garden. Following the tour, we will meet at Pogacha Restaurant for a delicious meal. Contact Christine Boldizsar 425-999–0738 [email protected]

Grief Support Group 3rd Tuesday of the month, 7PM in the Parish Office!

Come join us Tuesday, December 18, from 7-8:30PM in the Parish Office. This group is a safe and sacred place to be heard without comment or advice giving. We practice being present to each other in our pain, accepting ourselves and each other as we are, and trusting that our listening hearts offer healing and blessing. Loss and the experience of grief is not limited to death of a loved one. Loss of a marriage, job, dream, relation-ship, health and pets all result in grief and pain. Hope and heal-ing are the pathway forward. Come and experience healing! Immediate help is available! If you are suffering grief for any reason and would like immediate support, please call David Gehrig (425-214-5466) for help. Listening ears, caring hearts and experienced volunteers are available to walk with you along this painful road from loss to new life.

Funeral Ministry "Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy” (Lk. 21:34)

A little too much to eat and drink?! What better way to keep from becoming spiritually (or physically) drowsy than to serve others? Come and volunteer with the St. Louise funeral ministry! Contact David Gehrig at 425-214-5466 or [email protected]

Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) CRHP is a long-running St. Louise Parish program aimed at sup-porting our parishioners with their continued growth in the Chris-tian life and helping them to find a greater sense of intimacy and connection within such a large parish community. It was estab-lished with everyone in mind – literally with the goal of every adult parishioner joining in a Renewal Weekend Retreat. Next retreats are: WOMEN - April 27 & 28, 2019 and MEN - May 18 & 19, 2019.

Advent Giving Tree

The Advent Giving Tree is up and filled with tags to help us answer the call to stewardship and to help those less fortunate in our local communities. Please take one or more tags, pur-chase what is requested and return the unwrapped gift with its tag to the Giving Tree (or the Parish Office, if you don’t come at the weekend Mass times) no later than December 9. If you are purchasing a gift card or cards, please indicate the dollar amount of the card. Check out purchasing the cards the St. Louise Charger Cards: these will be available for purchase after many of the masses. Help support those in need and St. Louise School at the same time. Thank you for your generosity and for making this holiday season special.

St. Louise Charger Cards

Charger Cards is a scrip fundraiser that our parish and school partici-pate in year-round. St. Louise buys gift cards at a discount from a sup-plier and offers them for sale at face value. The difference in cost is what St. Louise keeps as a profit for our parish school. The average profit is $5 for every $100 of gift card. This is a unique fundraiser because you buy gift cards for

stores that you already use. It is a rare fundraiser that doesn’t ask you to buy anything you don't already buy.

The idea is that families buy groceries and gas (or spend at restaurants or other stores) that are in their normal budget. Instead of paying with a check or cash at the store, you pay with a gift card that you purchased from St. Louise. This way St. Louise School earns a small percentage of every normal purchase you make. Charger Cards are available outside the church today. There are hundreds of stores to select from. It's guaranteed that there is at least one store you are planning to shop at this week whose gift card you could first buy from St. Louise. Charger Cards are typically available between Masses on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. Thank you for your support of St. Louise School through your pur-chase of Charger Cards.

Jesus Christ, our Universal King, gifts humanity with peace, love and hope. As we begin Advent and journey into the New Church Year, we are called to be good stewards of our many gifts and to be people of peace, hope and love. What resolutions do we make this New Church Year? How will we spend our time, talents and treasure in serving God? Will we live to give others peace, hope and love? Jesus is waiting for us in the Blessed Sacrament, to guide us through making good resolutions and living them. Let’s approach Jesus with faith and submissive hearts. Join us at the December 7, 2018, First Friday Eucharistic Adoration. Come at your own time or as a family. Bring friends and children!!! Just come, Jesus is waiting. Let’s pray for peace and an end to violence.

Individual Adoration - Following 9AM Mass – 5:30PM Children-led Rosary for world peace – 5:30 PM Benediction – 6 PM

Advent Eucharistic Adoration, 4-7PM in the Chapel Come to Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament - Eucharistic Adoration on the Thursday evenings of Advent, December 6, 13, and 20 from 4-7PM in the Parish Center Chapel. All are invited to attend and deepen our hunger for communion with Christ and the whole Church.

During Exposition - Eucharistic Adoration someone must always be present with the Blessed Body of Christ. While all are welcome and encouraged to “drop

in” anytime you wish during Adoration, two people are needed each hour to commit to being present. Please sign up for an hour at www.goo.gl/qR2zv4 or use your phone to scan the QR code. It will take you to a Sign-Up Genius page – you can pick as many hours as you wish – and, if the slots are full, just come to Ado-ration and pray with Jesus.

Leaders are also needed! A leader must be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EM). At 4PM the opening leader displays the Blessed Sacrament and lights the candles. At 7PM the closing leader reposes the Blessed Sacrament, extinguishes the candles and locks the door. Leaders can also sign up using the link provided www.goo.gl/qR2zv4. There will be a short training for leaders on December 2 at 12:15PM in the chapel to make sure you have everything you need to be successful.

"The Called to Serve as Christ campaign is an expression of our deep gratitude to those who have gone before us, especially our bishops, priests, and religious sisters, for the tireless ways they have lived out their vocations for the Lord and for us." - J. PETER SARTAIN, ARCHBISHOP OF SEATTLE

In Gratitude for…

My parents Bob & Barbara Kelly-founding members of the parish. Their commitment to the church and the commu-nity of St. Louise have been a lifelong ex-ample for our family! (They are currently

members of St. Monica's on Mercer island)

All the blessings we receive, for all the things we have AND, for all "the things WE DO NOT HAVE", for the gift of compassion and love, and for the gift of life.

All God has blest us with this past year. The St. Louise parish staff, who have all - from A (bbott) to Z(ender) - made me welcome and cared for me like family since the day I (or they) came to the parish. The St Louise parish and the Catholic Church for all it has done for us!

I want to partner in our mission to Ignite Faith and Witness God’s Love at St. Louise because…

We believe that humanity could be better if we learn to be more loving and compassionate with one another.

We are a community church not an individual church.
