Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 8, 2019
Fill us at daybreak with your kindness, that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days. — Psalm 90:14
POST-SUMMER CHALLENGES With any luck, summer delights will continue a while past last weekend’s Labor Day: refreshing recreation (with maybe an occasional swim) or enjoyable relaxation on the deck (with tasty outdoor grilling). Truth is, for some of us, this year’s Labor Day came way too ear-ly. With many schools back in session for a while already, mealtimes and driving schedules needed read-justment to coordinate youth sports with adult commit-ments. Some religious education and parish programs re-sumed, too. No surprise, then, that this weekend’s scrip-tures sound a little like post-summer challenges. For in-stance, Wisdom reminds us that believers in God can nev-er be content with “timid deliberations” and “unsure plans.” Paul challenges longtime friend and follower Phi-lemon to “let the good you do be voluntary.” Jesus in-structs “great crowds” traveling with him—including us—on three things necessary for all true disciples to accom-plish. On this early autumn weekend, our scriptures de-scribe disciples’ lifelong labors. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co

The devotion to the Eucharist is the most noble because it has God as its object; it is the most profitable for salvation, because it gives us the
Author of Grace; it is the sweetest, because the Lord is Sweetness Itself... (Pope St.
Pius X)
