THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “The Lord is a God of justice who knows no favorites. Though not unduly partial toward the weak, yet
He hears the cry of the oppressed. The Lord is not deaf to the wail of the orphan, nor the widow
when she pours out her complaint.” Sirach 35: 12-14

“The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds, the prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds; it does not rest till it reaches its goal, nor will it withdraw till the Most High responds” (Sir 35:21) Sometimes I find myself cynically dismissing these words, without even connecting them to Jesus’ invitation to pray always. Our cynicism is shortsighted, we are committing the mistake to consider that God’s plan is eternal and spans accordingly. This week we will be reminded of our Saints and of all our fellow women and men and loved ones who are with the Lord. That is – hopefully – our destiny too: to be with the Lord. The beautiful meditation on his final days that St. Paul wrote to one of his closest friends and disciples, Timothy, gives us the right bearings: I am already being poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me.” (2Tm 4 6-8) Paul helps us by reminding us what the point of this, our life, is. Not to build anything that we can be attached to here, but to journey home while “keeping the faith”. What does it mean, for you, to “keep the faith”? To me is not just a question of keeping the same opinions or ideas,
that is not what faith is. Faith is being able to recognize that Christ, who has come to be with us, God-with-us, two thousand years ago, has never abandoned his friends, you and me. Keeping the faith, therefore, is the daily struggle to see where Christ is, where he’s going, where he’s leading us, his Church, the company of his friends. The worst enemy of this daily work - to spot where Jesus is, and follow after – is the attitude that Jesus describes in this Sunday’s parable. Who is the epitome of the “non-follower”, the opposite of the disciple? He is the one who presumes that he does not need anyone, that he knows better than anyone else. Even in a dialogue with God his attention (maybe my attention, or yours) is always pointed inwards: “look at me!” When we do this, we look like one of those guys who are walking and texting on their phones, totally oblivious of their surroundings, until they hit a post on the sidewalk. I am joking, of course, but this kind of forgetfulness, this self-absorption is a common symptom in our culture, which is progressively losing sight of meaning, truth and, therefore, of Eternity. We need someone that helps us to pay attention, our belonging in the Church, does that for us, hopefully.
