THE SUNDAY READINGS.
Deutero-Isaiah (the second section of the Book) pro-vides us with an image of the power of God’s word. “The word that goes forth from my mouth does not return to me empty, without carrying out my will and succeeding in what it was sent to do.” The wisdom of this extract finds fulfilment in what we read in the Pro-logue of St.John’s Gospel when we hear the good news that the Word of God became flesh in our very midst. The word of God is always nourishing and will forever yield a harvest. However, the word itself must be truly ‘received’, consciously and willingly planted in the heart. The word is addressed to the whole world, to every generation, to every soul, but so few seem willing to accept and embrace its wisdom and its impli-cations.
In St.Paul’s Letter to the Romans we are told that “from the beginning till now the entire creation has been groaning in one great act of giving birth; and not only creation, but all of us who possess the first-fruits of the Spirit, we too groan inwardly as we wait for our bodies to be set free.” God bestowed upon us the great responsibility of stewardship over the whole of creation. The degree to which we acknowledge the sovereignty of the Incarnate Word of God will be re-flected in the exercise our own earthly responsibilities. Is our stewardship of creation a worthy demonstration of our faith or are we still content to remain blind to the consequences of our unquenchable consumerism.

In Matthew’s Gospel we listen to the Parable of the Sower. Matthew seemingly found it difficult to resist the temptation to weave allegorical strands into the texture of Jesus’ parable. Simpler presentations of the Parable of the Sower are found in Mark and Luke. We should allow the simple yet profound truth to emerge and address the soul. “Happy are your eyes because they see, your ears because they hear! I tell you most solemnly, many prophets and holy men longed to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it.” The mysteries of the Kingdom are being addressed to the world in our own day as in ages past, but few in our contemporary culture and society seem willing to accept them. The seed is being planted, but the conditions for reception are hostile. We are the Lord’s disciples in this era and we are the ones charged with planting the seeds. Be not discouraged when faced with rejection for the Lord is truly the Sower and we always stand in his company. When the seed finds rich soil, grace en-sures a crop that is sometimes a hundredfold greater than all our expectations.
FEASTS OF THE WEEK.
Tuesday 14th July – Memoria of St. Camillus De Lellis.
St.Camillus was born within what was then the Kingdom of Naples in 1550. He became a soldier in his
youth and was wayward in his conduct. As a result of gaming debts, Camillus was obliged to work as a
labourer in repairing a building belonging to the Capuchin Franciscan Friars. Under the influence of the
Guardian of the Community, Camillus began his journey towards conversion. Twice he attempted to en-
gage the Capuchin novitiate, but ill-health prevented his progress. He had developed an ulcer on one of
his legs. He left for Rome and entered the Hospital for Incurables. He impressed the authorities with his
fervour and soon was appointed administrator of the hospital. Over and above his administrative duties,
Camillus immersed himself in personally attending to the most basic needs of the sick. It was at the late
age of thirty-two that he began his formation for the priesthood. Following ordination for diocesan ser-
vice, he felt called to lay the foundation for what would become the Congregation of Regular Clerics de-
voted to care of the sick. He faced opposition in this enterprise but finally succeeded in obtaining appro-
bation for the Institute from the Holy See. Camillus was much influenced by St.Philip Neri, the founder
of the Congregation of the Oratory, in his spiritual journey. St.Camillus died on 14th July 1614 and was
canonised by Pope Benedict XIV in 1746. He is Patron of Hospitals and one of the Patrons of the Sick.
Wednesday 15th July- Memoria of St.Bonaventure, Bishop and Doctor of the Church.
Bonaventure was born at Bagnorea in Tuscany in 1221. His baptismal name was John. During his early
childhood, John fell seriously ill and his mother presented him before the great St.Francis of Assisi.
St.Francis prayed for the recovery of John and foreseeing the future glory of the child exclaimed “O buo-
na ventura” – O good fortune. Aged twenty-two Bonaventure entered the Franciscan Order. He was sent
to study at the University of Paris and was for a while under the academic direction of the English Fran-
ciscan Alexander of Hales. Whilst in Paris he became a close friend of Thomas Aquinas. These two great
theologians received their doctorates together. Bonaventure was insistent that Thomas be given the hon-
our of receiving the graduation first, even though Thomas resisted. At the age of thirty-five, Bonaventure
was nominated as General of his Order. The Franciscans had suffered great divisions following the death
of St.Francis. Bonaventure would successfully restore order and calm. He wrote the definitive account of
the life of St.Francis and assisted at the translation of the relics of St.Anthony of Padua. Pope Clement IV
nominated Bonaventure as Archbishop of York but the candidate begged not to be forced to accept the
appointment. A later Pope, Gregory X, obliged Bonaventure to accept appointment as Bishop of Albano,
one of the Suffragan Sees of the Rome. As a result, Bonaventure became a Cardinal. He relinquished the
role of General of the Franciscans. He died on 15th July 1274 whilst assiting at the Second Ecumenical
Council of Lyons. He was canonised by Pope Sixtus IV in 1482.
I am grateful to Fr.Nicholas for setting up our telephone connection that will enable those who do not pos-sess internet access at home to nonetheless tune into our celebrations of the Sacred Liturgy. The 10.00.am Mass on Sunday will be recorded each week and will then be accessible by dialling our designated number. Fr.Nicholas edits the recording to cut out the inevitable silences. The telephone charge is a minimal local tariff. Please share the designat-ed number with those you know who would benefit from this connection.
The number is a local Cardiff number – (20) 098 149. If you are dialling from outside Cardiff or from a mobile phone you will need to dial 02920 098 149. Call charges will apply depending on your phone contract but please bear in mind that if you don't have inclusive minutes, the BT standard tariff is 20p per minute..

Thursday 16th July – Memoria of Our Lady of Mount
Carmel.
This is the patronal feast of the Carmelite Order. The Or-
der derives its name and inspiration from Mount Carmel, a
significant location in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testa-
ment). It was on Mount Carmel that a Church was first
dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary in honour of her As-
sumption into Heaven. The feast also commemorates the
day in 1251 when St.Simon Stock, who was Father Gen-
eral of the Carmelites, received a vision of the Blessed
Virgin Mary at Cambridge. Our Lady revealed to him the
scapular, promising her favour and protection to the Car-
melite Order and to all who wore the garment.

THE PRAYER FOR WALES.
O Almighty God, who in your infinite goodness have sent your only-begotten Son into this world to
open once more the gates of heaven, and to teach us how to know, love and serve you, have mercy on
your people who dwell in Wales. Grant to them the precious gift of faith, and unite them in the one
true Church founded by your divine Son: that, acknowledging her authority and obeying her voice,
they may serve you, love you, and worship you as you desire in this world, and obtain for themselves
everlasting happiness in the world to come. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
Our Lady, Help of Christians, pray for Wales. Saint David, pray for Wales.
Saint Winefride, pray for Wales.

Another inspection was undertaken on the site of St.Mary’s Parish Hall on Friday 3rd July. Bore
hole samples were taken by contractors and the surveyor was also in attendance to undertake a
further examination of the subsidence and its effects. I will keep you informed of the results when
I receive the report.
UPDATE ON FINANCE AND PROPERTY.
A Prayer by St.Alphonsus Liguori.
My Jesus, I believe that You are truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and
I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at
least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as being already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never
permit me to be separated from you. Amen.
A Prayer by St.Thomas More.
Give me, good Lord, a longing to be with You … give me warmth, delight and quickness in thinking upon
You. And give me Your grace to long for Your holy sacraments, and specially to rejoice in the presence of
Your blessed Body, Sweet Saviour Christ, in the Holy Sacrament of the Altar.
ACTS OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION.
I ask all parishioners to keep contact with those you know to be on their own during this period. If
you know of anyone who is in any kind of need then please contact the Priory directly. Let us help
one another to stay safe and well.
REMEMBRANCE OF OUR PARISHIONERS WHO ARE MOST ISOLATED AND
VULNERABLE.
Wash me from my guilt and cleanse me of my sin. I acknowledge my offence; my sin is before
me always. Psalm 50:4-5.
Father, I have sinned against you and am not worthy to be called your son. Be merciful to me, a
sinner. Luke 15:18; 18:13.
My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do
good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your
help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Saviour Jesus
Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy.
O my God, because you are so good, I am very sorry that I have sinned against you, and with the
help of your grace I will not sin again.
LET US DAILY OPEN OUR HEARTS IN CONTRITION TO ALMIGHTY GOD AND RE-
MIND OURSELVES HOW ESSENTIAL IT IS TO GRANT MERCY IF WE EVER EXPECT
TO RECEIVE MERCY.
PRAYER OF SORROW / ACT OF CONTRITION.
I am most grateful to Jack Meggitt-Phillips who has now completed all the necessary checks and
who has therefore been appointed as our new Parish Safeguarding Representative for St.Mary of
the Angels. I have known Jack for many years. He lives in Cardiff and London and is a children’s
author.
APPOINTMENT OF A NEW PARISH SAFEGUARDING REPRESENTATIVE AT
ST.MARY OF THE ANGELS.
Today we celebrate ‘Sea Sunday’, a National Day of Prayer for the wellbeing of Seafarers and their Fami-
lies. We too easily take for granted our access to products from across the world. International trade is
predominantly conducted via the high seas. For most people, maritime commerce will be a matter of
viewing a television advertisement for cruises. In reality, passenger traffic constitutes a relatively small
proportion of the activity conducted by merchant vessels. It is important to remember that the majority of
crew members come from countries in the developing world. Their working environment is inherently
dangerous and their conditions of employment are often susceptible to the forces of exploitation. On ‘Sea
Sunday’ we pray for the work undertaken by the Apostleship of the Sea. The AOS is our national Catholic
agency that provides support and guidance to crew members who visit our ports. The AOS is part of the
Church’s world-wide network of Stella Maris organisations – under the patronage of Our Lady, Star of
the Sea. In normal times we would today be hosting a retiring collection in support of the AOS. Let us
pray for seafarers, their families and for the vital work undertaken by the AOS.
SEA SUNDAY.
Missio Engalnd and Wales is our national Catholic agency for international mission and evangelisa-
tion, part of the universal network of Pontifical Mission Societies. Our Archdiocesan Director is
Fr.Chris Hancock, who was a parishioner of St.Mary of the Angels and was ordained here. He is
presently caring for the community at St.Illtyd’s, Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil – the Church where I
was ordained. Missio is at the service of parishes across the world which are struggling in situa-
tions of poverty and oppression. The agency sponsors the creation of sustainable infrastructure –the
building of churches, convents, schools, children’s homes, clinics and dispensaries. Mission also
sponsors the training of priests, the formation of men and women religious together with lay cate-
chists. In 2019, Missio England and Wales raised £4.8 Million. £2.9 Million was raised for Missio
and the Mill Hill Missionaries through the Red Box scheme. £485,096 was raised in parishes on
World Mission Sunday. £121,716 was distributed to children’s projects. 49 churches, convents and
chapels were built or reconstructed. More than 20,000 children were directly supported around the
world and 2,006 seminarians were sponsored in their on-going seminary formation. Our diocese
raised £118,142. I wish to thank our Missio Representatives in both Parishes together with all our
Red Box Holders. Every prayer matters and every penny counts in support of evangelisation.
THANK YOU.
NEWS OF MISSIO.
Once again we have experienced technical issues with our live-streaming from MCN media’s
website. The website that we were told was going to be the new host for our live-streaming
(watchmcnmedia.tv) has now been shut down and the service has returned to the original address
accessible from our website home page. Thanks to all those who contacted us to let us know
about the issue. Again, we were not warned in advance that this was going to happen, but we
have been reassured that there will be no further disruption to the live-streaming service.

Mgr.Georg Ratzinger, elder brother of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, died in Regensberg, Germany on the
1st July aged 96. Aware that his brother was close to death, the Pope Emeritus, who is himself 93, visited
Regensberg for two days in June. Mgr.Ratzinger was born at Pleiskirchen in 1924. He was already a profi-
cient organist and pianist by the time he entered Minor Seminary at the age of 11. Georg was forced to
leave the seminary at the outbreak of the Second World War. He served in the German armed forces and
was wounded in 1944 while serving in Italy. He was held as a prisoner of war by U.S. forces for a short pe-
riod of time. In 1946 Georg and his brother Joseph enrolled in the Major Seminary of the Archdiocese of
Munich and Freising. They were ordained five years later. Mgr.Georg directed the boys’ choir of Regens-
berg from 1964 until his retirement in 1994. May he rest in peace.
MGR.GEORG RATZINGER R.I.P.
.Pope Francis has named Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti as the new Ap-
ostolic Nuncio to Great Britain. The previous Nuncio, Archbishop Ed-
ward Adams, retired in January. The Nuncio is the Ambassador of the
Holy See to the Court of Saint James and is the official means of com-
munication between the Holy See and the Episcopal Conference of
England and Wales together with the separate Episcopal Conference of
Scotland. Archbishop Gugerotti was born in Verona, Italy, in 1955 and
ordained as a priest for the Diocese of Verona in 1982. He studied an-
cient and oriental languages and became a Professor of Patristics in Ve-
rona. In 1985 he transferred to Rome, teaching in the Pontifical Oriental
Institute. In the same year he was appointed to the Congregation for the
Eastern Churches, becoming Undersecretary in 1997. In 2001 Saint
John Paul II appointed him as Apostolic Nuncio to Georgia and Arme-
nia. Azerbaijan was soon added to his responsibilities. In 2011 Pope
Benedict XVI appointed him as Nuncio to Belarus and Pope Francis
then transferred him to Ukraine in 2015. We extend a warm welcome to
Archbishop Gugerotti as the representative of the Holy Father and offer
him the assurance of our prayers as he prepares to assume his new re-
sponsibilities.
APPOINTMENT OF THE A NEW APOSTOLIC NUNCIO TO GREAT BRITAIN.
Today we recall the horrific events from twenty-five years ago that engraved the name of Srebrenica on our
hearts and minds. The systematic slaughter of thousands of Muslim men and boys by Bosnian Serb forces
during the devastating civil war. The deliberate and systematic murder of so many constituted the worst war
crime perpetrated on European soil since the Second World War. Some are still attempting to deny the
events, calling the descriptions of what happened as ‘fake news’. The leading perpetrators were eventually
prosecuted for their crimes. Srebrenica reminds us not only of the tragedy of Bosnia and its internal divi-
sions, but also of the failings of the international community in general and the United Nations in particular.
Let us remain vigilant and courageous in defence of the innocent.
SREBRENICA.
On Tuesday 14th July I will celebrate the thirty-sixth anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood. I give
thanks to Almighty God for the blessings of his grace and I request your prayers for my ministry as Parish
Priest in your midst.
