Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

On Monday of this past week we began our journey (until Ash Wednesday on March 6th) through what the Church has named, somewhat unfortunately in my opinion, “Ordinary Time.” In English and in Spanish the word ‘ordinary’ usually means something common, something not at all special. But the Latin word from which it is taken refers not to something common or bland, but rather to that which is ordered or numbered. We use the same term when we speak of or-dinal numbers: first, second, third, fourth, fifth, etcetera. So the Sundays of Ordinary Time are identified by their number. This Sunday is the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time occurs between the great Seasons of the Church year which are Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter. As you know, Advent and Christmas celebrate that period during which we are anxiously awaiting the Incarnation or the birth of Jesus, and then the time immediately after Christ’s nativity. Lent/Easter is that period when we prepare ourselves through fasting, prayer and acts of charity to celebrate the greatest feast of all, the Paschal feast of Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection from the dead. The Scripture readings in Mass during these seasons are focused on those events. On the other hand, during the many weeks of Ordinary Time we have an opportunity to reflect on the ministry of Jesus, his extraordinary miracles and cures as well as his preaching of the Kingdom of God. The Old Testament readings in our Lectionary are carefully coordinated with the Gospel readings to show how Jesus’ life and teachings are a fulfillment of God’s ancient covenant with his chosen people. We also read the letters of St. Paul to his communities of converts, letters which offer a profound theological and spiritual background to belief in Jesus Christ as Savior. So there is nothing ordinary about Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time is very much like our own lives. Between the great events that we celebrate or remember in a special way -- our birthdays, our wedding anniversaries, the deaths of our cherished loved ones and so on -- we also must honor the day-to-day, the regular rhythm of work and chores and leisure and sleep. For all of us who do our best to live as Christ taught us to live and to follow him daily, there is much that is to be discovered in ordinary time -- the precious hours we spend with family and friends, the great good that we can do as Christians simply by being kind to one another, by helping whomever we can, even by merely offering, as Jesus so often said, a cup of cold water to someone who is thirsty. In such ordinary moments as these, our everyday lives are made rich and our souls can touch the infinite. Father Ulysses.
Padre Ulysses.
