given time the Lord sends us his Word to free us: to
encourage us, to give us renewed hope, and to
strengthen our faith. He does this through Scripture,
prayer and Eucharist, but also through the invaluable
ministry of presence that we offer to one another. Here
in our parish, that presence is shown in very concrete
ways: through the friendships people have formed, and
more formally through the important work of our Social
Concerns office directed by Carmen Parra and herdedicated team of volunteers, as well as through the
efforts of the Knights of Columbus and other
outreach-oriented groups, including and especially our
ushers and other ministers of hospitality And lets not
forget the successful parish retreats offered this past
week by Father Larry (English) and Frs. Luis, Andres andmyself (Spanish). Many thanks to everyone for your
important witness!
Jesus also reaches us through his and our Mother, Mary.
During this past week, we have celebrated two major
feasts in honor of the Blessed Virgin: the ImmaculateConception and Our Lady of Guadalupe. Under both
titles, Mary is the special patroness of the United States
and, as Pope John Paul II stated of all of America. We
rejoice in her protection and love, her special care and,
most especially, through her faithful witness.
Finally, on behalf of the entire Franciscan community
here at San Luis Rey (Frs. Larry, David, Adrian, Luis andmyself; Brother Moe, as well as our Covenant membersKay and Marie) I would like to express our deep gratitudeand appreciation to everyone for the tremendous
outpouring of friendship, support, and love as we
mourned the passing of our brother Kelly Cullen. Youcame to visit us when we were imprisoned in our grief.
And you brought us Christs consolation and hope.
Thank you and
God bless,
Fr. Chuck

Parish News & Happenings IRA withdrawal this can be done directly to the church andtax can be avoided. We know that there are many demands
on your resources, and many charitable organizations asking
for your gift, just remember that what you give to yourchurch is used right here. It may be for food for the needy,
education for our youth, or services to other sectors of our
community, but it stays here.
If there is a special need that you would like your gift to
address just say so with a note and we will honor your wish.
Thank you for all that you do and all that you give. Our
parish is stronger and better able to cope with local needs
because of your gifts.

YEAR END PLANNINGIf you have been reading the business
section of either of our local papers you have
no doubt noticed that the year end tax advice
columns are starting to appear. The last
quarter of the year is the time to take the
necessary actions to reduce that tax liability that looms just
around the corner. Many folks choose charitable giving as
the avenue to reduce those taxes. If this is your plan please
do not forget our parish. If you need to make a mandatory
Dear Parish Family,
Peace and all good! Today, the Church marks the mid-
point in the Advent season with a moment of rest and
reflection. By tradition, it is known as Gaudete Sunday
from the Latin word meaning Rejoice! The presiding
priest wears rose-colored vestments (but not rose-
colored glasses) and we light the single pink candle on theAdvent wreath to mark the special significance of the
date. In a way, this is the half-time show: a time to stop,
take stock of how we are preparing ourselves spiritually,
and to start all over again in case the first part of the
season has been disastrous. There is absolutely no
reason to stay discouraged; the Lord is with us.
In todays Gospel from Matthew (11:2-11), Jesus receives
word that his cousin John the Baptist is in prison awaiting
an uncertain fate. John is anxious, afraid, insecure and in
doubt: Is Jesus the Promised One or not? If not, then
Johns ministry has been in vain and his suffering has no
meaning whatsoever. Jesus sends words of reassurance
to John through Johns followers, referring to the Baptist
as one is more than a prophet. Much more! Jesus
validates Johns faith and commitment and gives him
strength to go on.
Jesus does the same with us. He sends word to us
through the people who touch our livesto let us know
when we are on track. As human beings we are prone to
frustration and discouragement. Right now, we live in
difficult times: the economy is in terrible shape;
unemployment is high; more and more families are facing
loss of their homes through foreclosure. Many goodpeople are tempted to self-medicate through any number
of addictive and ultimately self-destructive behaviors.
And still others of usespecially during the holiday
seasonexperience loneliness and depression often
heightened by illness, age, isolation and fear.
Whatever prison we may feel that we inhabit at any

Fr. Raul Alejos-Montelongo
Recently, a number of parishioners have asked us about Fr.
Raul Alejos. As you may recall, last December, Fr. Raul left
his assignment here at Mission San Luis Rey Parish. At that
time, he asked his Franciscan brothers, for help, and reported
that he was suffering from the disease of alcoholism. After
leaving the parish, Fr. Raul was sent to Portland, Oregon for a
complete psychological evaluation. He underwent further
psychological evaluations and treatment at a special
rehabilitation facility for clergy in Pennsylvania. Against the
recommendation of his superiors and the directors of the
program, Fr. Raul left the program without completing it and
returned to Mexico.
In September of this year, Father Raul received notice that
he was being dismissed from the Franciscan order for grave
reasons. He is no longer a Franciscan friar. He is prohibited
from functioning in any way as a priest in the Diocese of San
Diego and in other dioceses in the United States. The bishops
of Mexico have also been made aware of Fr. Rauls current
status and unless or until he obtains permission from a
bishop, he may not function as a priest. If you have any questions or concerns about this matter,
please contact the pastor, Fr. Chuck, directly.
ATTENTION DRIVERS:For the safety of your belongings, we please ask that you
make sure to lock your vehicles and secure your items out
of sight. Weve had two incidents this year and we would
like to avoid any future occurrences.
Thankyou.

8/8/2019 Parish Bulletin for the Week of 12/12/2010
8/10
do una suerte incierta. Juan est ansioso, temeroso, insegu-ro y dudando: Es Jess El Prometido o no?
a menudo, agudizndose por enfermedad, edad, aislamien-to y temor.
sia y as evitar la contribucin a pagar. Nosotros sabemos que
debes tener muchas demandas sobre tus recursos y muchas
organizaciones caritativas reclamando tu regalo, solo acur-
