    Third Sunday in rdinary Time

A man sent by God whose name is John Bosco(continued from last week)

Dear Parishioners ,In the fall of 1835, John entered

the seminary to begin the final stageon his road to the priesthood. Hewas twenty years old. . The nightbefore, mamma Margaret spoke to

John as only a mother would: whenyou came into the world, I conse-crated you to the Blessed Virgin;when you began your schooling, Irecommended you exclusively to theMadonna. Now I beg you to belongto her entirely. Love those wholove her, and if someday you become a priest, constantly pro-mote devotion to this good Mother. Margaret and Johnboth began to cry, He broke the silence: Mother, beforeleaving you for my new life let me thank you for all you havedone for me. Your counsels are engraved up on my soul, andthey will be my treasure from which I shall draw every day.

Johns Mother, affectionately known by the boys and ear-ly Salesians as Mamma Margaret, gave her son a Christianeducation early in life. It was to be this way till the end ofher earthly life. She spent the last decade of her life with Johnas his apostolate began to unfold. She was a brave woman, wise and prudent. Mamma Margaret passed on to her chil-dren the gospel she lived and practiced. Her son Joseph be-came the father of a good family and continued his life as afarmer. Her stepson Anthony, the cause of so much heart

ache, eventually found his way in life and made peace withMamma Margaret and John. She believed that moral princi-ples and Christian behavior were the foundation of a peacefuland successful life. Although she had been raised in dire pov-erty and had to raise her own family in conditions not muchbetter, her faith in God was never shaken. At this importantperiod of his life, the teachings and encouragement of hissaintly mother were to help John meet the challenge of find-ing his own way in the world.

In todays world too many young people have reason tofeel abandoned by their parents. Some are raised by elderlygrand-parents; some become parents themselves in theirteens. Under these circumstances there is deep loss of per-sonal worth and a lowering of self-esteem. Not finding thelove they need at home the young will seek out groups thatgive them feeling of longing and self-worth. There is nodoubt that in the normal home environment, the motherplays a crucial role not only in the physical growth of herchild, but also in his or her emotional and psychic develop-ment. With the premature death of her husband, Margaretremained faithful to her vocation of motherhood and raisedher three children with care, love and vigilance. Though shewas illiterate, her life and example gave her children much tolearn from. This one-parent home was functional.(To be continued.)

Ahora te ruegoque te encomiendes enteramente a ella.

Don Bosco Friend of the Young

and the Poor1 . You were the light in the dark for the young whocould not see. And you were a spark for the youngto become all they could be. Help us all come to beall God calls us to be.

Refrain:We will send the message. We will be the witnessesthat you, Don Bosco, are the friend of the youngand the poor. Lead us safely through the storm tothe heavenly shore .

    2. You felt the fire in the heart of the Lord whoburns with love. And you touched the heart of the

young with that fire from above. Touch our heartswith that fire, make our God our desire.

3.You showed the young they were called to theservice of their Lord. You taught them to walk inthe light and the power of His Word. Help us walkin that light, make His Word our delight .
