“Brazil: I had heard and read so much about itsculture, people, climate and entrepreneurialspirit that I could only choose this seminar overthe others. However, after having preparedmyself for the experience I was more surprisedthan I expected to be.I was very impressed by the size of Brazil, its growth rate, its development and itscontrasts. The seminar was very interesting andthe companies we visited were the real life proofof the breathtaking development of this emergingcountry. In addition, Brazilians are warm, friendlyand open-minded, very much concerned abouttheir country’s development and they reallytake the time to get to know you…somethingthat we tend to forget in Europe.Even being miles away, you really feel at homehere…Obrigado Brazil!”

InternationalConsulting Project

16

The International Consulting Project (ICP) is an integral part of the pedagogicaldynamic of the European Executive MBA.

The ICP is designed to provide participants with a collaborative, multi-disciplinaryand often intercultural work experience on a real-life strategic challenge and to putinto practice the concepts and theory acquired during the MBA.

In groups, participants are expected to perform an in-depth analysis of a situationor an issue faced by a company and to make recommendations for actions that canrealistically be implemented by the firm.

This 8 to 12-month team project will allow participants to use and to consolidatetheir understanding of the concepts and tools presented during the programme:

- either in a business context with which he/she is not familiar,- or in collaboration with his/her employer.

The ICP results in a series of recommendations that the company can implement tomeet the strategic challenge at hand. The company sponsor receives a comprehensivewritten report and the conclusions of the project are presented to an academic jury.

Examples of ICPs

The ICP’s theme is always based on a strategic issue.

• Reassessment of a corporate strategy in a changing context and recommendationsfor implementation

• Analysis of an industry and identification of new business opportunities• Reorganisation of a subsidiary or a department• Design and implementation of redundancy plans• Production of a business plan for a new activity• Evaluation of consumer trends on a specific product line in light of market development• Development of a marketing strategy to enhance brand image• Setting up or restructuring of a production unit or a distribution network

The Indian automotive industry has recently attracted global playersin all categories of the market. Some of these companies have startedmanufacturing cars in joint ventures with Indian firms. India is noexception to what has been observed in other countries: relocatingoperations in different markets eventually resulted in the move ofsubcontractors. We wanted to study one such case and try tounderstand if the OEM in question needed to move to India; whethersuch a move was going to be profitable; and eventually to find out ifthere were other options available to the company. Our team consisted of four senior consultants: one workingfor the company, one working for the auto manufacturer, one workingas a financial consultant and another native from India working onintercultural issues. The company was able to use this diversity incoming to a decision about their move to India. Finally, the decision togo to India outweighed the one to stay out.The skills developed during our ICP were not just technical (finance, strategy, marketing) but also entailed a heavy dose of interdisciplinarymanagement, working with different personalities and collectivedecision-making.Our ICP has left us richer with the experience and more confidentin interpersonal skills.

As a Director of a Humanitarian Program in Asia, I applied to do an Executive MBA inorder to move into the field of microfinance and to seriously upgrade mymanagementskills. One year into my MBA, I have already implemented two microcredit programs in thePhilippines. As an investment, my MBA has already paid off! ESCP Europe combinesacademic rigor and excellence with real-world relevance: the optimal balance of studyand practical application. It is a rich, multicultural peer learning experience with colleaguesfrom across the globe, and the itinerant track literally takes the learning out of theclassroom and into the international business world. What I most appreciate is that asExecutive MBA students we are challenged to immediately implement our learning andto do so in “think-outside-the-box”-creative ways.

'When I started at ESCP Europe I wanted to develop an improved understanding of thebusiness environment in order to build the bridge between business and science whichis crucial for bringing new medicines to an increasingly competitive market. The appliedbenefit from the company's perspective is that the programme really contributes todeveloping business know-how for managers without sufficient business background, helps to develop intercultural competence as well as international networks, and offersexcellent compatability with the job.The schedule of working and studying is often very

intense but alsomotivating and rewarding. I feel that courses such as Corporate Strategy andOrganisationalBehaviour have greatly improved my skills in managing major stakeholders and in providing leadership. The biggest benefit of my experience at ESCP Europe is the confidence in my ability to handle businessproblems which is recognized inside the company. The diversity of the backgrounds of my classmatesmakes the EMBA an unforgettable and unique networking experience.'Dr Gabriele Schuhmann-GiampieriGlobal Project Leader, Bayer HealthCare

TheEMBAhas definitelymade an impact onme in termsof theway inwhich I react or respondto different situations. My goal for the EMBA was to experience the globalised world froma European standpoint. ESCP Europe truly differentiates from the other Business schools as itrepresents a European atmosphere in terms of education and people. The 5 campuses gaveme the opportunity to travel and experience 5 different worlds within Europe with a mix ofInternational students. The flexibility of the course structure accommodates our diverseschedules and geographical bases: I travel from India every month. My company, “Alpha X-RayTechnologies (I) Pvt. Ltd was recently acquired by Royal Philips,Netherlands”. I feel I appliedmost of the topics I have explored during the EMBA to this process, from unders-tanding Europeans and negotiations to corporate finance. Throughmynetwork at ESCP Europe I have accessto many professionals throughout the world and I can exchange and build onmore ideas between India andEurope.

Vikram MordaniDirector Sales & Marketing, Philips

ESCP Europe is a learning experience in many ways and it goes way beyond the strongacademic knowledge taught here. As a new entrepreneur, I seized the opportunity tochallengemybusinessmodel, with the input of ESCP Europe professors andmyEMBApeers,in order to reposition my company on its market. I benefited from their cultural diversityand professional backgrounds to explore newmarkets. It has been key on the path to successwith the help of the alumni network. Last but not least, this experience has given memore confidence and credibility when dealing with customers and financing institutions.

One year later, thanks to excellent results and the variety of new skillsacquired during the European Executive MBA, I amgeneral manager for that region and enjoy leading aninternational team towards future successes.

Having built my career in the banking sector and in a veryFrench environment, I had the will to orient myself towardsthe financial sector and thus work in a more internationalenvironment. Speaking foreign languages is a good point;still I knew that I needed a lot more to succeed in terms ofknowledge and skills.I very much appreciated the electives held in differentcountries as well the seminars around the globe. Not tomention the opportunity to conduct an InternationalConsulting Project in Shanghai. The MBA experience gave me food for thought and abetter insight of which direction I needed to give to mycareer. Thus, I succeeded in entering theAsset Managementindustry and obtain a position in Business development.
