Communiqué Paris 2009 COMMUNIQUE PARIS 2009 / PARIS CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU / updated on 09/02/2009 2009 Paris: one step ahead Paris, a transformation. Paris, a city at the heart of Europe, is the favourite destination of almost 30 million visitors. The capital’s ability to change and to be up amongst the ranks of the most innovative cities makes it one of the most attractive destinations. Already linked to the world by six train stations and two international airports, Paris also has a strong presence in the virtual world with the extension of its Wi-Fi Internet network in public areas. An urban and architectural transformation is also underway: the city is taking on a new look in numerous urban districts and spaces, such as in the Les Halles district, destined to become a veritable green oasis in the heart of the capital. The project of Paris Métropole, aimed at creating a new urban fabric and increased links between Paris and adjacent towns, has become a major development scheme for the capital. In the coming years, architectural projects like the Triangle tower, at porte de Versailles, the development of the Masséna-Bruneseau district, in the South-East, and the future Signal and Phare towers, at La Défense, will forge links with neighbouring communes. Paris also boasts new cultural and tourism venues. The end of 2008 was marked by the inauguration of the CentQuatre, a 39,000 m² multidisciplinary arts centre, and by the re-opening of the Forum des images, devoted to cinema. The year 2009 will see the opening of Docks en Seine, a 12,000 m² centre which will house the Cité de la mode et du design (Fashion and Design Centre), a sign of the revival of the Austerlitz district. On the horizon for 2010-2012 are other ambitious projects like the Gaîté Lyrique, a work and performance space for contemporary music and the digital arts, the Fondation Louis Vuitton, in a building designed by Frank O. Gehry, at the Jardin d’Acclimatation, or, the Philharmonie de Paris, a huge symphony hall designed by Jean Nouvel, in the Parc de la Villette. Paris, always an event. All year long, some three hundred arts and culture-related events take place every day in the city. Some of those invented in Paris have been taken up by by other capital cities: the Nuit Blanche, now adopted from Rome to Miami, or Paris-Plages, a summer event which transforms parts of the city into a seaside resort, today taken up by Milan, Brussels and Mexico. In addition to these happenings, there are major international events: the triennial Force de l’art, presenting a panorama of the artistic scene in France, Monumenta (in 2010), a carte blanche invitation to an international artist under the prestigious glass roof of the Grand Palais, or the Fiac (International contemporary art fair) and Art Paris, the two big trade fairs for contemporary creation in Paris. Just as 2008 saw record entries to the exhibition “Picasso et les maîtres”, at the Grand Palais, with more than 780,000 visitors, 2009 should see the same popular impact with major retrospective exhibitions devoted to Warhol, Renoir, Giorgio De Chirico, Kandinsky, and even Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese. The city is also a talent pool for contemporary artists such as Sophie Calle, Daniel Buren, Fabrice Hybert, Bertrand Lavier, etc. Paris is also at the heart of current social issues: sustainable habitat at the Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine, “La Terre et nous”, at the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie, etc. This proliferation of events is also marked by numerous trade fairs and congresses, as well as the organization of company events. Paris can in fact boast being a leading destination for business tourism professionals.

2009 Paris: one step ahead

Paris, a transformation. Paris, a captivating city, because of the quality of its lifestyle, which it reinvents and projects into the future. In terms of hotels, the capacity and diversity of establishments never ceases to grow. The modification in hotel classification with the creation of a 5-star category, and the choice of big foreign hotel groups (in particular Asian) like Shangri-la, Mandarin Oriental or Peninsula to open in the capital will lead to the creation of new luxury hotels. For upscale and unusual stays, Paris innovates with design hotels like the Hôtel Particulier Montmartre or the recent Mama Shelter. All of which does not prevent Paris from being one of the least expensive cities for budget hotel accommodation. A fashion capital, Paris remains both the cradle for the greatest couture houses and the favourite destination for fashionistas. A gastronomic capital, the city tempts gourmets, who are attracted by new restaurants run by rising young chefs or by the greatest names in gastronomy, from regional cooking to molecular cooking. Paris is also about nightlife. With the Passe nuit, launched by the Paris City Council, and the increase in night transport, the wishes of every generation are satisfied: night clubs and dancing for all ages, numerous jazz clubs, piano bars, and more than 200 theatres and cabarets ranging from famous establishments like the Moulin Rouge or the new Palace to small variety show theatres. Paris and sustainable development. Living and staying in the capital, a veritable green city, is a pleasurable experience. Eco-neighbourhoods are springing up all over Paris, like for example in the Clichy-Batignolles or Pajol districts, in the 18th arrondissement. The covering over of some parts of the ring road is contributing to the creation of new parks, for relaxation and well-being. For getting around, Paris plays the ecology card. The introduction of bus lanes has facilitated circulation in the capital and the success of the tramway in the south of Paris has led to a project to extend it to neighbouring communes. Not to mention the resounding success of the Vélib’ self-service rental bicycles, which have inspired the Autolib’ project, a self-service electric car hire scheme available soon in Paris. And as fluctuat nec mergitur is the motto of Paris, the city has invested in its fluvial network with Batobus, linking the major tourist sites, and Voguéo, the new river shuttle bus that links Paris to other towns along the Seine. Protection of the environment is gaining ground in the hotel sector, with ecological labels, like “Green Key” or “Ecolabel”, already awarded to several Parisian hotels. The number of establishments with these labels should increase rapidly as big hotel chains, like Accor, adopt environmental charters.

mannerism from central Italy (a movement originating in Rome and Florence) to

a naturalist vision of the world, characteristic of the Venetian spirit. Emphasis is

placed on the period from Veronese’s permanent move to Venice, in 1553, to

the death of Titian, in 1576.
