Aunque su pésimo clima sea famoso, la primavera es la mejor estación para visi-tar París. Claro, eso lo sabe todo el mundo, por ello para evitar las multitudes de museos y templos lo mejor es caminar y fatigar las calles de esta deslumbrante ciudad, para descubrir cómo las diversas tonalidades de verde de sus parques y boulevares pasan a ser los colores dominantes.

Florece en primavera

Notwithstanding the bad weather Paris is famous for, Spring is the best season to visit the city. This is no secret to tourists around the world, however, so in order to avoid large crowds gathering at museums and churches, it’s best to walk and wear out this dazzling city’s streets and gradually discover how various shades of green in parks and boulevards are really the protagonists of the Parisian landscape.

Se me ocurrió viajar a París en Se-mana Santa. La idea no era mala, pero parece que buena parte de los 27 millones de turistas que la visitan

cada año tuvieron la misma ocurrencia. Y gran parte de ellos se acumulaban en fi las kilomé-tricas para visitar los museos y monumentos más populares. Incluso, me pareció que las gárgolas de la catedral de Notre Dame se bur-laban de la gente que esperaba por horas para entrar en el templo.

Sin embargo, las multitudes me dieron la oportunidad de disfrutar París desde otra perspectiva: la de caminar todo el día, y dis-frutar de sus amplios boulevares, parques y calles.

Sin prisas, se trata de que los pies deri-ven por un prolongado paseo a lo largo del río Sena. Cada tanto, es cuestión de cruzar algu-no de los puentes y contemplar, de un lado y del otro de la ribera, los edifi cios señoriales y

It occurred to me I might travel to Pa-ris at Easter. Not a bad idea, except that a large part of the 27 million tourists that visit the city each year had the very

same one. And most of them were to be found in mile-long queues around the city, lining up to visit its most popular museums and mo-numents. I had the sense that Notre Dame’s gargoyles were peering down at the visitors mockingly, laughing at the poor souls waiting for hours on end to enter their cathedral.

In spite of the crowds, or rather because of them, I was able to enjoy Paris from a diffe-rent angle: from the point of view of day-long walks along wide boulevards, in parks, and through Parisian streets.

This particular tour consists of letting your feet leisurely guide you on a long stroll along the River Seine. Every now and then you can cross one of the bridges and admire, from both riverbanks, the stately and pom-

Even on a Sunday afternoon, some Parisians never miss a chance to display their elegance. / J.Ch.

towers, the Louvre’s imposing structure—along with its famous glass pyramids in the center of the courtyard…and from there, you might head down one of the Tuileries Gar-dens’ broad paths dotted with trees of every shade of green.

After a while, you come upon the elegant Champs-Élysées and its wide range of luxury shops, each one boasting more square meters than the last, with sky-high prices that only increase each year, and yet always busy with customers. And there in the background, as a reminder of Napoleon’s military exploits throughout Europe, stands the overwhel-ming Arc de Triomphe, amid its permanent race-track maze of cars that enter and exit the Place de l’Etoile (with very few accidents!).

A bit further down the pretty Kléber Ave-

tes torres de Notre Dame, el imponente edi-fi cio del Louvre –y en el medio de su patio, las famosas pirámides de cristal-, y de ahí, un bonito paseo de anchos senderos y árboles de toda la gama de verdes por el Jardín de las Tullerías.

Más adelante, se despliega la elegancia de los Champs-Élysées y su amplio catálogo de tiendas de lujo, cada una con más metros cuadrados que la otra, cada una con precios más estratoféricos que el año pasado, y sin embargo, siempre con clientes. Y allí al fondo, para recordar las hazañas militares de Napo-león por media Europa, el contundente Arco del Triunfo, con su permanente scalextric de coches que entran y salen de la Plaza de la Estrella (¡y casi no hay accidentes!).

Un rato más de caminata por la bonita

avenida Kléber deriva en el ícono de la ciu-dad, la Torre Eiffel. Su espigada fi gura de 330 metros no necesita presentación. Es cuestión de descansar en plan pic-nic en el parque del Campo de Marte, subir la cabeza y contemplar esa maravilla de la arquitectura industrial, y agradecer que la burocracia de muchos y el sentido común de otros hayan frenado la in-tención inicial de desmontarla tras la Exposi-ción Universal de 1889.

Fuera del circuito del Sena, hay cientos de

And being thankful that lots of bureaucracy on one hand, and common sense on the other, put a stop to the initial intention to dismantle the Eiffel Tower following the Universal Exhibition of 1889.

rincones de París para descubrir y perderse, ya sea el recuerdo de la bohemia artística en las colinas de Montmartre, la sofi sticada ar-quitectura del Centro Pompidou en el barrio de Les Halles, el leve pasado medieval por las intrincadas callejuelas del Barrio Latino, los puestos de libros de viejo en los quais (mue-lles) del Sena y el barrio futurista de la Défen-se –con su Arco del Triunfo de líneas rectas y diseño minimalista–.

Hubo un solo sitio donde no hacía falta

places to discover and get lost in while visi-ting Paris, from the memory of bohemian ar-tists in the hills of Montmartre, to the sophis-ticated architecture of the Centre Pompidou in the Les Halles district, the brief medieval past in the winding streets of the Latin Quar-ter, the old book stalls on the Seine’s quais (docks), and the futuristic district of La Dé-fense with its own modern Arc de Triomphe of straight lines and minimalist design.
