Core and Peripheral regions in Europe

Paris and Mezzogiorno Paris Basin is to Europe what the GDA is to Ireland – mild

climate, low lying, good farmland, good communication links and well developed secondary and tertiary sector.

Mezzogiorno is Italy’s BMW region – more rural, generally poorer, dependent on primary activities and with a harsher climate.

Also Mezzogiorno is home to the Camorra (Naples based Mafia) – means that efforts to tackle underdevelopment of the region are often stopped by corruption

(syncline)

Different rock types = different soil types = specialisation in Agriculture. Different farming areas known as Pays

Known as “Granary of France” or the Ile De France

Well drained by Seine, Loire and tributaries

Climate – maritime (mild) in west, continental (hotter) in east

Test – Common Mistakes Misreading the question/not understanding the question

e.g question on primary activities in an Irish Region – some answers discussed the Burren and its landscape.

Not sketching a diagram/map e.g. Map of Ireland showing the GDA and a transport route

Not writing enough (2 sentences = 1 SRP)

Vague or waffly sentences e.g. “the weather is very bad in the west” instead of “the rainfall is high in the west due to relief rain, with precipitation over 2000 mm annually in places”
