Some of the steeply cut cliffs were created between 25,000 and 16,000 years ago and are a respository of fossils and Aboriginal artifacts. The ochres of the cliffs are best observed in the early morning and afternoon Village settlements: Faced with loss of population, unemployment and the associated social ills caused by a Depression, the South Australian Government of the 1890s proposed a bold social experiment realised by the eleven communial village settlements initiated in 1894 at sites including Waikerie, Lyrup and Kingston. This layed the foundations for the Riverland’s successful horticultural industry. Kingston-on-Murray was once a major crossing where 2 ferries worked. The Kingston bridge was completed in 1975. Now you can stop at a quiet riveside town and take the time to visit the internationally renown Banrock Station Wine and Visitors Centre for a wonderful meal and stroll around the local boardwalk and wetlands. Situated 64km north of Waikerie on an unsealed road, Birds Australia Gluepot Reserve is Australia’s largest community managed and operated conservation reserve. The reserve is managed and operated entirely by volunteers. Some 54,000 ha is size, it is home to 18 nationally threatened species of birds, 53 species of reptiles and 12 species of bats, some of which are nationally threatened. Enjoy the Michael Hyde Visitor Centre on your trip. Enjoy the Waikerie Wetlands Scenic Drive through the Riverland. This loop takes in some interesting and diverse landscapes, lagoons, towns and waterways. Heading across the free ferry to Overland Corner Hotel, call in on Lock 3, down past Napiers Ruins near Barmera and Lake Bonney. Turn right along the winding river road of Cobdogla past Watchels Lagoon. Turn left towards Moorook and scenic drive town to Loxton. Head up towards Berri where you can go over the bridge or take an alternative loop to the Lyrup Ferry. Head back towards Monash and the Adventure playground then back along the Sturt Highway towards Kingston-on- Murray and Banrock Station for a wonderful meal and boardwalk through the wetlands and back to Waikerie. Enjoy the Waikerie Nor-West Scenic Drive towards Morgan and Blanchetown. Take the ferry across the Murray towards Taylorville and call in on Lock 2, continue on past Weston Flat and take the turn off to Cadell on the Ferry. Follow the signs to Morgan and across the Ferry to the Morgan riverfront. Come back on the Morgan Ferry and head south to Blanchetown with picturesque cliff views and follow the Sturt Highway back to Waikerie. Some roads are remote in the Murray Mallee region. Please take care and notify someone of your travels in the region. If your car does break down stay with it and ensure you carry plenty of drinking water. Overland Corner is the hub of an intriguing local history. This site was a busy way station on the rough overland stock and mail routes. Now operated as a pub and museum the extent of the 1956 flood is evident half way up the rough stone walls of the old hotel (c.1859). Gather an insight into the Aboriginal and European heritage by walking the 8km trail. Barmera is situated on the shore of Lake Bonney. Barmera is a regional focus of watersport activities. The town claims the title of the Country Music Capital of South Australia by holding annual industry awards. You can explore Rocky’s Hall of Fame Pioneers Museum. Renmark is the oldest Riverland town (1887). The impressive white facade of the heritage listed Renmark Hotel stands tall. While the Renmark Club overlooks the Murray River. Enjoy musuems, walking trails and galleries. The Riveland is a fruit fly free zone. You are not permitted to take fruit and vegetables into the Riverland. Fines applied for undeclared fruit. Morgan has a vibrant local history and local historic town walk. The Port of Morgan was a hive of activity and only second to Port Adelaide in South Australia. the massive timber wharf (once 190m long) was busy with paddle steamers of the late 19th century. Cadell was named after Captain Francis Cadell who, with Captain William Randell, initiated steam navigation on the Murray Darling river system. The district’s orchards and vineyards are situated in an ancient river loop or basin near the great Nor West Bend. Enjoy the riverside park just down from the Ferry Loxton has been serving the local community since 1895 and rapidly expanded with irrigation. There is a strong German heritage associated with the early settlers. These pioneers made this flood-free town the garden centre of the Riverland. The Port of Morgan was a hive of activity and only second to Port Adelaide in South Australia. the massive timber wharf (once 190m long) was busy with paddle steamers of the late 19th century. You can visit the local museum in the Landseer building or enjoy the local river front.

Cadell was named after Captain Francis Cadell who, with Captain William Randell, initiated steam navigation on the Murray Darling river system. The district’s orchards and vineyards are situated in an ancient river loop or basin near the great Nor West Bend. Enjoy the riverside park just down from the Ferry

Loxton has been serving the local community since 1895 and rapidly expanded with irrigation. There is a strong German heritage associated with the early settlers. These pioneers made this flood-free town the garden centre of the Riverland. Visit the historical village, walk a nature trail or discover the ‘tree of knowledge’.

Berri has a strong administrative focus in the Riverland. Citrus and vine fruits are the backbone of the local economy. An avenue of jacaranda trees draws the visitor to riverside gardens and lawns where the memorial to gentle Jimmy James stands. Visit the impressive Wilabalangaloo Reserve or climb the water tower for impressive views.
