Comments

As you will see, I have noted all comments written on the forms*. I hope the responses address the queries / concerns adequately but I am quite

happy to discuss any of these with people should they request to do so. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and as a result of these, there will

be some minor changes over the coming months where these are feasible.

*Comments which relate to specific incidents or which may clearly identify individual circumstances have been omitted.

COMMENT RESPONSE

More vegetables eg carrot sticks, celery and / or cucumber instead of crisps with sandwich / wrap and ‘option a’ choices at lunchtime.

School lunches are at present a big challenge for us. We do ensure that fruit is provided on most days. It is not possible to provide choice as we did previously due to boxes being made up for each individual child unlike the ‘canteen’ system. Children are able to bring in a ‘healthy’ breaktime snack and also, younger children are provided with a piece of fruit each day.

I feel my child has excelled brilliantly in her development with the help and support of this school.

We are pleased that your child is progressing well. Fabulous news!

It would be lovely to receive more messages on Freeflow to see what the children have been doing. Appreciate this is lots of work for the teachers but I receive more from other teachers for my other children.

We do try to use Freeflow as much as is practical and often, ‘generic’ uploads are added to share what the children as a whole are doing. We do try to keep on top of this but currently, with so many demands on class teachers, this is challenging!

Disappointing but not surprising news about the nativity; thank you for recording it and we look forward to watching it.

We have tried to adapt to the current situation and very much hope all who get to see the recording enjoy it as much as we have!

School has taken a very supportive and caring approach to my child’s needs and has individualised her education to support her as she has made important transitions.

Many thanks. We think it important to ensure that, as far as is possible and practicable, we meet the specific needs of all our learners and it is lovely to see that this has been the case for you.

Would like to see after school clubs and activities to be made available when possible after lockdown restrictions.

Absolutely and a number of our extra curricular activities have ‘taken a hit’ this year. As soon as permitted, we will restart but only once children from different year groups are able to mix. Also, most of our teachers are teaching some maths sessions after school so time is also an issue at this moment.

I have found all staff at the school approachable, supportive and committed to my child’s education and well-being and it has made a huge difference to her. Thank you.

We do try! Of course, lines of communication are a bit more tricky at present but we are really pleased that what we have seems to be working.

The staff at our school will do their best to help in any way they can and this includes the office staff who go above and beyond to help you.

We feel it important to be approachable and, indeed, empathetic. Thank you.

My children are very different personalities and both have been treated as they need to feel at ease and succeed – thank you!

Wonderful to hear! Thanks.

My child is happy at school, however as a parent, like a few others I’d like to be more involved (via Freeflow) to see how my child is doing within their class and some more feedback on whether I can help any more at home.

We do try to use Freeflow as much as is practical and often, ‘generic’ uploads are added to share what the children as a whole are doing. We do try to keep on top of this but currently, with so many demands on class teachers, this is challenging!

Our son is very happy at this school. He enjoys talking about school at home in a positive way and we have noticed him developing with his learning. We feel the school is meeting his needs and look forward to their future years here.

Really pleased to hear this! We want all of the children to enjoy their experiences at school and it sounds like this is the case in this instance. Brilliant news!

Communication from the school is excellent; love the Freeflow account! We have worked on trying to improve communications based on feedback in previous surveys. We are glad you feel it is effective.

We would be interested for our son to be involved with any after school clubs that would encourage further development socially (post COVID-19).

Absolutely and a number of our extra curricular activities have ‘taken a hit’ this year. As soon as permitted, we will restart but only once children from different year groups are able to mix. Also, most of our teachers are teaching some maths sessions after school so time is also an issue at this moment.

Sometimes feel my child could be pushed more. All children are taught to ‘exceed their capabilities’ and we do ensure that there are sufficient tasks to extend, although it is occasionally equally important to reinforce and consolidate previous learning.

Would prefer to know more often if there are specific areas that need to be worked on and don’t always know this. For example if we knew, things could be worked on at home.

If we identify any key issues, we will of course share them as appropriate. Beyond this, we have a full reporting system in place with three reports and three parents’ evenings per year. Also, if you have concerns, please do let us know.

My child loves Belmont School and has enjoyed it everyday since joining Nursery at the age of 3.

This is terrific! Really pleased that this is the case as we really do want a school of happy people (children and adults!).

Unaware of after school clubs available. Once these restart, information will be shared. Of course, we do not know when this will be.

I’d like to point out how much my children enjoy the ‘Reading Raffle’ and other certificates of achievement, even if it is just a sticker. Always so excited to show me.

We feel that reward systems are important to recognise exceptional performance or effort. They also encourage motivation and a sense of pride and achievement. I am glad your children like these.

Unaware of options for clubs. Once these restart, information will be shared. Of course, we do not know when this will be.

My child really enjoys coming to school and is keen to tell me about their day. I am pleased their achievements out of school are also celebrated.

We are delighted your child enjoys school and we are also aware of how many children are involved with out of school activities. We do have a genuine interest in this and love to hear all about it!

Due to COVID-19 we expect fewer occasions to be made aware of what our child will be taught and how she is progressing via Parents’ Evening.

Hopefully you found the telephone parents’ conference helpful. In terms of what is taught, we do send out termly information which covers this and is also available to view on the website.

The school is a lovely place, the staff are all approachable, they seem enthusiastic and genuinely interested and care about the children. My child always enjoys school; I feel very lucky.

We are really pleased you feel this way. Thank you.

The school staff have always been so kind and easy to talk to. We do try to be friendly and approachable and it is reassuring to know that you feel this way.

I am very impressed with how the school have dealt with the pandemic and am happy with the way things are going. My child is happy and making big steps in her education.

The past few months have been an enormous learning curve for us all and we hope we have responded appropriately! We are delighted your child is happy.

No problem with the school, our daughter seems to be progressing well. Fantastic but should anything change, please do let us know.

We were pleased with the way school has been organised during the COVID-19 crisis. Our child has been happy and safe throughout. A huge thank you to all the staff.

The past few months have been an enormous learning curve for us all and we hope we have responded appropriately! We are delighted your child is happy. Hopefully, we will be permitted to look at easing restrictions once the time is right to do so……!

Previous years have held meetings to discuss what the year ahead would look like for our child regarding subjects and topic overviews. Do to COVID-19 we are aware this wasn’t possible but feel an alternative would have been useful to inform us as parents on how best to support our child.

At the start of the year, a curriculum overview was sent out and the subjects and areas covered can also be found on the website. In January, the same thing will be shared for the Spring Term.

We as parents believe that Belmont has very high expectations for the children and feel comfortable that our child has had a fantastic start to her education. Thank you!

We feel it important to ensure all children are identified as individual learners and plan to challenge them all, at the appropriate ‘level’, to exceed what they feel they may be capable of! We are really pleased you feel your child’s experiences have been positive.

My child is very happy at school and loves attending. I would like to comment on how well it seems the school has handled COVID and how welcoming and supportive the school have been on return.

Many thanks for this. It has been a challenge, that is for sure! It is reassuring to know that you feel it has been successful.

Although I fully understand things are difficult with COVID, there seems to be a lack of healthy options for the current school meals.

My child says school is amazing and really good! Brilliant news! Most of the teachers say this too…..!!!

Under current circumstances I feel we are not aware of what my child is doing in school, what work they complete and are doing. Very little goes on Freeflow. No parents’ evening to look at his work didn’t help. He does extra maths which he says is easy but I am unsure what he is doing.

Parents did have the opportunity to speak with their child’s teacher. We are also providing reports at the end of this term. To find out what is being taught, please refer back to the letter sent at the start of the term and also on the school website.

As COVID-19 maybe around a while, a ‘Virtual Parents’ Evening with work shown or a social distanced one (2 metres apart, masks etc). Other virtual / streamed assemblies etc.

To operate a Zoom (or similar) Parent’s Evening would not be practical due to timings. We will also not be inviting parents / carers in for meetings at present in line with current guidance. The children have virtual assemblies. These cannot be made public for safeguarding reasons.

Due to COVID restrictions, there are no extra activities for my child. Once these restart, information will be shared. Of course, we do not know when this will be.

Sometimes my child needs to be off school for prolonged periods of time and extra work would help us.

If you feel your child may need to be off school for a week, please contact us and we can provide tasks for completion at home.

I am really happy with the educational provision provided by Belmont, equally during lockdown and when the children returned to school.

It is reassuring to hear you feel it worked well. Of course, it was a very quick ‘turnaround’ from the announcement made in March to reduce school opening to actually getting things prepared (two days!). This involved large amounts of copying, organising online programmes, distributing log-in information, setting up a new email account and so on! From a personal perspective, the full return to school, has been fantastic and we could not be more impressed with how the children have adapted to the slightly different routines.

A real positive is the regular communication that helps keep parents fully informed.

That is good to hear. Thank you.

Page 40: PARENTS’ QUESTIONNAIRE 2020 RESULTS

40

I would prefer healthier school meals. Crisps and a cake most days is not very healthy and the hot options are not the healthiest. I understand there are limitations at the moment but would prefer healthier desserts.

I am not aware of any clubs or extra curricular activities offered by the school. I know at the moment these are not possible but we have never been provided with the information.

Once these restart, information will be shared. Of course, we do not know when this will be.

Please improve social media profile (Twitter / Facebook) as useful information could be shared and student successes celebrated particularly during COVID times info shared here would have been useful.

We share pupil successes via Freeflow as and when appropriate. To do so generically on a social media platform would discriminate against those who do not wish for such coverage (we choose not to use Facebook). Information sharing happens in a weekly newsletter in terms of ‘whole school’ information and did so throughout the times where the school was operating in restricted opening (sometimes more frequently than once per week).

Extra curricular activities-last year we only found out about some of these after they had been filled. Ideally knowing about these in advance would help accessing them.

Notice for all clubs is shared with everybody at the same time; I am unsure how people receive it at different times. This certainly should not be happening with the ParentPay upload system.

Our daughter is very happy in her class and with her teacher. This is wonderful news!

I would like to see more emphasis placed on extra curricular activities. Once these restart, information will be shared. Of course, we do not know when this will be.

Freeflow: communication between parent / carers and teachers has never been more fundamental but this portal seems to be becoming a little redundant plus it isn’t easy to simply ask a teacher a question. There needs to be easier modes / systems of communication rather than email. Something that brings Freeflow and ParentPay together. Plus online lesson support eg White Rose / Purple Mash are no longer used.

Freeflow and ParentPay are entirely separate as they are intended to serve very different purposes. Freeflow was developed mainly as a system of sharing work, not primarily a generic communication tool (although on rare occasions, we have needed to use it as such). If there is an urgent question, please feel free to telephone the school at an appropriate time and we can arrange for the teacher to briefly discuss this with you. White Rose and Purple Mash were used for the remote tasks when whole groups of children were unable to attend. White Rose is the maths plan we follow in school.

Page 41: PARENTS’ QUESTIONNAIRE 2020 RESULTS

41

School meals used to be a highlight for our child. We’re happy hot options are available at last but the options aren’t too healthy or hearty.

Homework grids seem a bit repetitive and not very stretching. These are updated each term and I am sure that there will be additional challenges.

Freeflow could be used more and I would find it helpful to know if my child was struggling so we could support at home.

If it was felt that your child is struggling in class, the teacher would have no hesitation in contacting you to discuss this. Freeflow is used but sometimes generically as I am sure it is possible to appreciate the challenge of creating frequent uploads for every child in the class.

Belmont and its staff are brilliant! Thank you especially at this difficult time. Many thanks!

I feel communication regarding my child’s performance could be better. We provide written reports three times per year as well as offering three parent / teacher consultations. Further to this, we will always make contact if we feel there are issues which need addressing.

I have no idea what clubs / activities are available. Maybe an information sheet could be given at the beginning of the year.

At present there are not many extra curricular activities but when these resume fully, we will keep everybody fully informed.

My child has an excellent class teacher but it would be good to see more opportunities for ‘higher attaining’ children.

We aim to ‘push’ all children to excel but we are also looking at wider opportunities to do this…. We will keep you posted!

The ‘Parents’ Evening’ telephone conversation was really encouraging and detailed.

That is really helpful to hear. This being the case, if we are still in a similar situation next term, we will revert to the same method of communication. Thanks for the feedback.

My child says they do not have enough time to eat their lunch. All of the children now get thirty minutes for lunch with a thirty minute break also during the lunch time. This has recently been increased and really should be sufficient.

My child love learning and is engaged by the kindness and enthusiasm of her teachers.

That is really lovely to hear. Thank you.

I can’t thank the school enough for its amazing support, not only for my child but also to me as a parent.

We do feel it important to try to involve all parents / carers as well as the children and it is really reassuring to hear that and your child have found the level of support helpful. Thank you.

My child is happy at school at the moment and really likes his teacher who has so much time and respect for her pupils. Thanks you.

Thank you and in your survey, you did name the teacher and I have shared this with them.

Page 42: PARENTS’ QUESTIONNAIRE 2020 RESULTS

42

I understand that it is difficult at present, but perhaps some more after school activities for the children to get involved in.

Once these start up, we will ensure everything is communicated.

In regards to SEN, I don’t feel there is enough communication when changing teachers. All of my child’s teachers have been great once they know the situation but I feel I need to provide this at the beginning of each year.

A lot of information sharing regarding all children takes place during ‘hand over’ at the end / beginning of each academic year. With specific reference to children with SEND, Mrs Noble also shares all necessary and relevant information.

During the first ‘lockdown’, I felt very safe bringing my son into school (as a a keyworker myself). The staff have done a fantastic job this year keeping themselves and the children safe.

Thank you! The staff who were in school thoroughly enjoyed being here and for us, it continued to have some sense of, dare I say, ‘normality’ in so far as we were in school. We did try to make it as enjoyable an experience as was possible with the restrictions in place and we are really pleased to learn that you felt reassured by how the school operated.

We feel that the school has managed the impact of the pandemic extremely well. Alternative teaching material and communication methods were quickly put in place and updated frequently. This continues to be the case with timely updates to risk assessments for example. A great example of maintaining ‘business as usual’ under extenuating circumstances. Thank you.

It has been a challenge but one that the whole school community together has worked to succeed on! Thanks for the positive feedback.

My child had some struggles emotionally settling back into school but am hoping that this gets better.

It has been a challenge being back at school for many children, this year more than any other. If there are continued difficulties, please let us know. There are things we can implement to support this.

I sometimes feel my child could be pushed more. All children are taught to ‘exceed their capabilities’ and we do ensure that there are sufficient tasks to extend, although it occasionally equally important to reinforce and consolidate previous learning.

I would prefer to know more often if there are any specific areas that need attention that could improve level of understanding. Happy to work on thigs at home if we know and don’t always.

We will always contact parents / carers if there is a perceived difficulty. Further, we have Parents’ Evenings / reports each term

If we have to isolate it would be nice to see more contact from teachers eg phonecalls / Zoom interaction rather than online.

If it is an individual having to isolate for a prolonged period, it is now policy for the class teacher to make a call per week. If it is a whole class, it will be somebody other than the class teacher (as they will inevitably also be having to isolate and we do not allow telephone numbers of parents / carers to leave the school site). Zoom is not at this point seen as an appropriate medium for us to use.

Page 43: PARENTS’ QUESTIONNAIRE 2020 RESULTS

43

I would like to know what clubs and activities are available to my child. Once these start up, we will ensure everything is communicated.

We are very happy with the way the school are handling COVID-19. It can’t be easy expecting the children to follow all the rules.

We are really impressed with the way the children have adapted to all the changes!

My child has SEND and gets outstanding help and support within the school.

This is good to know. Thank you.

I would recommend this school due to the dedicated and enthusiastic staff. I was really impressed with the way home learning was organised during ‘lockdown’ and the level of communication we received.

Thanks for the comment.

My child would like an after school dance club. Tricky in the present climate but we are hoping to create some extra curricular opportunities when this is more possible.

My child would like an art club when it is not COVID! Tricky in the present climate but we are hoping to create some extra curricular opportunities when this is more possible.

My child really likes this school! Excellent news!

Never had any concerns. Staff are always friendly, welcoming and happy to help. My child enjoys school and we never have had any issues. We can’t thank the staff enough for everything provided during ‘lockdown’. All superstars during tough times.

Many thanks for this. We do try!

We would like more information regarding COVID-19 isolation. If my child’s classmate is isolating we would like to be informed so we can be extra vigilant in looking out for symptoms.

We will only inform if there is a positive case within the class / school. We cannot share information other than this.

Parents / carers receive lots of messages and information through Freeflow which is much appreciated. It is lovely to see what my child has been doing at school.

It is good to hear that you are finding Freeflow a worthwhile tool. Many thanks.

It would be good to have ‘active breaks’ during lessons. We have the ‘Daily Mile’ and plenty of break time!

A dance class would be good. At present there is not the facility for this.

More art class – drawing and painting. My child enjoys this at home. We have art as part of the curriculum which investigates a range of media.

My child’s teacher is amazing who goes above and beyond for their pupils. You did identify the teacher and I have shared your comment. Thank you.

My child says there should be more maths problem solving! Problem solving is interwoven in all areas of maths and we do have a dedicated ‘problem solving’ session each week! I’m glad they are keen!

In regards to bullying, the school has dealt with it promptly but it has not been eliminated. I don’t blame the school but I think when a bullying issue arises all parents / carers of the children involved should be involved.

Our policy is clear on bullying; we address it as soon as we are aware and we do involve the parents and carers of the children involved. If issues do not seem to be resolved, we need to be kept aware in order that we continue to address it until such a time that it is.

My child would like more scientific experiments! We have very practical science lessons which are largely driven by experimental experiences.

My child would like longer lunch times as there is not enough time to eat lunch.

We give thirty minutes for children to have lunch! This should be sufficient.

My child had issues with children being unkind but this was addressed immediately.

That is good to hear. Should it happen again, do not hesitate to contact us.

It would be nice to see a variety of after school clubs when things settle down.

It will be difficult for staff to facilitate these at present, not just because of the COVID restrictions but also because all teachers in Key Stages 1 and 2 are teaching classes after school and we are mindful of their workload and time. That is not to say there will not be any opportunities but a balance does need to be struck.

The school is excellent. The environment is friendly and welcoming. The teachers are, in my opinion, exceptional. All of the teachers have been genuinely interested in my child and my child has liked every one of them. I feel very lucky in the education my children get.

Thanks for the kind comment. We are always looking to make improvements in all that we do!

With the added pressures of COVID-19 this year I feel the school has dealt with them very well. My child had no issues returning after ‘lockdown’ and feels safe.

Thanks. We have tried to keep any kind of disruption and change to the absolute minimum and I am pleased your child feels safe.

It would be good if there were follow up contact made after concerns were dealt with to check outcomes and actions were effective.

Depending on the issue, we do make further contact to update. It is not always considered to be essential.

Both of my children have attended Belmont and have received a good education. They have been very happy at school and have been supported in their learning and social and emotional development by a fabulous team of staff.

That’s terrific to hear. Thank you.

Overall Observations

School Lunches

Some concerns have been raised about school lunches. Recently we took the steps to discuss the viability of providing hot lunch options with our caterers.

Various models were investigated and we opted for quite a substantial range of choices in the end. However, every child will receive their own ‘packaged

lunch’ and with up to five options, this is no small undertaking. They are then packed into individual class boxes for delivery to the classrooms (at the

appropriate one of the two lunchtimes to ensure hot options remain hot!). To attempt to add further options and ‘bespoke’ even more with the addition of

vegetable sticks as queried is not practical as I am sure the above information will allude to. Younger children are provided the option to accept a piece of

fruit / vegetable at breaktime in the morning and all children are encouraged to bring to school a ‘healthy snack’. If vegetables were added to ALL lunches,

based on my working knowledge of children and their food choices, there will be considerable waste. Also, the time taken to prepare this would also make

it totally unviable. As soon as we are back to the ‘canteen system’, the salad bar will return!

Extra Curricular Activities / Clubs

We are aware of the vast importance these play within a school. However, at present, children from different year groups are unable to mix; almost all

teachers are teaching groups after school; teachers are not getting much in the way of breaks at present as half of their lunchtime is spent supervising

children have their lunch in class. Many barriers are preventing the facilitating of clubs but we are keen to reinstate these, and perhaps investigate the

plausibility of offering others, when it is appropriate to do so. We do value such opportunities and will certainly keep you all informed of all developments.

Freeflow and Communication

There seems to be a real mix of feeling about Freeflow (and it is mixed within classes too). Some are happy with it whereas others feel it could be put to

better use. The main purpose of the Freeflow platform was, in the first instance, to celebrate achievements of the children. It can be difficult to find the

time to share that ‘snapshot’ but having access to the platform, I do see that it is being well utilised both by staff as well as parents / carers. It is not

intended as a medium through which to convey messages between home and school (although there may well be a time and place for this). It would seem

that communication from school has improved since previous surveys which is pleasing to see and perhaps the online sharing of letters etc via ParentPay

removes the issue of letters getting lost at the bottom of bags as we all know,, with the best will in the world, can happen!

There is one caveat in terms of Freeflow, that being a number of staff have mentioned that many uploads do not get acknowledged by a number of parents

/ carers (whilst a large number do, it must be said). We will certainly ‘do our bit’ but I am sure you will agree, communication is a two way process.
