Year 8 Boys’ Hockey is on the up!

Congratulations to the Year 8 Boys’ Hockey team who came 5th in the Surrey hockey tournament on Monday last week! The team worked very hard throughout with goals coming from Jack Swift, Ben Lullingstone and Lewis Wallage. Wins against Barrow Hills and Thomas School Battersea, meant the boys finished the tournament in a higher position than our local rivals, Dulwich College! Well done boys for an impressive performance!

London Cross Country Championships

On Tuesday 5th March, 5 students from Kingsdale were selected to represent Southwark at the London Year 7 & 8 Cross Country Championships. Well done to all participants who were Cassidy Walcott, Lola Hartley-Drewe and Margaux Glipa, all in Year 7 and Theo Gaymes & and Guy Barnett in Year 8. A special ‘well done’ to Theo and Guy who came 4th and 5th which helped team Southwark come first overall out of the 7 boroughs competing in the tournament!

Under 15s Boys’ Basketball

Last week, Kingsdale’s Under-15s Boys’ Basketball team put in a fantastic performance defeating Dulwich College 66-61 in the first leg of a double header. Despite Dulwich College racing ahead, Kingsdale rallied and showed fantastic defensive effort which led to a first half lead. In a back and forth second half played at a super pace it was neck and neck into the final two minutes with both teams trading baskets. Kingsdale’s defence shone through and allowed them to get over the line. It was a fantastic game and a superb performance which the boys shoud be very proud of. Top Scorers were Shadrach Gbenga-Ojo (Year 10), Pepe Bernardos (Year 10), Luca Howard (Year 10) and Auden Thomas Anderson (Year 9).

Kingsdale Under 16s Boys Basketball

Kingsdale Under 16s Boys’ Basketball team took on UAE Southbank, in a tightly contested game. The boys worked incredibly hard after the squad had been affected by last minute illness, leaving us with only a starting five players. After fighting hard in the first half, Kingsdale found themselves down but some excellent defence and rebounding from Omar Bagegni (Year 11) and John Aliwa (Year 11) and great offensive scores from Shadrach Gbenga-Ojo (Year 10), Edward Ifekowa (Year 11) and Jude Lambert(Year 11) saw Kingsdale into the lead and they never looked back. The final score was 38-31 to Kingsdale. Well done boys, a great effort!

Semi Finals for Year 8 Hockey Girls

On Thursday 7th March 2019, the Year 8 Girls’ Hockey team travelled to Woking Hockey Club to play in the Surrey In2 Hockey Tournament. Our first two matches, against Reigate Grammar School and Royal Russell School were a draw. The next match was a victorious 2-0 win against Nonsuch Girls School, with two great goals from Adeola Bootle (Year 8). The fourth match was against Surbiton High School and despite being 2-0 down at half time, we brought it back to finish 2-2 with a goal each from Martha Robinson (Year 8) and Adeola Bootle, assisted by Tai Prince (Year 8). Successful matches led to Kingsdale meeting JAGs in the semi-finals and narrowly missing out on the finals in a very close match. Kingsdale was a riot of colour on Thursday 7th March 2019, as staff and students embodied their favourite literary characters for World Book Day. Dracula, King Lear and Don Quixote rubbed shoulders with Katniss Everdeen and Gangsta Granny, as everyone enjoyed guessing identities and admiring costumes. Students also discussed books with teachers in their lessons, while during lunch the library was filled with students making Dada poetry and recommending their favourite books to others. All in all, it was a really great day to remember the importance of books, and to encourage everyone to expand their literary horizons. Happy reading to all!

=000 HOUSE NEWS

As part of the celebrations for International Women’s Day 2019, the House team have been looking at women who have made a difference and contributed towards society in different ways.

What is International Women’s Day?

International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8th every year. After women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8th became a national holiday there. The day was then predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until adopted in 1975 by the United Nations. The theme for International Women’s Day this year, “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change”, puts innovation by women and girls, for women and girls, at the heart of efforts to achieve gender equality. Achieving a gender-equal world requires social innovations that work for both women and men and leave no one behind. From urban planning that focuses on community safety to e-learning platforms that take classrooms to women and girls, affordable and quality childcare centres, and technology shaped by women, innovation can take the race for gender equality to its finishing line by 2030. It begins with making sure that women’s and girls' needs and experiences are integrated at the very inception of technology and innovations and ensuring that women and girls play a decisive role in emerging industries.

“Remember always that you not only have the right to be an individual, you have an obligation to be one.”

Don’t forget Red Nose Day on March 15th 2019!!

Since its launch in 1988, Red Nose Day has become something of a British institution. Comic Relief spends the money raised by Red Nose Day to help people living tough lives across the UK and Africa.

The most prominent symbol of Comic Relief is a plastic/foam ‘red nose’, which is given in various supermarkets and charity shops such as Oxfam in exchange for a donation to the charity and to make others laugh. People are encouraged to wear the noses on Red Nose Day to help raise awareness of the charity.
