Maria Montessori

Maria Montessori (1870-1952) is one of the most honored and respected educators of our time. She was born and raised in Italy and has had an impact worldwide. She was extremely educated and conquered many obstacles while studying engineering, anthropology, philosophy, psychiatry, and psychology, all in a time when society did not treat women equally. She also studied medicine and attended, with much persuasion, an all-male medical school in Italy. She became the first woman in Italian history to become a physician. At this point she dedicated herself to education and worked with children who were not “normal” members of society. Her years of dedication and determination led her to challenge established methods, which brought her tremendous success with these “non-normal” members of society. She then “became convinced that similar methods applied to normal children would develop or set free their personality in a marvelous and surprising way.” (Maria Montessori) The results were remarkable. This leads to the continued success of Montessori schools in more than one hundred countries around the world. Her methods and beliefs have changed the way we educate children. The children are brought to a whole new level, educationally, socially, emotionally and spiritually. She became the needed voice for children.

Montessori Method

The Montessori method is based on the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori. She revolutionized early childhood education by advocating that children be allowed the freedom to explore and develop their own creative potential through self-teaching educational materials. These materials that Maria Montessori designed are still used in Montessori classrooms today. Montessori gave much consideration to the sensitive periods of development that each child passes through. The Montessori curriculum is designed around these sensitive periods, enhancing exposure to all areas of education at specific times. Her goal was to allow the child to build positive self-esteem and a high level of confidence. She supported the development of the child to become independent and self-directed learners. She provided children the opportunity to learn how to read.

School Structure

The Infant House is for children ages 0-18 months. Teachers develop close relationships with each infant over the course of the year and strive to provide care that closely matches the care the child receives at home. Each child's schedule is based on their personal eating and sleeping patterns. The environment is planned to be a loving, safe environment that is also comfortable and interesting, but not overwhelming. It is a safe place for learning crawlers and walkers and encourages exploration in their development.

The Toddler House is for children ages 18 months to 3 years. The environment emphasizes building relationships between teachers and toddlers and their families. Social interactions in the Toddler House is fostered and nurtured. Focusing on large motor and fine motor skills, singing songs, reading stories, outdoor activities and core time are all apart of their daily schedule. Teachers respond to children's interests and initiative in their planning of developmentally appropriate activities.

The Children House is designed for children ages 3-6. Learning is promoted through self-direction and independence. There is a large focus on grace and courtesy, showing respect for themselves, others and their environment. Children learn at their own pace while supporting age appropriate learning goals. Children within this age range are active learners and need to move about their environment and engage with a variety of materials. Choice and social involvement are important aspects to their learning in the Montessori environment. Montessori Academy of the Upper Keys offers the children Art, Music, Spanish and cooking on a weekly basis. Our Elementary is for children in Kindergarten- Second Grade. Maria Montessori summed up the 6-9 classroom thusly: "The elementary child has reached a new level of development. Before he was interested in things: working with his hands, learning their names. Now he is interested mainly in the how and why...the problem of cause and effect." It is now the job of the elementary teacher to provide the child with the materials and information to discover the interconnectedness of the universe. An elementary Montessori classroom is a warm community: a multi-age, stimulating environment with highly trained teachers and materials that invite exploration and research. Children learn to face challenges with confidence, and begin to find their own place in the world around them. Curriculum There are five areas of study within a Montessori classroom. 1. Practical Life – Children learn daily life activities, which prepare them for many other skills like reading and writing. They develop fine motor skills, hand/eye coordination, concentration, and so much more. There are three areas within Practical Life; Care of Self; Care of Environment; and Grace and Courtesy.

Page 6: Parent Handbook 2017-2018€¦ · Montessori Method The Montessori method is based on the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori. She revolutionized early childhood education by advocating

6

2. Sensorial – Children refine and organize their sensory perceptions through the use of Montessori-designed materials. Each sense has specific lessons that allow the child to isolate that specific sense and develop it fully. 3. Language – Children are exposed to various phonetic components that constitute the English language. They progress using concrete materials which aid them in developing their reading and writing skills. 4. Mathematics – The Montessori math materials make learning new concepts a joy for children. The children physically manipulate materials and therefore internally comprehend concepts. Montessori children usually thrive with this method and advance far in math. 5. Culture and Science – In this area the children learn about the world around them. Botany, Zoology, History, Physical and Cultural Geography and Science make up the Cultural area. The children really learn how they fit into the world around them. Language Spanish instruction will be given to all the children in the Children’s House on a weekly basis. They will receive instruction in a small group setting each week for 30-minute session. Art The children receive weekly art instruction in small groups, based on artistic interest and ability. They will study different artists, genres, and mediums. There is an art room, which allows children exposure to many different art projects. We follow the Montessori Art Curriculum. Music and Movement Music and Movement are taught daily in a Montessori classroom. The children will be exposed to instruments and music from around the world. They will learn different dances and movements, following the Montessori curriculum. The children also have a concert series music class monthly, taught by a certified music teacher. Testing Children in Kindergarten and above participate in State testing. They take the Stanford Achievement Test Series Tenth Edition. The testing takes place in May.

Field Trips

The Children’s House will attend 6 field trips throughout the year. They are educational and relevant to topics of study being discussed in the classroom. There are occasional recreational field trip as well, focusing on athletics. The Toddler House will attend 4 field trips throughout the year. All parents are notified in writing at least a week before the field trip and written permission must be given. In order for your child to participate in the field trips, a Field Trip Permission Form must be completed, including Consent for Medical Treatment in case of an emergency. Separation All children experience a form of separation in one form or another – it is natural. It is a step towards independence and it can be challenging for parents and children. It is vitally important that parents and teachers work together, showing children that they can trust and believe in one another. This offers a foundation of support that the children will benefit from. Independence is the ultimate goal for the child, but until this is achieved, please feel free to stay in the classroom a while and help with the transition. It should not take long before your child is settled and adjusted to their new environment. Observation Each classroom environment has an area for visitors to observe from. Parents are always welcome in the classroom as Montessori Academy of the Upper Keys has an open-door policy. We encourage parent involvement. Discipline Montessori classrooms are designed to ensure that the child faces more success and less failure than success. When a child experiences success, satisfaction and security, it brings about a well-disciplined child. Situations do arise when discipline is necessary. To discipline is to teach the child acceptable ways to handle different situations. Even a young child can understand the cause and effect of their actions. Discipline should not be punishment. The staff at Montessori Academy of the Upper Keys recognizes the beauty and worth of every child and we will help them develop a positive self-image and a respect for themselves, others and their environment. We believe that children who are treated with fairness and respect will in turn treat others in the same way. The goal of discipline is to help a child change their behavior from negative to positive. Disciplinary actions will be documented through incident reports that will be sent home to the parents and a copy will be kept in the student’s file. If a child does not show signs of improvement and does not respond to the discipline techniques used at school, then the child’s parents will be called in for a conference. Together the parents

10

and staff will devise a consistent discipline plan to be used at home and at school. One month later all parties will meet again to review the child’s progress. It will then be evaluated if the school is an appropriate placement for the child. The philosophy of the school is based on love and respect. We believe that the adults must be models of the behavior they wish to elicit from the children and others, and must show respect for the child and others at all times. Therefore, any abuse of the child – verbal, physiological or physical – is prohibited. It is the policy of our staff never to use or threaten to use any physical punishment. Verbal abuse is never permitted. Teachers may not use corporal, verbal or physiological punishment. They may not deny children basic needs such as food, nourishment or sleep as a behavior modification. Attendance Montessori Academy of the Upper Keys offers a full-day program for all children. The school hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It is recommended that children attend all possible days of school to achieve the full benefits. Tuition is expected even if the child is absent, as the child reserves a space in our program. Please remember to sign your child in and out every day, as law requires it. Take note that you need to sign your full name and exact time on your child’s sign-in/ out sheet. Communication Parent conferences are scheduled twice a year, one in each semester. Every child receives a mid-year progress report and an end-of-the-year report card. Daily communication is encouraged between teacher and parent. Feel free to call or e-mail your child’s teacher at any time.

Important information regarding school activities is communicated through monthly newsletters and parent bulletin boards. Parent Education Nights are offered throughout the year to discuss various topics, all about children. See calendar of dates for Parent Education nights. Lunch Program/Snacks

Snacks are made available to all the children twice a day. We offer fruits, vegetables, crackers, and other healthy options. Sometimes children bring in a snack to share with their classmates. We encourage parents to make healthy food choices for their children. Please avoid foods such as “Lunchables” and other processed foods. No juice please.

Montessori says that the perfect opportunity for success toilet training is between 11-18 months of age. Parent participation and support is a must in the process. Any clothes that become soiled will be sent home in a bag to be cleaned. Please speak with your child’s teacher for more details.

Perspective on Biting

Biting is a very common behavior among children birth to three years of age. Biting is a form of communication and is almost always a response to the child’s needs not being met or coping with a challenge or stressor. At Montessori Academy of the Upper Keys we believe by understanding the developmental stages of the children in our care and their individual needs, we can proactively prevent many biting behaviors by the environment, which we create for children. We have a complete Perspective on Biting information packet for anyone that is interested.

Toilet Learning:

Do you have any special diapering or toileting instructions?

________________________________________________________________________

Toilet learning plan of action:________________________________________________

Please indicate which your child uses (disposable diapers, cloth diapers, training pants, potty

chair or toilet): ________________________________________________________

** We will notify the parents when their child’s diapers are running low. Please provide an

adequate number of diapers for your child.

** If cloth diapers are used the parent must provide an air- tight container that will prevent the

escape of fluids and odors. The container must be portable and the parents will remove it at the

end of each day. Please return it empty the next day.

**Toilet Learning with correct hand washing and hygiene procedures are incorporated into the

toilet learning process for the child. Staff will work in conjunction with parents.

** All children in the process of toilet learning may be diapered if circumstances warrant their

use.

“One test of the correctness of educational procedure is the happiness of the child.”
